Get ready Gambels hunters!!!!!
Coues79 replied to stanley's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Lets hope that the forecast remains in tact all through next week and the meteorologists have this one pegged down. Here's the forecast as of this morning for the valley and up along the rim. "SEVERAL INCHES OF RAIN ARE POSSIBLE THIS COMING WEEK... ESPECIALLY IN THE HIGHER TERRAIN NORTH AND EAST OF PHOENIX WHERE 5 TO NEAR 10 INCHES OF RAIN ARE QUITE POSSIBLE. LOCALIZED FLOODING OF NORMALLY DRY WASHES... STREAMS... AND LOW LYING AREAS COULD OCCUR IF STORMS CONTINUE MOVING OVER THE SAME AREA FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD OF TIME. IN ANY CASE... A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE FLOW OF WATER IS EXPECTED IN NORMALLY DRY WASHES AND STREAMS. IF YOU ENCOUNTER FLOODING OF WATER OVER THE ROAD OR DEBRIS SUCH AS ROCKS OR MUD... TURN AROUND AND FIND ANOTHER WAY TO YOUR DESTINATION." "THE FIRST STORM WILL ARRIVE BY MONDAY AFTERNOON CONTINUING INTO TUESDAY MORNING WITH WIDESPREAD RAIN AND SNOW. SNOW LEVELS WILL START OUT AROUND 7000 FEET... DECREASING TO 5500 FEET BY TUESDAY MORNING. THE FOLLOWING ARE PRELIMINARY SNOWFALL ESTIMATES FROM MONDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING: 2 TO 6 INCHES ... ... ... . 6000 TO 7000 FEET 6 TO 10 INCHES ... ... ... 7000 FEET AND ABOVE A SECOND COLDER STORM WILL ARRIVE TUESDAY NIGHT AND CONTINUE INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING WITH SNOW LEVELS FORECAST TO RANGE FROM 5000 TO 6000 FEET. THE FOLLOWING ARE PRELIMINARY ADDITIONAL SNOWFALL ESTIMATES FROM TUESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING: 4 TO 10 INCHES ... ... ... 5500 TO 6500 FEET 8 TO 12 INCHES ... ... ... 6500 FEET AND ABOVE A THIRD AND EVEN STRONGER STORM WILL ARRIVE ON THURSDAY... LASTING THROUGH FRIDAY. THIS STORM MAY PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF RAIN AND SNOW... ALONG WITH VERY STRONG WINDS. A SIGNIFICANT FLOODING THREAT IS POSSIBLE FOR LOCAL AREA RIVERS AND STREAMS ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. VERY HEAVY SNOWFALL IN THE HIGHER ELEVATION AREAS MAY ALSO OCCUR. THIS STORM IS STILL ALMOST A WEEK AWAY... AND PATTERNS MAY CHANGE. STAY TUNED TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE... FOR UPDATES CONCERNING THIS STORM." -
Had a chance to visit the home and talk with Outdoor Writer a couple months back. Dang sure was impressive to see the game he has taken. He was full of great stories; wish I would of had more time to sit and chat. He'd be great to spend some campfire time with too.

Application Anxiety
Coues79 replied to Non-Typical Solutions's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I always end up sealing the envelopes and then ripping them back open just to make sure everything is ok. Then I keep having my wife check to make sure the checks clear, then I'm good! I think one benefit of the online app process being suspended is that there are probably fewer anti's that put in just to eat up some tags. -
I was around a campfire when I heard that back in the day, Lark could pi$$ over a VW bug. That was enough to make me know that I'm not sure if I would wanna spend time with Lark around the campfire

quartering too shots, ethical or not
Coues79 replied to azdesert rat's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Depending on your setup on your bow, what kind of broadheads you're shooting etc. I would have shot in a heartbeat. At 15 yards, I would imagine one would get plenty of penetration on a coues whitetail. On an elk, I may have thought twice about it. Pretty good question to ask. You will have some who think you should have shot, others who say you did a good job on holding out. Let it be, and go get another opportunity on him -
You've got a good bit of mid-morning action there. Looks like a good buck too.
-
Great looking buck! It sure does look like he's been in the field for a while. Has that old deer look to him. His neck looks like its gonna rip his own hide too! Wow its swollen. He also looks like he'll weigh a good bit. Any idea on his weight?

