Reminder: Trail cam meeting/webcast tonight at main G&F office
Sneaker replied to Lv2hnt's topic in The Campfire
What I have never heard answered yet is why putting a camera on a dirt tank would be a unfair "fair chase" violation, but why hanging a camera on a natural seep or spring is not against fair chase? Not sure why they won't just come out and say the real issue. Its really not a fair chase issue or they would just ban all cameras period because they are "not fair". The only real problem is the situations with tons of cameras on one water. -
In highschool we did Whale Pass Lodge in the beginning of August I think. It was a little tough bushwhacking from beach to above treeline every day on the different islands we hunted, Whale, Kodiak, and Raspberry, but it was a lot of fun and we chased alot of deer with our bows. I want to try it again, been thinking maybe Prince of Whales Island trip though to avoid the grizzlies haha.

Reminder: Trail cam meeting/webcast tonight at main G&F office

The fact that they only proposed banning them on "developed" waters means deep down it is not truly about fair chase. I can hang a camera on a spring or on salt and later kill off of it, but I can't hang a camera on a dirt cattle pond and then kill off of it? Meaning its more ethical to kill off a spring or off salt than a dirt tank? If anything I could argue that salt is the least fair chase of those options. They really are just trying to address congregating of cameras in populated spots to the point that it affects wildlife habits and creates hunter-hunter conflicts. I doubt they will be willing to call out specific units for the ban, so I think the only way to be totally fair to everyone in the state is to say Zero camera use is allowed in units with active deer or elk hunts in them, August through November. Simple, end of story. Game and fish would have to do no enforcement because the hunters would self police probably and do the department a favor and take down any cameras they happened to come across that were still out during the hunts, as many would probably not being ok with a fellow hunter getting an "unfair" leg up on camera use... funny, not funny. -
Don Martin wrote up a summary article in our paper about the Commission Meeting in Kingman last week. I was planning to attend and speak but couldn't get away from work that afternoon. 101 emails sent to Cook about the proposal. 46 for, 55 against. Mine was one of them. I like using cameras to scout because its really fun, kids love doing it with me, and it helps me be a more effective and selective hunter. I was thinking a middle ground might be to allow them only for pre-season scouting, disallow during times when that unit has active deer or elk hunts, but some units have those hunts from Aug until Jan so only the Aug guys would benefit... Maybe we could just put restrictions on the strip deer hunts and the most premium elk hunts, no during-season use on those since those seem to be the biggest problem? "Jay Cook, who is heading the department’s effort to address the Article 3 items, noted that the trail camera issue had generated more written comments than any of the other proposed recommendations. Cook said the department had received 46 emails in support of the one-quarter mile restriction on the use of passive trail cameras, while 55 comments had been received that did not support the recommendation." https://kdminer.com/news/2018/may/08/commission-postpones-trail-camera-decision-another/

Sportsmans Input Sought by ConserveandProtectAZ.org-Unit wide Raffle and Auction Tags
Sneaker replied to Jay Scott's topic in The Campfire
Doesn't pass the smell test to me at this point. Seems like they are just trying to take advantage of the recent lion initiative as a scare tactic to get what they want(more auction and raffle tags). Nothing about this seems like it mandates that it can ONLY be funded by taking tags away and giving them to auctions and raffles. Why not go about raising funds in some different ways? They know all the average joe Arizona sportsmen are against reallocating tags away from the general draw but are trying to do it anyway. -

Proposed rule change - no archery hunting in 1/4 mile of residences
Sneaker replied to TwoGuns's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Yes, with archery equipment, if you are following all other applicable rules(if outside city limits if city doesn't allow, if not on posted private property, etc). -
Proposed rule change - no archery hunting in 1/4 mile of residences
Sneaker replied to TwoGuns's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Here in Mohave County there are tons of remote dirt-road "subdivisions" in good habitat that the locals hunt archery in and around for pigs and deer. I haven't heard of any bad stories of people not playing nice around here. When they say "complaints about persons archery hunting near their private property" That is ridiculous as you are allowed to hunt ON private property if they don't post it, let alone "near" it. Its the law. Maybe they meant to say near their private "residences"? More rules and regulations are good right? -
Deer of the Southwest by Jim Heffelfinger
Sneaker replied to Speedy's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
He was just on the Grittybowman podcast discussing southern Arizona hunting. He mentioned it was coming out soon with another printing of it, so the book would be for sale again shortly.... -
You are not correct. There are several parts to the new proposals. Live actions is one section, regular game cameras on water is a different section.

As a suggestion "cameras on a developed water during any big game hunting season for the unit in which a water is located is unlawful"
-
If an officer pulls up to a water in August and there is a camera there, he would not have enough evidence in front of him to claim that this law was broken and he could take it in my opinion. What if I go to hunt my favorite water source and sneak in before daylight, and after light I see a camera on the water directly across from me? Do I leave? Do I go throw the dude's camera in a bush so if an officer pulls up I don't get a ticket?? Seems like there is so much wrong with the way it is worded. Needs to be all or nothing. What really matters is how the officers are going to interpret it.

