Well I'll find out today if I'm in good enough shape! I've never run any type of race that's this long or challenging so it will be a real test of endurance for me. Mthorsrud, Take a look at the Spartan Race. It's coming up in February. It's very similar. I'll probably do that one too.

Anyone in a white truck (Dodge I think) running hounds on the west side of unit 21 yesterday (January 2) morning? If so PM me please. I've been sitting in my blind with my girlfriend trying to get her on her first pig in the same area. You were about 50 yards from us but I don't know if you knew we were there. Sounded like 2 of the 3 dogs you had were named Hap and Chode, but I already spoke with Randy and it wasn't him. The two names were pretty similar though.

That's awesome Clay! Congrats to you both.

Have you ever missed a shot because of a steep angle?
BML replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Contests and Giveaways!
Not really a story about a miss but I good story depicting why I should have had a rangefinder with angle compensation with me. I had a 120 inch buck at 376 yards this past October. He was standing feeding below the cliff we were glassing on top of. I am very comfortable at that range, but the angle was so steep I just couldn't make the decision to start flinging lead his way. I really had no idea where to aim and I didn't want to push a deer of this caliber out of the area forever because I started guessing where to hold. I also didn't want to risk making a marginal hit and never recovering him. So I decided to bail off the cliff and get closer. We all know how well that works...... -
I'm with you on this one Coach. I really enjoy chasing pigs with my bow. I've observed just about everything you have mentioned about them as well. I'm trying something different with them this year. I found a spot with a huge herd that very rarely leaves the comfort of a very thick wash bottom. I'm going to try sitting in a ground blind along a well used trail and try to ambush them. Not really as exciting as a spot and stalk hunt, but it will still be a load of fun trying to kill one right in their comfort zone.

That's awesome!!! Ground blind or tree stand? Congrats to your buddy.

With all the posts we always read about so and so screwing up "my hunt" and people being arse holes and what not I figured I would throw out a post for the good guys. I got to a new spot I'd never hunted before early today and while glassing a few hundred yards from my truck I quickly noticed I wasn't alone. Truck after truck rolled in as the sun came up. I quickly realized that if any bucks were spotted, I may not be the only one hunting them. Well an hour or so, and 25 deer later, I was planning my stalk on a couple small bucks. I had covered a bout a mile when I stopped in the shade of a small tree to assess the situation. The bucks were still about 150 yards away so I needed to make the plan for my final approach. There was one doe still up feeding so I decided to back out around the back side of the tree I was next to. When I did, I noticed a hunter with his son ( I assume) about 100 yards behind me. They had also spotted the bucks and were attempting a stalk as well. They saw me and the fact that I was already in position to make a move and they stayed put. 2 hours or so later I was 25 yards away from these bucks when a couple cows ruined my day. Long story short a big thank you goes out to to that guy who allowed me to continue on my stalk. He could have very easily rushed in to beat me to it. He set an awesome example for the young hunter he was with. Good luck to everyone still out there hunting!!

Ironically, within 48 hours someone stole my trail camera from a nearby river bottom where I was hunting that day. I checked it before I left on Saturday and went back on Monday to reposition it and it was gone. Had it chained up and everything so they had to break it off the lock, since the chain and lock were still around the tree. There was another camera in that river bottom a few hundred yards from mine that I saw when I was looking for a spot to put mine. It wasn't locked or anything. I left it alone and found my own spot. After finding mine missing, I hiked over and that one was gone too. I am guessing since the batteries of that one were laying on the ground, it wasn't stolen and the owner is the culprit. Oh well. I still stand by what I originally posted here about the good hunter etiquette from that guy and his son. Karma will get whoever took my camera. Happy hunting!

Blue Hammer as well.

Anyone going to chase muleys around this weekend? If so, good luck!

Shoot me a PM or text and let me know. My girlfriend has a tag this year. It's her first big game hunt. She's shooting really well. I have one spot picked out with a big herd that we are going to try to set a blind on, but who knows if it will work. I could always use a back up spot. If you need any help up there this weekend, let me know. I will south of where you'll be. Trying something a little different this time.

Hey Daniel, Let me know if you see any pigs. Pig numbers seem to be down in 21 this year.

My Danners have finally given up on me so I'm in the market for a new boot. I've heard some great things from hikers about these boots. Just curious if anyone has tested them in hunting scenarios. Things like comfort and ankle support are a must for me. http://www.rei.com/product/667406/asolo-fsn-95-gtx-hiking-boots-mens,-light-brown/sand?preferredSku=6674060261?cm_mmc&mr:trackingCode=3683071B-81F9-DE11-BAE3-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA

It's never to early to at least get him out in the field experiencing the outdoors. I took my daughter on her first camping trip when she was just a few months old. She's been camping with me dozens of times since then and she loves it. Last year, at age 4, I took her on her first actual hunting trip. I was prepared to not hunt much and that's just the sacrifice we have to make as parents in order to get our kids involved. She and I did a little glassing here and there, usually until she got bored. That doesn't take long for a 4 year old! She actually got to witness my brother shoot his deer and she joined us on the recovery and field dressing as well. Just remember to have A TON of patience. You want to do everything in your power to make it a fun and enjoyable experience right from the start. Otherwise, they won't like it and won't want to go again with you.

Unfortunately, Kenetreks are not in my budget as I have heard lots of good reviews of their boots. I think I'm going to try to stretch my Danners through the next couple months and then look into the Meindl and FSN boots. Thanks again for all the tips. I appreciate it.

Thanks for the tips so far! I appreciate it.

I'm looking for a new bow for a brand new hunter. Her draw length is 26.5". I was originally thinking of buying new but figured I'd try to find a good used one first. She can pull 40lbs already. Looking for one that's in the 50lb max range. I'm willing to buy a bow that is currently the wrong draw length as long as the price is right and its a bow that can have the length shortened by buying new cams. Let me know what you have. Need to buy soon so she can be ready by January. Thanks!

Thanks for the tips. I've been looking at that one and the PSE Chaos One if I decide to buy new. Still going to try to find a used bow first. Don't want to drop $350 if I don't have to. Thanks again!
-
Hey Ryan, What's the minimum draw weight? Also do you know if the draw length can be shortened? I know some bows can but I can't find any info on this bow. Thanks.
-
Do you know if it's the Ram Plus or the Ram and a Half? Also do you know if the draw length is adjustable down to 26.5?

Anyone here Kayak? I've always wanted to get into it and think I'm finally going to bite the bullet and start looking for one. I can't afford a good new one, so I'm looking used. Any tips on what to look for and/or stay away from? Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

Thanks Doug! I just missed out on a good deal, but I'm sure I'll find another one eventually. Thanks again for all the tips.
