Hey Bob, I'll bite, the only two things in your statement i agree with is "Thieves suck" and putting a camera out where no one would find it. I got a hunch even your dad and granddaddy would have put cameras out for game had the technology been there in their day. Get off the beating your chest and learn to hunt crap. How many Mountain lions have you seen, or bear, or fox and bobcats etc.etc.. We put cameras out for the fun of it, and for catching things on it you would never see in your life time naturally and for seeing what is living in the area, yes for hunting. They are fun and it gets most of us out in the field year around. It can also be a lot of work but pretty darn exciting to get to your camera to see the new pictures on it no matter what they might be. We all hope for big bucks but there's more than that with cameras. Oh and by the way, last I heard baiting is illegal so don't even go there. I've posted this before but in case some of you missed it I use a lock box I made that wont allow you to pull the chip, I hang it up about 12 to 15 feet off the ground on a limb less tree using a tree climber tree stand. I have a chain locked that does not bite into the tree but rests on a limb on the back side. I put a rock behind the camera between it and the tree to get it at the right angle. I use a red dot light to center the camera. I am usually a ways back in and never put it on water but a trail leading to water, food or bedding source. Most folks don't look up so chances of seeing it are remote. If someone wants it that bad they will need to go get a tree stand climber and bolt cutters to get it down. That in itself is a lot of work. GBA

I have been using chains in mud for years. They are the best. Nothing compares including letting air out of the tires or having skinnier tires, although both of those things do help. Mud fills the treads then its slick on slick rock. chains bite the rocks. They also act like additional treads on the side walls as well. I learned the hard way not to go with cheap snow chains. Buy heavy duty chains, otherwise it sux to be in the mud taking off chains that just wrapped around your axles, and then guess what?? your stuck and your jack is sunk too! I had a 2 wheel drive ford F150 pull a Chevy Duramax 4 by 4 out of a deep mud hole 2 years ago and I backed the truck up into the same hole he was stuck in. A little embarrassing for the dude with the 4 by 4 Chevy but a testament to what chains can do in the mud. Over the holiday weekend I was in 5BN (Marshal Lake area) with my 39 foot fifth wheel. Im sure most know about the rain, we got hammered. My buddy and I were in deep mud. We jacked up the truck, put on the chains and pulled the trailer out up a slight hill with no issues other than getting my hands a little muddy taking the chains back off. I have a F250 power stroke 4 by 4 now. I only chained up the rear tires. If I was to go out in this stuff now, I would definitely chain up front and back As someone said, put the chains on up on dry ground or gravel before you head in. I also carry an extra board to put my jack on. A pair of irrigation boots and a small tarp go a long ways too. Good luck to you all headed out this weekend, kill a good one and be safe! GBA

in 2009 during my elk hunt my brother and I saw a huge double drop tine Muley. What a buck of a life time! I drempt about going up after him the next year. That dream was shattered when a guy from Flaggstaff killed him during the rifle season. I believe he went 205 non-typical gross. . That was the only drop tine I have ever seen. GBA

Great buck! got a story?? were you still hunting, ground blind or other?? GBA

Wow, that last photo is messed up! Isn't there a way around that boulder mess to get to where you want to go? Nothing would be important enough to put a pack animal through something like that unless it was someones life need savin. Mulepackerhunter, I agree with naturegirl, I really don't think there are that many on CWT that have pack critters. How was your hunt? Any pictures to share? GBA

Please ask F&G to move the deer hunt out another week, even more importantly please ask them to move the Archery Elk hunt out one more week as well. The bulls don't get really cranked up until the last week of September. Best time to be in the field as far as I'm concerned. Otherwise don't change a thing. I don't want to see the archery deer season either shortened or to overlap archery elk just for another week of horn growth. My 02 GBA

I have a LOT of scorpions at my place in Queen Creek. I have killed as many as 33 in one night hunting them down. Most of them are in the planter cement decorative blocks or on my block wall. I have them under control now and thanks to the help of DE I dont have to hunt late at night so much anymore. BTY, Not to rob this thread but if you get stung and are allergic like my wife is there are only 2 hospitals with an experimental anti venom that works like a charm. One is Mercy Gilbert hospital on the 202 and Val-Vista. the other is Chandler Regional on Dobson south of Ray I believe. Im not alregic and have been stung a few times. My wife gets scary bad and her eyes start twitching. GBA