On cameraland's website, they are $1749. If they're in perfect condition, this doesn't seem like too bad of a deal IMO.

Here's a drop found a few years ago in a southern unit. He sure is a monster. What do you think he'd go?
-
I have one and like it well. Its not going to be KOWA quality but its a pretty good scope for the money. I like it. I talked with Doug at cameraland about the difference between the ED and regular scope. He said unless you're doing some major digiscoping, there isn't a difference between the two. Call him and ask him about the scope. He'll be honest with you.

Hey buddy, it was 100% my decision to pass on that 100" 2x2. I've got numerous other 100 inch bucks on the wall, one more 100 inch buck isn't what I was after, so as for quality, yes I wanted bigger. Doesn't mean you need to call the "wambulence", its called someones personal goal. I wanted a bigger buck, and to me, that is what was going to make a successful harvest worth it. Its my own personal goal. If you'd of shot him, great for you! I know I have waited 13 years to draw a December hunt, and with this finally being the year, I was hoping to fulfill the tag with a toad. To have a chance to hunt during the rut and WAY WAY cooler weather, was awesome. I loved it. I don't think the thread was meant as a "crying" thread, but its obvious that with numerous people seeing the lack of big deer, that the bigger bucks are #1; becoming less in number, or, #2, becoming smarter about showing themselves.
-
I had a very similar experience on my December hunt. I ended up either glassing or jumping over 50 different bucks, over 10 days of hard hunting. Lots of hours spent behind the glasses. The biggest buck I glassed or saw was a real big 2x2. He was one of the biggest main framed bucks I have ever seen, but wasn't what I was looking for. He had to be close to or just over 100 just as a 2 point; really impressive deer. I guess I just wasn't in the right places cause theres been a few toads, monsters or hawgs (whatever you wanna call them) taken over this past December in my unit. Sure wish I could've found one. Maybe this next hunting season the draw will be good to me again.

What do you wear on your feet for a stalk?
Coues79 replied to couesarcher's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
The felt pads work awesome. They do have velcro on them so you have to make sure to put them on well before you get into stalking distance. That is what I primarily use, however I do have the bearsfeet too. Don't care for them too much. The silencer stuff on the bottom doesnt seem sturdy enough to handle very many stalks. It gets pressed down too easily and loses its effectiveness IMO. I am getting ready to try some moccassins out. I just got a pair for Christmas with a soft rubber sole. I like them so much I'm gonna have to get another pair cause I am just wearing these around the house too much. They make some with just a leather bottom; some are doubled up on the leather. I think these would be great for stalking and will surely pack away easily enough. -
If I "had" to go through jerks saying that kind of stuff, I'd gladly take it. Your buck has "coues" written all over it, no matter what anyone says. The idiots that think that have no idea what it feels like to hold that rack in their hands......... You do!! Way to go!

Wish those little grey ghosts would stick out like their cousins do.

Great looking buck. Congrats!

How about a rough score? Is he big in tine length? Mass? Wide? Everything? -
Way to put the smack down on them lions. Very cool.

Don't pay him any attention. That's what the guy fuels on. Its evident, "I love it when people read my posts". I feel really bad for the guy making these kinds of comments, imagine what's coming to him when he gets judged in the end. WoW. I don't understand how you could WANT to make comments like that. Its really sad. I hope and pray his children and wife never have to hear or read such hurtful comments about someone they love so dearly. Lark, you made me laugh. Nice.

IMO, once a sounder has been called in using a call, they wise up to it for a while. I've had pigs come barreling in before, some take off like pumba with a lion on its tail. If you can get onto a sounder that hasn't been called, I think your chances of having them come in are good, with a javelina call or even a rabbit distress call as well. Called them in with both. Just gotta find the right pigs. Stalking in on them can be a huge rush too. When they're going to town rootin' around, a guy can get in EXTREMELY close. That's as much of a rush as blowin' a call IMO. Good Luck

That is a stain on the antlers. Was picked up white antlered. I have dreams of taking one this big someday. It's hard to grasp how big he is until you see it in person and hold it. He looks big in some of the pictures, but in real life.............
