  1. Hi guys, it’s been a while since I have been hunting! Last deer I killed was with my wife In 2016! Long story short, I got drawn for an October hunt with a good friend. He is fairly new to coues deer and needed some help. We drew a unit I have ever stepped foot in, he killed a small spike a year before. I’d like to get him on a decent buck (65-80” deer) and I’d like to hold out for a 90”+. I am walking into this unit 100% blind. I have decent experience coues hunting but would like more “seasoned” hunters input. I have been out a couple times scouting without any real good deer spotted. I spend most of my time on google earth e-scouting. This leads me to my question, what do you all look for as an ideal spot to start? Deep canyons, ocotillo, etc? Wha would you describe as a “feeding” spot versus a “bedding” area? I can glass deer all day but I struggle with the initial start (where to go, what terrain to look for).

    Scouting a new area

I was with my buddy last year just behind pena Blanca lake and he shot a small 3x. There was defiantly a lot of traffic. I have been scouting the north side of the area, closer to Arivaca lake: i want to clarify my question was not to ask for area to hunt. I spend religious amount of time on google earth and have picked up some good game water and decent looking bowls/canyons to glass with little to be found. What terrain do you all look for when starting to scout a new area? South slopes? North slopes? Deep canyons or low rollers?

    First timer hunting in 36B

Yes, lots of pigs in this unit. The refuge gets hammered heavy with hunters and guides so don’t expect to ever be alone. I have never seen illegals in that unit, but they are there. Get on a high hill/roller and glass the washes and run-offs. I see them every time I am out there hunting mule deer.

    Bowhunting the rut

I only spot and stalk. I can sit in a blind. OneShot nailed it, hunt the does. You see a heard of doe, a buck is somewhere near. Seems that if the deer are rutting, they bed later and usually stay down longer. This can give you extra time to put in a stock. Just my .02

    Any help or advice appreciated!

Not super familiar with either units, so can help there. Just an idea is renting a travel trailer? some customers of mine in tucson rent 19-23' travel trailers for Around $75 a night. u could park that thing right next to where your hunting. Just an idea..

    The Humbling Buck

It was a great experience for us all Matt. You put in the effort and took a good buck. That shot was unbelievable to say the least! It was a pleasure being part of it. -Adam
  9. Hi guys. I'm new to the forum but what better place to get hunters opinion than here! Anyways, I got my girlfriend a leftover tag in unit 30A. We didn't get to do much scouting do to work. Long story short, we hiked our butts off and didn't see one buck. We started off happy valley road on the SE side of the dos cabazes mountians. We saw 3 doe and a fawn. After hiking 8 miles into the dos cabazes with not one deer found, we headed out. Went back the next day. Same outcome. After talking with a few ranchers about the dos cabazes, we decided to ditch them and head down to the paragose mountians. We took the 186 down to Rucker rd. Glassed all morning, no deer. Hiked all the way to the top of a peak (not sure what one at this moment) saw track, scat, etc but no deer. Spent all day there, not one deer. Went back in the next day at a different location in the pedrogosa's. no deer. We JUST got home. My girlfriend is bummed and so am I. There is almost zero access to the dos cabazes. A lot of private land with many unhappy ranchers. The pedragose mountains have more access, but you have to hike miles to get where u need to be. 90% of the swisshelm mountians is on private land. We tried getting permission from smiths to hunt on the swisshelm a, but no answer. What I'm getting at is I want to get my girl on deer. I know there will be more leftover tags next year for this unit. Any help would be appreciated. Not looking for money holes, just anywhere that hold whitetail in that unit. Thanks guys!

    Unit 30A sucks!

I have been reading all about this unit. We hiked a total of 30.7 miles in 3 days without seeing one WT deer!! I spent most of my time glassing and still nada. Anyone have any pointers? Is the Dos Cabezas better than the paragosa? SE side or north side? Im lost in this unit...

    Unit 30A sucks!

We are going to be putting in for a good unit. I would still like to be able to purchase the leftover tag.

    PSE Bow Madness XL

I just sold my 2012 PSE bowmadness. GREAT bow, crappy customer service/company. I love the grip, speed (305 fps with 380 grain arrow), and VERY QUITE! I would still own it if I didn't have bad experiences with the company. Shoot one and see how u like it
