Disappointing Load Results 7mm-08
KYLES96 replied to rossislider's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I purchased a Thompson Center "Venture" 7mm08 last year for my 13 year old son. I was going with the 243 but thought about Elk and heard with hand loads I could make a round with not much more recoil in the 7mm08. I'm really glad I went with the 08, there are so many more loading options for this cartridge. The TC Rifle is guaranteed 1"MOA or send it back. I wanted a Remington Youth but decided to try TC. Not sure if it's the rifle or I just got lucky with my first try on the hand loads. This is what I came up with,,,Winchester Case, 44.4grs of IMR 4064, 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, Winchester Standard Rifle Primer, bullet seated at max length 2.800", 2900fps. This load was shooting real nice groups at 100yrds off a bench and the rifle was on a Caldwell Lead Sled. I achieved even better groups (most touching ) with the same Win Case, 44grs of 4064, 140gr Nosler Silvertips same primer and seat, 2800fps. My son said he can feel the difference in the recoil with the 140s over the 120s and I believe I can too. Planning to shoot the 120s this year and move up to the 140s next year. I put a 6.5X18X40mm Nikon Buckmasters with both elevation and windage turret scope on this rifle. I agree with a couple other posts, I have an 8lb keg of 4350 that I shoot in my 7mag. This powder is the only one I'll use in the 7 Mag. I really wanted this powder to work but achieved better groups with the 4064, could be the rifle? Good Luck...... -
I'm shooting a Winchester Model 70 Stainless Classic with a BOSS, 7mm Rem Mag, 6.5x20 Leupold VX3 with the elevation turret. Reloads are Winchester Case, 63 grs. of IMR 4350 ( loads are from an old Sierra Book) 150 gr. Nosler Silvertips, Rem 9 1/2 Magnum Primer. Just over 3100fps at the muzzle. Just got back from Three Points Range today, no issues with head shots on the Rams (500meters or 546 yards) It's all about the scope for me and not to mention the Caldwell Lead Sled. I also have turrets on my sons 7mm08 and can also make the same shots with it. If you're not familiar with Turrets, you set them up for a certain range, it eliminates having to hold high and praying your Hail Mary shots connect. I set mine up with "0" being 100 yards, turn the dial to 1.5 and that's my 200yard all the way up to 600 yards. I couldn't do it without the scope and there's not as many head shots with just a bi-pod over the Lead Sled. I also consider I'm at the range on a cement bench, 0 wind and no Buck Fever, I have shot one Coues at just over 600 yards but that's not what I prefer. I shoot Partitions for Elk. Good Luck

Sweet ride, my first 4x4 was a 72 Scout II with a 304V8 and 4 speed manual, looked just like this one. That truck would go anywhere you pointed it.

KYLES96 replied to deserthntr's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Scored Kyle a new Badlands Superday Max 1 and some Vortex 12x40 Diamondbacks. I think Border Patrol calls Illegal Immigrants UDA's(Undocumented Aliens) I think it stands for Unregistered Democratic Assn. -

Looking for help with a GREAT problem
KYLES96 replied to mtn-memories's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
That is a problem, is it contagious? Good luck, how many times have you seen a 100+ buck on a pig hunt or a monster bull on a deer hunt. I bet you'll see a really nice Bear or wall hanger Turkey. -
Things your huntin buddies do that drive you nuts : )

That's funny about the fire, my old man told me "Would you rather smell like smoke which I'm sure the deer in this unit have smelled for years due to wild fires or smell like you do"? What's worse? -

My son and I always notice one of our pals inability to walk without kicking rocks. I just want to say "Really, we are hunting animals that see, hear, smell and run like the wind, pick your feet up Bro". Do you think it would hurt his feeling if we bought him a set of Bears Feet? ha -
I've used these wipes for some time now without any issues. The only thing that concerns me is the wording or that lack of on the box. The box shows eyeglasses, computers, cameras and phones, it does mention "other optics" and states "safe for use on lenses with anti-reflective coatings". I have an issue with binoculars and keep finding new pairs in the closet. Started with Steiner moved to Doctors bought some Zeiss and ended up with Leica Duovids. Not to mention the Vortex I bought my son. I won't touch the lens anymore than absolutely necessary. I try not to clean them in the field and if possible, I clean after the hunt. There has been times during the hunt when I had to clean my lenses and these wipes work great after I blew the glass and dabbed the lens. All my binos are water proof, I know it sounds bizarre but my Leica and Ziess say to submerse into water which I do each year once the hunt is over. I'll fill the kitchen sink up halfway and move them around slowly, I also have a very soft brush that allows me to get any dirt/dust out of crevices. I had to call Leica before I did this the first time, just sounded wrong. They assured me it would be fine, all my binos still look brand new. "YOU WILL RUIN YOUR BINOS IF THEY"RE NOT WATERPROOF" Good luck Kyle's Dad.
