Does anybody NOT buy scent free products for archery hunts?
Sneaker replied to naturegirl's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
If you want to get Randy Ulmer level obsessive about it all, here is part of what he does: I limit the amount of animal products I eat for a month leading up to the hunt and during the hunt. I use scent-free soap and then apply Scent Shield hair and body deodorant gel to all parts of my body. I carry approximately ten pairs of clean running shoes with me and put a new pair on every day (a great deal of your odor comes from your feet). I put baking soda in each of my shoes before I put them on. When I buy shoes, I get 100% synthetic shoes (no leather). You can wash these synthetic shoes over and over and they’ll never shrink. I take chlorophyll tablets each day for a few weeks leading up to the hunt and then each morning during the hunt. I brush and floss my teeth with baking soda at least twice a day. I rarely wear a belt, but if I do, I never wear the same belt for more than a day without washing it. I rarely carry a pack, but if I do, I change it out or wash it if it gets sweaty (I take 3-4 packs with me on a hunt). http://westernhunter.net/blogs/news/34290753-randy-ulmer-high-level-scent-elimination -
It seems like on most of the youtube hunts I see they don't do anything for their face. I had planned to do a face net last year, but things happened fast when my bull started coming in and I went without. My elks life was over pretty quickly after that.

JLW, thats awsome, looks like effective July 2013. Now they just have to fight with people about what "not fresh" means...

"If an individual wishes to keep such wildlife parts found in the field (other than shed antlers), he/she must contact the Arizona Game and Fish Department so an officer can determine the cause of death of the animal. If it is determined the animal died from a natural cause, such as predation, disease, fights, falls, drowning, lightning, etc., the wildlife part may be possessed by the individual. If the officer determines the animal died from an unnatural cause, such as wounding loss, illegal activity or vehicle collision, no part of the wildlife may be possessed or transported. If the cause of death cannot be determined and the wildlife part is fresh, meaning bone or tissue moisture is present and the part is not oxidized, possession will not be allowed. This also applies to parts, such as skulls, where the age cannot be determined because the finder has boiled and/or cleaned them. If the cause of death cannot be determined and the part is old (with no moisture and oxidized), possession will be allowed. Just remember, the key is to contact the Arizona Game and Fish Department prior to picking up the part. There is no way these parts may be lawfully possessed until the department has determined the cause of death." http://www.azgfd.net/wildlife/hunting-news/are-you-shed-antler-hunting-legally/2009/03/12/

Don't leave them out in an open in obvious spots. Hide them, put them up high in a tree, locks can help, almost all cameras have a day, night, or 24 hour setting so you can set it to only take day photos if you wish. I have also had good luck with putting them on the ground if you have a protected spot(fence line, thick bush, rock pile) that can protect it from getting stepped on or licked by animals and also makes it hard for people to see the cam as well.

I'm having Kaibab withdrawals from here in the desert...

question... shooting targets versus animals
Sneaker replied to naturegirl's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
Disregard this if you already know, but FYI, the vitals on your target aren't drawn anatomically correct either, I would say. They should be around 4'' further to the left, and maybe a tad down too. -
1st light on my only archery bull

Hunt were nobody else does, problem solved:) But seriously, I've had very little problems with any units in the 15s through 18s when the camera is hid half decent or a hike in. These units see only a fraction of the traffic the higher mountains and more popular units do.

I assume you put down some salt, if you are wanting more quantity of pics, put a cam on a water. If it doesn't keep raining you should have a ton of action, but don't be to surprised if it gets stolen that way either. You have to really hide it, put it up super high, lock it up, or a combination of those to avoid most human interference. -
Its hard to kill something over salt, harder than water. I feel it is ethical.

Often very dry there and not alot of natural water, world class high demand game species, people are willing to spend time, money, effort on the area. I would think some of it has to do with how proactive and motivated the ranchers are at establishing permanent waters as well. Units that have alot of cattle tanks don't have as big of a need for game waters. Its true the maps do not show all of the game and fish tanks. I know of a couple really old game waters that don't show up that still work just fine.

Is it just me or is someone at Kings not familiar with what a true 200" looks like, considering the full arm extension and all... Make no mistake, congrats to the kid, I'd shoot that buck on 95% of my hunts.

Thats a shooter for me all day, no matter the score. I'd guess 370 range.

That would rival some of the best draw tag combos ever

Those are the small ones eh?

Preserving Game in the Field & While Traveling

I do tons of frozen water bottles. If I expect to be out for more than a few days, then I get some dry ice to put into the ice cooler to prolong the start of melting. -
Keeping bonus points the first time seems like too big of a problem, everyone would now have TWICE the reason to get every mom and grandma and aunt 15 bonus points. What about all or nothing, everyone in the applicant group has to surrender or none of them can surrender? I don't like the premium members get more privileges model, it seems like we are headed to the Hunger Games of hunting.
