Judging a big muley is tough, and bigger ones are tougher! First thing I look at is his frame. I like a buck to be at least as wide as his ears, you can lose or gain +-5"s on inside width alone. Next I look at his beam and forks. I want to see his main beam to be around the tip of his nose. With the forks I want the g4 to be at least half way up the back fork and the back fork to be 6"s deep. Mass is hard to tell sometimes but heavy bucks just look it. Brow tines also will make or break a score. The best way to learn is to measure heads n sheds. You'll get yourself in the ballpark pretty fast! The buck above looks to be around the mid 160's, great looking frame but time length is just not there. Good luck and don't get hung up on scores! The biggest buck I've ever had a chance at is still on the kiabab alive and well because I got hung up on "judging" him. I still lose sleep 2 years later! Lol

Deer Draw: What was everyone's first and second choice?

Just take the key, no matter what you do if they want it they'll take it! But the longer they have to try the safer you are! Pull a fuse to your ignition system would be the easiest I think.

Since this is taking forever to find out what we drew in AZ, i decided to post some pics of a buck i was hunting a few years back. Sadly this buck and one other that we found still alive with a bullet through the spine were poached on private property with a rifle just a few days before the Jan bow hunt in SE NM. And just a day or so after i got these great shots of this beautiful buck! Just found the pics again. Enjoy!

So what's the best way to judge a "good" buck? I've hunted muley's all my life and am pretty confident in knowing a good buck when I see one. But man these little deer are a lot different! And what's considered a great buck? Muley's I call them great at about 180+

Thanks Tyler! I put in for the 17a/17b dec muley first choice and 6b/8 dec coues second, no 3rd or later choice and got a hit! I'm really hoping for my first coues deer and a new addiction! Lol Tj that's always my back up plan! Haha but don't want to waste a great opportunity here!

Amanda I've been here for about 4 yrs now. As soon as i figure this site out i will I know i have a good Muzzy tag here in sept and now a dec tag so this year i'll have some good pics im sure! Tyler i love working up this way, its just a cool change of scenery!

Not sure what tags are but, hi guys and gals! Just stumbled across this site while doing a little research on coues deer. I might have just drawn my first coues hunt in AZ, charges but not sure what dec tag I got yet! So I might be full of questions here soon. Well I'm going to be here for awhile either way lol. Great site!

Yes we are. Your not joking about the money around here! The down side is prices for everything are way to high. People wanting 20-30% over appraisal for a house and getting it just kills me! Lol Some people really can make too much money I think! But yeah the economy is pretty stable here right now. Noes where's Eloy at? Down around Tucson?

Oh I work for Bos solutions running closed loop systems.

I live in Hobbs now, moved here to be with my kids and most me and my ex's family all live here. It's alright but I miss AZ. Yeah there are some huge deer down here in the sand hills. Those salt flats hold some bombers still! Just hard to find them like anywhere. We have access to a big ranch down here that's produced some 190 to 200" bucks. But poaching is a real serious problem for these deer down here unfortunately. You make it down this way much?

I do know that truck, or did lol I love those older body style fords and that was one of the nicer ones around town.

Tyler they actually get a lot of business from my family! Great shop and real good people there. I'm not sure if I have ever really met them. I actually work in PA in the oilfield, a lot of traveling but about half the year off so it works out great for me! Who's your brother over here?

Thanks everyone! I'm a member of a few other sites and this is by far one of the best IMO. I live in Hobbs, nm now but lived in Kingman/Flagstaff for 32 years. So I still tell everyone I'm from AZ lol
