Limited Opp Any Elk Hunt Success - Two for One
Sneaker replied to PackerMenges's topic in Elk Hunting
Way to go! We didn't even see an elk on Friday or Sat. for my wife's limited opportunity hunt, let alone 5 bulls! -
Game animals in units with no season just become watchable wildlife. Got a bear in 16a that I wouldn't mind chasing, but no open season there.

I feel that you are fine, but go out of my way to stay out of other hunters hunt as best I can. I was just scouting a few weeks ago for my wifes elk hunt that starts tomorrow, was going down a dirt road before light that has a dirt tank just ahead of me. There was a deer hunt going on. As I got closer to the tank as I drove, I noticed that up ahead on the hill overlooking the tank someone was blinking their flashlight at me, apparently indicating that they were there/would be hunting the water/area. I turned my truck right around and went to another area.

Curious what you guys that have been blessed to have time in the woods recently have seen. Wife has a hunt starting Friday, in the lower Juniper country of 18A. Haven't been able to get out in a few weeks. I assume by this time all the mature bulls have gone solitary? What have you seen this time of year?

To me it seems like the less contour and steepness the terrain has, the more wondering the muley bucks are. Really steep and bigger canyons, they like their canyon or two, but slight rolling hills and flat, they can be anywhere within several miles of their few favorite water sources. Thats kind of what I see anyway.

Hey thats some good news! Gives us a little more hope anyhow. She would love a chance at anything branch antlered.

No, standard app can download most of the maps. I really like the new updates on the most updated app. You have all these options now of what details you want to show at any time at the bottome of your map: current altitude where you are all the time, sunrise/sunset, speed, distance, ascent, you can record map sessions etc.

I just wanted to make sure those who use this app know, I just found there is map they make(free), called "Public Land" that simply is a land ownership map. So if it is private, BLM, State, etc, shows all the colors. Very useful. I really like the app, have had it for a few years, tons of map options to layer on, never failed me in the field.

It is called "Sunk Costs" in economics and accounting. Buyers do not care what you paid, all that matters is current market determined value. This is a common theme lately in these classifieds. Uncle is just bringing up what the current market is. The way I see it, he is doing you a favor.

That is impressive! I live in Mohave County and don't have any holes near what you describe here. Looks like I need to start paying more attention to the flats haha.

New to Arizona hunting. Tips?
Sneaker replied to TripleThreatKris's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Do you live/planning on hunting near Flagstaff, Phoenix, or Tucson? The higher Pines have some different tactics than the deserts... -

I like elkaholic's point, they assume the problem is that there are too many bulls. Maybe the problem is that there are too few cows? It is not hard to imagine what will eventually happen if every time the survery ratio gets a little lopsided their solution is to issue more tags for the sex that has too high of a ratio. Next year kill more bulls. The year after kill more cows, repeat. I know they take hunt success into account, but we need a broader view of this. They need to read up on some stats, correlation is not causation...

"I took a look at your spots, couldn't find anything, don't like them, give me a better spot." Anything sound funky with that? Good luck on the hunt.

Blue Grouse Hunting?'s
Sneaker replied to Couzer's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Weird it says conflicting things in the regs, and the office says its not required. Plus it was free when it was required. Maybe there were just trying to get some kind of count of how many people were even attempting to hunt them, at one time. -
The older I get, the harder I find it to be actively hunting with others. They never are doing things "right". Too loud, too fast, etc etc. But nights alone can be hard, too much time to think about how hard the hunt is, missing the family etc etc, next thing you know, if you aren't careful, you can be driving home and realize over the last 24 hours you convinced yourself to stop doing what you have been waiting all year to do!! That usually doesn't happen if you have someone to talk things through and help motivate you.

Been following him all summer, got him at first light. Story to come. Update: We started hiking into our Plan A area well before light. I scouted hard all summer and this was in the bedroom of the biggest bull located, a straight 6 with one eyeguard that didn't curve up much My dad was with me to help call. During one of our pauses to stay quiet, rest, and listen, THERE IT WAS! The first bugle of the season sounds out through the dark. (Dark is relative as the moon was quite bright.) I couldn't believe our luck. As we waited in the dark, he sounded on 3 or 4 individual times, just short single sound bugles maybe 200 yards away on the hill to our right. It didn't sound like an old experienced bull. We crept over and set up on the opposite hill with dad further up and me 50 yards below him and the plan was to wait until shooting light to try and cow call him in. To my surprise, very soon after I was somewhat settled and starting to try to range find possible shooting lanes, dad starts doing a few cow calls?? I didn't feel it was light enough yet so I was pretty surprised and a little perturbed. He called a few times a few minutes apart, and then I heard a bugle response. Come to fine out, when he got to his calling spot, he could see two elk on the far hill heading the other direction and almost cresting the far hill. In an effort to stop them, he started calling. It worked, and one of the elk stopped. He said he just stopped and starred toward our hill for a long time, and then finally after maybe the third or fourth set of chirps, he just couldn't stand it, and started heading our way. I wasn't aware of any of that until all the sudden I heard crashing on the far hill. He was easy to see, by this time it was pretty light and his huge body and white antler tips were easy to see with the naked eye. I pulled up my binos, and it was my bull! It was too good to be true. He paused a couple of times on the way down to us, but he came down crashing and zig zaging through the scrub and into the perfect shooting lane as he started coming up our hill. As he was behind the final bush, I pulled back, but he saw movement and stopped and looked at me. 25 yards! His head was clear, then a step and his neck, then he started walking, and before he ran or circled or got behind a huge tree, I let it fly. Was not the best shot, the Lumenok worked super however. The shot was the only thing not perfect about the whole scenario. He was walking and turning and I should have tried to stop him. I was really down at first, but somehow I was one of the lucky few that still hit a vital spot not in the "vitals" as blood was awesome and he didn't go maybe 150 yards. I'm grateful it all came together so well. Got the cape and meat taken care of. Anyone know anyone in Kingman that would be willing to score him for me?

I now have the 2013 Elk Survey/Harvest data in my possession if anyone wants any of that info. The department has high staff turnover and vacant positions so they won't be producing a "2013" book, the next one will be labeled "2014" I'm told.