I have a brother with a bunch of points and the new point guard system to thank for allowing me to chase bulls this September while carrying sharp projectiles!

New AZGF rule (proposed, which means it’s a done deal) about game cameras:

So meeting is May 4th, 2018 up here in good old Mohave County. When would they be effective? This is apparently different than the guidelines cycle? -
I bought one last year, I just activate it for a month timeframe that I know I will be using it. To be honest I used it on one hunt, it worked perfect, but the other hunts I went on all had cell service so I didn't even need to take it. Sad face.

Not really, some years they don't even kill at all, which would be rough after a long wait to get the tag. Very low density of animals around here but it can be done if you scout enough and have alot of time to hunt, per usual on harder hunts. A buddy didn't kill on the muzzy a couple years ago. Here are some screen shots from the survey harvest data. 2 of the last three years they are reporting zero hunt success. Our region's game manager says on hunts with tags this low they call all the hunters to get good data. On the survey screen shot, the first column is bucks seen(1 buck in 2014, 2 in 2015!), the second column is does seen.

I shot this buck on Monday at noon. My arrow hit further back than I would have liked, I was a little worried, but knew it was probably lethal. I waited 4 hours and started the track job. Great blood for 20 yards, drops for another 30 yards then nothing. Oh no. Hunter's nightmare. Completely lost his track in short order, tried some hail marry circles but no dice. The next day with my brother's help, I was able to extend the trail out to 200 yards, but it was only a little drop every once in a while, then we lost his track again completely. He never ran or bedded in that stretch, just walking. I started gridding in hopes of getting lucky. But we ran out of time. I came home Tuesday night pretty down about it. The area is literally a thick sea of Pinions and Junipers for miles and miles so I knew my odds of finding him were really low. I worked Wed but wanted to give it another try. I did some reading on CW about finding downed deer using crows/ravens, studied my gps map tracks, and figured my best bet was the birds. I expected that, being dead three days, the circle of life and his forrest buddies would be laying full claim to him by now. Thursday afternoon would be my only time available to try in the next 12 days, so I worked in the morning and ran out to do my last ditch hike. I would stop to listen for birds every 20 or 30 seconds. About a half mile in, I saw and heard crows in a few different directions 15 minutes apart. My plan was to get to the nearest mountain and glass the expanses for hopefully the carrion party. As I started my climb I heard some birds up ahead of me on the mountain. A few minutes later I started seeing a few crows flying close to my immediate area. A little later a VULTURE flew by. Things were getting interesting... A few seconds later two vulture flew up from the ground and I knew I was onto something. There he was. Been dead 3 days. More points than I thought. Sad I lost the meat. Died mid walk apparently, .7 miles and 300 feet elevation gain from the shot. A couple lessons learned: -Be a better shot -Crows wont necessarily be right on the animal, and it may not be tons of them. There were only a few, but their periodic calls as they apparently flew around watching the vultures pointed me in the right direction. -Wounded animals sometimes don't mind going for a long uphill hike

I've gone on record saying how pleased I was with my 10 power HD Prime binoculars, price and performance, in the past. Well things have made a turn for the worst. The focus knob fell off in October. They are supposed to have a lifetime warranty on this level bino with Zen-Ray, but I think they are out of business. Been calling and emailing for three months now with no responses. Doug at cameraland says the owner of Zen-ray has been mia for months. If things change I will post an update.

Yes Lakepowell.com is the really the only legal way to really rent a houseboat on Powell. Aramark is the licensed concessioner still. See below. Q. Why can't I rent a private houseboat on the lake? A. The rental concession on the lake is handled by a single professional concessionnaire for a good reason. The concessionaire must take on the cost and responsibility of many environmental and management concerns at the lake. Dock maintenance, waste and utilities management, recycling efforts and improvements are largely handled by the concessionaire. The investment here is in the hundreds of millions of dollars and is repaid under contract with the revenues created through rentals, restaurants, etc.A legal alternative to renting a houseboat is "buying" a houseboat - or buying a share of a houseboat. Commonly (and erroneously) referred to as a time-share, a shared-ownership boat can be a rewarding and luxurious way to enjoy Lake Powell as from 4 to 26 different owners share in the upkeep, storage and enjoyment of a top-quality boat.

I would have a hard time selling my kills, especially some of the good ones like some of those bucks. Do you just have more than you care to keep or got an urgent money demand?

I tried again and the second time it did let me buy.

Says out of stock now! Missed it.

418" Bull & Added Pictures and summer scouting pics

Nice bulls. I would be happy with any of those bulls on cam on any elk scouting trip I ever do.
