AGFD news What would you think of a new online club for hunters?
Sneaker replied to AGFD News's topic in News from Arizona Game and Fish Dept.
That is how Utah does it. Guys get calls a week or even days before a hunt supposedly and are told "Someone gave back their tag, you were next in line, do you want it?" -

Just what they are calling it alone makes me cringe: "fee-based online club"??? What the heck is the G&F doing proposing something with a description like that? The benefits they discuss have nothing to do with being "online" even. It is just weird. If they really wanted to do something to charge for new privileges, wouldn't you call it a "Dedicated Hunter" or "Platinum License" club or member etc so people like me don't think the department is 100% ridiculous? -
I've always heard that mouth diaphragm calls are the best, and that is always what I have used, but I don't think me or my family are very good at them. Despite trying out several different calls and companies, I don't have the consistency and control I would like. Plus, when out on a hunt, having the diaphragm in your mouth too long seems to cause the latex to become loosened and the sound to change. I've always heard the "hoochie mama" calls are over used by hunters, and not realistic enough, so I've never given them a shot. I have recently seen a couple AZ videos with some well known guides using the hard plastic, hand held, open-reed type calls that they hang around their necks for their cow calls. What are your thoughts and experience with those types of cow calls?

I noticed that someone has 18 bonus pts for Javelina. If they were putting in for actual hunts, they would have been drawn long ago correct? So why would someone be doing bonus point only for 16 years? There are also a couple 17, 16, and 15 point holders, so maybe there is some 1 tag only amazing hunt somewhere I don't know about? LOL. Seems like alot of time and money for a piggy.

Was an excellent morning out. The first one has a crazy three-antler configuration with a blade sticking out front. The other one is a nice little six with huge pedicles. Also got some surprising bear and lion camera photos I posted in the trail cam forum.

I pulled some of my elk scouting cams, and was very very surprised to see what looks like a very large brown phase bear. The cow pic is for reference. And a big lion a mile away, and what I assume would be the same bear on a different camera. This is in 16a that doesn't have a bear season. I assume this means he is off limits?
-
The white one had no other bones or anything that I could find, it was in the bottom of a gorge and had been there for years. Literally just the head. The weird antler one did appear to have a small hole high mid torso, but not sure if it was weapon induced or not.

What most people seem to follow is if it has been dead long enough for the flesh and most of the skin to be gone when you find it, its fair game. I thinks its a grey area though... unless someone from "the Department" wants to chime in.

I'm curious on the "closed" units. I can only assume they only have hunts in the units that G&F determines have a healthy sustainable bear population? Do they add or take away units ever or often?
-
I know it is asking alot of a picture that offers very little. What do you think this bull might turn out as? This is the only pic I have of him as he walked by really close to the camera.

Hiking is the only way to go! It always surprises me how much hidden water we have in this dry state.

These guys "apparently" have them on their private ranch "special order" up in 18A on I-40. http://fortrockhunting.com/about-ranch.html Maybe a couple broke out and hitchhiked down south...

We got a sarcastic group tonight. Ok Ok, Will this guy grow another half inch before the rut?
-
I found this old cement marker next to a little spring. Anyone seen it before or know where it is?? I would be surprised but maybe someone has been there. Looks like it says Jul 6 1931, Pine Grove?
-
It is kind of deceiving, but he is just a spike that is almost full grown already.

This is where we went on Kodiak, one of the small neighboring islands actually. http://www.whalepasslodge.com/ It was awesome. There were four of us and it was perfect. We killed three deer archery, fished one deep sea day and caught several halibut, and one salmon run river day. The owners were awesome. Whatever you want to fish for or catch, he'll make it happen. You take a cab from Kodiak to a doc somewhere, and he pics you up in his boat and takes you to their island. We went in August.
-
Been trying to find them up the hill. No luck yet. Who has experience there?
-
Muzzy 3 blade, I've never had one open too soon or not open
-
I think it is just because there is such a long time until they could even be used. You have to have your tag number to buy a permit, they may open it back up again soon since the elk and antelope hunters will be asking them, but doesn't do any good until August anyway.
-
Just don't scouting too early if you will be on the boquillas, it is closed to everyone until August: http://huntbigboranch.com/
-
They changed it to say Elk and Antelope are NOT posted... they are really just being jokers with us now.
-
Early bull for everyone!!! Oh wait...

Well, I know of a case where the applicant used a "valid" card, the bank screwed up and may have had a security breach so re-issued the guy's card w/out asking him. The G&F drew his number, tried to use the number, it failed, then re-issued the tag to another and wrote him a "scathing" email chastising him for not using a "valid" charge card number! Talk about insult to injury, it wasn't the guy's fault... did the G&F look into why? no... made someone else happy... but it would have made you very mad if it had happened to you I'm sure... That does not sound consistent with their policy of attempting to contact the owner several times in the case that this happens. I had the same scenario, they called me, I provided my updated card, got my tag.
