I am looking for some help on how to stain my antlers. I killed the buck August archery on the AZ strip on a 100 degree day a few years ago. We obviously lost the velvet :/ My potential problem is, as you can see in the pictures, there are a bunch of darker blochy blood stain areas or something in the antler that I'm pretty sure would make the stain job look funny. Does anyone have any experience with this issue? Would you treat it like painting and do a white primer or something first, and then stain the antlers to get it all more uniform? What stains do you like best? Thanks

Velvet is basically skin/flesh. If you don't preserve it ASAP, especially when it is hot, it will "slip" or start to become detached from the antlers and start to rot basically. They hold blood. My brother and I were both just out of college and dirt poor and bootstrapped our hunt together out of his Jeep Cherokee and anyone who has hunted those hunts can fill in the blanks from there lol. Thanks for the replies, I really wish I would have been able to have the natural velvet, but I don't like how the artificial velvet looks. I will get in touch with you Critter, thanks, that sounds like the way to go. Here in Kingman we have mostly very light colored dirt, so I'll have to hunt down some richer ground somewhere.

When this question is asked, the answers are placed in several categories for me, I'm mainly an archery hunter though, fyi. A. The biggest bucks in the world come from_____(hard to draw, no over the counter hunts, far away, usually considered 13a and 13b) B. The highest deer populations and good bucks with the chance of seeing a whopper are found in _____(Pretty tough to draw, no over-the counter archery tags, usually far away, tons of fun because tons of deer, usually considered to be 12a, 12b, and the 3s) C. And then, to me, the rest of the state falls under units that have mature bucks to be found if you scout or spend good amounts of time in the unit, and these areas can be hunted over the counter archery some of the year. Draw odds are higher, success is lower, access is easy, or at least they are easy to get to. If you pick one of these "Class C" units and stick to it and learn the area, over a few years, it will quickly become your best mule deer unit because you know it so well, its can be a short drive to get there, and you compile so many stories and good times.

So how did the hunt go? -
"Best" mule deer unit is all dependent on your definition of best. Mine is "those units that produce the highest number of deer over 200'' ". So based on that, there really is not room for much debate, the 13s take the cake.

Those are some serious bucks, must be nice to have a free expert "guide";)

Yeah, we all exhausted this topic pretty thoroughly a few months back when it was being passed and clarified. I am shocked the offices don't know what their own policy is. Anyhow, the way the final version reads and with the explanations that we have received, I feel confident personally putting salt out as it is specifically and explicitly excluded from the subsection in question.

That must be some sort of dark colored sea salt block since other types of licks and "mineral" supplements are no longer allowed... Just trying to look out for you.

Immediately out the window goes any notion that western AZ didn't have good antler growth this year...

I have the 2009 or 2010 PSE Stinger, bought it used, it always gets the job done when I am aiming at the right spot I've put it to good hard use, out in the rain, snow, and sticks for three years, but I swear it still basically looks brand new. You don't need to drop $1,000 to be an excellent archery hunter.

Like most places, it is not what it once was. It has been the bottom, or one of the bottom, harvest rate units in the state for like 5 straight years. There are mature bucks hiding in the lower elevation desert hills though.

How can Duck Dynasty be blamed for this again, exactly? Lol

Maybe the one guy that couldn't find his trophy is very well know, and has cell service;)

TLO is Great with hunting, and also very good and consistent with camera angles

Not real massive, and not real wide from what I can tell, but those forks are the real deal. I'd put him 185.

Congrats man, way to get it done!

13b, and, and, and, Henrys? lol

And, water marks take 5 seconds, not a week.

I do not wish him Good Luck, if it was taken illegally, power to the authorities. The guy is a guide as well, I got a mailer from his company a few days ago... The longer it goes with no more details or pics, the more suspect it appears.

There's a LOT of country out there to waste your time looking, scouting, and camping. You drew the best muley tag in the US, hire a guide, or atleast get a scouting package as said before. White House was very very funny. But really, if you don't have like two weeks to scout before the hunt(in which case if you did, and you scouted hard the whole time, you would be so burned out you wouldn't be able to keep motivated during the hunt) then enlist some hired assistance. At this point, the sad thing is most if not all of the best guides are already booked up. Its a big year, so people are willing to pay.