Thanks, that sounds pretty much like what I would do also. I take my goats in and do all my scouting and hauling camp in and out for those trips. Then generally the weekend before the hunt I cashe a few items for the camp, (always worry if I hide it well enough) The rest I pack in on my back but the goats stay home during the hunt. If i get something down I will pack the animal or as much of it as I can out, the rest stays stashed until I return the next day with the goats to haul it all back out. GBA

And Goats! Had to edit, messed up and put in my reply to your post below. LOL At this point I would be more interested to see how many use pack animals? Probably a few but most might not be on CWT site. Outside of that I would be up for a Packing Forum. For now I will keep adding to the "pinned" Pack Animal post as I go out on my scouting trips and such. GBA

MULEPACKHUNTER, I'm curious, do you pack in an ice chest on your mules or does the ice stay back at the truck and trailer in case you get something down? Also, do high line your mules and hunt on foot or are they with you? GBA

AZHUNTER05, no offence but Schwacker and the Ulmer Edge are nothing alike. You may think they look alike but they actually deploy opposite of one another. Schwacker is a jack knifing type head that deploys after it has went through the hide inside the animal. The wing blade axial point is at the bottom of the ferrule so that the tip of the blade comes out of the ferrule like a jack knife blade. The Ulmer Edge is a rearward deploying head that fully deploys prior to going through the hide and stays locked open. The pivot point is at the wing tips (center of the ferrule) that deploy the blades at the rear not at the tip of the ferrule . I prefer a rearward deploying head that fully opens/deploys prior to entry, Schwacker does not. If im going to use a mechanical its going to be for a big hole on entry and exit, Ulmer Edge isn't as big as Id like nor does the ferrule penetrate as deep as id like prior to the blades contacting the hide. Who's Not Afraid to Hunt Down South?

25-06, found an illegal hanging in a mesquite tree?? Do you mean he was hung by the neck? What turned out from that or did you ever find out? GBA -
To Biscuit or not to Biscuit? That is the question.
GotBowAz replied to Scooter's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
Hhmm, I don’t think I have ever seen a recurve with a WB on it. I'm not saying it hasn’t been done but most traditional archers I have seen in the field run around with a finger over their arrow like the Indians did. Which is also what I do with my drop away. Oh that and I have a foam shelf the arrow sits on with my finger over it until I draw it back. I'm not knocking WB in the least, IMO it’s a great rest. My point is my frustration when people say because its mechanical or because of moving parts I won’t use it, its one more thing that can go wrong. If you pay attention to your equipment and know it inside out there won’t be anything that goes wrong unless the part has an inferior design such as some mechanical BH’s. If you feel there is a bigger advantage in a WB because in holds the arrow for you then so be it. But to say it has moving parts and still shoot a compound doesn’t sit well with me, I totally disagree with that statement. If its too much trouble to keep up with or to look over and keep operational then that’s one thing. Personally I haven’t had any issues that I didn’t create myself, that wasn’t the rests fault, it was mine. Loose a set screw or bolt out of your WB and see how well it works, it doesn’t have to be a moving part to be defective. GBA -

In another forum, issues with whisker biscuits and tuning for broad heads. How old is the WB? We had the same problem with my wife's set up. Her Muzzy 4 blades all hit a few inches below her field tips. Originally I just adjusted her sight for the BHs but, after a year of that I replaced the "cartridge" in her WB and the problem was gone, instantly. We bought her bow used so, I can't say exactly how old the rest was at the time. Even the WB can have issues. Check over your equipment. GBA -

Becker, no offence but do you shoot a compound bow?? I get kind of aggravated to hear people talk about moving part failures but when it comes to their bows which has MORE mechanical moving parts than anything in archery there isn't one bad thing to say about them, or the bows moving parts and possible failures. Now why is that? Everything I shoot is mechanical, from my bow, broad heads and yes my arrow rests. But I also treat each one just like I do my bow. I know the working inside and out, I know their functions better than most people know how to use their keyboards. As a result I don’t have failures. Do you flex your carbon arrows? If the answer is yes what are you looking for? Defects maybe? That goes for all of your equipment on and off the field, Your bows, broad heads and arrow rests should all be looked over for possible defects, dust, dirt and function. But to shoot a compound bow and make a statement you won’t use a product it because of moving parts and why chance it just blows my mind. Just my thoughts. If you shoot only a recurve disregard my little rant. GBA -
Here's what I did to keep from hurting the trees. I hang my cameras by the chain on a limb up high on the backside of the tree. Then I place a rock behind the camera to get the right angle and let gravity do the rest. it wont damage the tree. If you lift the camera the chain is loose so it doesn't even strangle the tree. Very tree friendly. If you look closely at the camera box you will see a red dot light attached to the top, that is a pointer that centers the picture. I point it at a target, rock or whatever and that target will be center of the picture. I bought the box, chains, locks and light for right at 20 bucks. GBA

Yup, if they want it that bad they will take it but to do so they will have to hike back out a few miles and go get a tree climber to get mine. Its 15 feet off the ground, in a heavy metal box I built myself and chained with a lock. Im gonna make them work for it! FYI, having picture from over the top are awesome too. Also most people poking around through the woods don't look up! Just us tree stand hunters.

If your vehicle is out on the side of a road or highway no matter how far its pulled off a patrol officer/DPS will stick a huge red sticker on it with a time and date to have the vehicle removed or it will be towed within 24 hours. I have had this happen and I was pulled way off the road in a pullout area and went hunting, those stickers are a pain to get off, and I know the officer had to know I was hunting by location and my bow case on the front seat Grrrrrrrrr, what a jerk. I can see this happening to our cameras and stands/blinds in the future. I would rather see that then them just taking them at will but come on, 72 hours? that's ridiculous!! Maybe something like the 14 day camping rule. I guess if I had to I could live with that but for them to take them at 72 hours they are just being jerks IMO. That’s a stupid rule. Can anyone find this in writing?? GBA

Right after the rains I kept finding turds about 2 inches long and maybe 3/8 to a half inch in diameter and on my back patio. At first I didn't know what it was, my dogs let nothing in the back yard without me finding it in pieces, except people and other dogs. I finally took the time to look a little closer and found insects including a scorpion in the turd. I figured it out after that. Guess the dogs have figured out toads are not something to mess with. I did find one in the pool skimmer, yuck! GBA

ROMOCASADOOR, I haven't shot these yet, but by looks of the new design those broad heads should do just fine on Elk with a 450 grain arrow or better. Wide blades take a little more oomph but when they have the right momentum they will leave one heck of a hole. Good luck with your hunt. I hope to see you post up gory entrance and exit holes with a smile! GBA
-
Yup, I seen them, those are once awesome holes. Did you happen to notice that they we weren’t from broadside shots and that one blade stayed on the outside of the hide rather that going through the animal, at leas that’s the way it looks to me? Those holes would NOT have happened on a typical and highest average shot broadside…period. The biggest hole/slice was from a tree stand bearing nearly straight down. It opened up one side. I asked for entrance hole from Schwacker on other sites, I finally got a few guys that initially wouldn’t show pic’s of entrance holes to be honest about their assessment on entry shots. No thanks on a one inch entry hole. That was average on both deer and elk for broadside or quartering away shots. Exit were massive. I just don’t count on exits wounds on Elk quartering away. Again, on my own research of these heads, and I have admitted they would be the only jack knifing type mechanical I would use, but the entry holes on average are not for me, therefore I am not comfortable shooting them. Go on line and try to find entry hole advertized for Schwacker. You won’t find many if any except what you see on this site. GBA
-
With any broadhead of any kind I am not worried about how they perform through a shoulder blade. I don't intend to hit one. I'm sure most fixed blade heads wouldn’t hold up either. With a Schwacker I worry about a small entrance and no exit wound because I hit off side bone. With a Rage I worry about blades opening during flight or on a stalk. I don’t shoot them because I have no confidence in them. But the last thing I would worry about is their material not holding up on a broadside or quartering away shot in the boiler room. GBA

Personally there is nothing wrong with Nap Killzones and I wouldn't hesitate shooting a big ole stinky bull with them. Just be sure you are shooting a stiff spined heavy 450 grain or better arrow. This is not to say shoot Mechanical's because fixed blades wont shoot with your field points. There does seem to be a tuning issue however I have heard Muzzy can be tough as heck to dial in with some set ups. Some people have went to quick spin fetches and brought them in. I have complete confidence in Killzones, if you don’t have that kind of confidence in your heads or set up them don’t shoot them, find something you do have confidence in. GBA

I'll stick with the Killzones and not have to go to all the trouble of collars and tying dental floss or a strand of copper wire around the blades to hold them shut. GBA
