My buddy and I stopped in Friday and picked up some Broadheads at 20 percent off. Great deal guys, thanks Ross Outdoors! I got some field tips for FMJ's and some knocks while I was at it. Great store but I have to admit we were a little thrown off when I saw Ross Rentals on the front of the store and thought for a minute I was driving into the wrong place. Then I saw the ground blinds as we turned the corner to enter the parking lot out the store front and was relieved I didn't drive all the way from Queen creek for nothing, GBA

Non - Typical, your not getting any snow up there in that elevation? Wrestling season is upon us, getting home way after dark. The rains greened up my lawn as well and they are just now drying out, guess who has to mow come Thanksgiving morning! GBA

MULEPACKHUNTER, what is that in the picture with the bear on the left hand side. Is that an old piece of carpet? It almost looks like sheep hide maybe stretched over some dead branches? Sounds like you had some pretty cool experiences in the unit even if you didn't find any deer. Thanks for sharing the pictures. pretty cool and some neat country. GBA

Possibly forest service?? They will take them if they find them and if they have been left for over 72 hours. Got to do better jobs hiding them. If it was up a tree like the OP said and there was no limbs to get to it someone went to a lot of work to get it, possibly either a scum bag or forest service, not a bear. Most times mine are off the ground and extremely hard to get to without either a climber tree stand or with lineman equipment for climbing poles. It stinks to have to go to all that work and I think forest service are also being jerks IMO if they are taking them also. Sorry man, sure hope your son gets his elk! GBA

I've done it many times prior to getting pack goats. Hike it in, stash your water, a good bedroll and a tent and anything else that you might need for a few days. As doogan said above, use these times to get more scouting in. Then the day of your hunt hike in your food, gun and sleeping bag. This will allow you to glass longer, be in the area without disturbing it as much and save you energy you will need for packing out your deer. When the hunt is done just reverse the process. Im getting older so I like a little more comfortable camp these days so I now have pack goats carry in the loads in and out. GBA

Wyane's Place Saddlery & farrier Service. In Tonapah Az. It's ways out there but the gal does some outstanding work. I have friends of mine with some of her work and its really high quality and she makes anything under the sun with high quality leather. 5804 S. 339th Ave. 602-695-1221 GBA -
Sometimes soft grunts will work, I grunted a little 4 by 2 buck in to me that I was watching chasing doe's on a hill side. After a couple of loud grunts to get his attention I grunted soft and he came running in. He is a young buck, Im not sure if a mature buck would come in as aggressive or not. I shot him at 40 yards broadside. He stopped while he was looking back behind him at the doe's he left behind. Pretty sure he would have come in had I had a decoy for him to see. I have never had any luck with Coue's using a bleat. They just flat ignore it. GBA

Shedhunteraz, Curios as to what method are you going to take him with? Tree stand, ground blind?? Notice I didnt say "try" to take him?? What a beautiful looking bull. Good luck, cant wait to see the pic's!! GBA

For quick scanning 10x42's, for spot and stalk 10X42's and for sit all day glassing 10x42's. For me i find they are the best all around glass for all applications. I use a light aluminum mono pole I made out of a broken tripod for long sits to glass. With it being adjustable I found I could hold up my bino's and glass all day without tiring. GBA

Coming from a friend that hunts lions with dogs and trail cameras. If a cat shows up on your camera be there in exactly 5 days of when the picture was taken and the cat will be back. GBA

Thought Id add some pictures of just the boys out with me over the weekend. We took a tough uphill 3 mile hike to check out some new country and a spring in a burn area. They were tuckered out by the end of the day. Even though i didn't care for the area after looking it over it was still a very nice day to pack and great exercise for the boys. GBA

I shot a Fletch Hunter release for year and years. I killed a lot of critters with it and I still have it. In a hurry it was a little hard to get it closed onto the loop and I always had to look down (making more movement) to get it hooked on. I went out and tried a few releases and I settled on the Tru Fire hardcore for a couple of reasons. First off just by feel alone I could hook the sting loop on really easy without looking down. That was key for me, then one of the best options is how it folds back out of the way so when I'm glassing im not having to turn it around to the backside of my hand or have it whacking against the side of my Bino’s.

I know this has probably been beat to death and Im not sure if this applies but it appears to me that Game cameras have rules from forestry and controversies regarding them. Be a curios research why they feel the need to remove them within 72 hours and exactly what controversy there is with having them in the field for extended periods. GBA

surprised the national forests haven't been shut down.
GotBowAz replied to 4Falls's topic in The Campfire
So who is around to close the stuff off? Are they doing it for free? Im pretty sure if I was not being paid I would not be doing much of anything except maybe looking into other employment options. Id be pretty upset if I had an elk tag in an area typically open to travel and it was closed down. Went by Roosevelt this weekend and across the little roads going to the lake in most places was one simple barricade and a yellow or pink ribbon.I did see that the little road going down to the south end of the lake by the bridge on the river was open. I don't know if the people that were down there removed whatever might have been used to keep them out or if it was left open on purpose. I do know the businesses around the lake are suffering. GBA -
Sorry folks but I do believe there is a doe hunt in the kiabab. Junior hunt if I remember correctly. It is still just one deer no matter a year. GBA

Years! With that said I shot my first and only Coue's 4 years ago at 40 yards out of a tree stand looking at a steep mountain side. I glassed him up chasing some doe's in January. I grunted really loud a couple of times to get his attention. When he looked my direction I gave him a soft grunt and he ran right in. he stopped broadside, looked over his shoulder so I drilled him. Several blown spot and stalks, I really want to get one this way. Im getting closer ever year. GBA

For 25 plus years I have had a salt impression in an elk area that the elk are only in during the rutting season. Cattle hit the mineral blocks I set in it every year. There is a tree nearby I use for a portable tree stand. I went to check on it this season as i was helping a buddy up on his hunt. When I got there I found a trail cam on it, no biggie then I look over and straight in line with the elk trail was a new ground blind. the worst of that was the people who made it cut down every little tree in the area. The set up could only be for a head on shot. Regardless of their lack of elk hunting knowledge when setting up a ground blind I left them a note on their chair and told them to call me if they get something down and left my number. I told them I would come help. I then went over to the camera and gave them the call me sign, they never did. I never saw or met them either. Darn it, I missed a fun opportunity with those guys. After I got back to camp I saw my decoy. I wish I would have had it with me to go back and forth in front of the camera with it. I cant imagine how funny that would have been to the guys getting the pictures, I would have gotten a big laugh out of it too. Point here is I walked away as it is public land. i have worked on that site for years and years but it doesn't matter. If I truly wanted to hunt it I know the elk travel routes to and from the stand, i just would have hung my stand further up into the travel route. GBA

Im sure you know Jeremy is related to Rusty and Randy Ulmer?? That's not to say that the Ulmer head inst a good one, that also not to say Jeremy isn't a great guy, I have never met him. We chated by e-mail briefly when Rusty was coming out with the edge. My hunting partner from Sunflower cant say enough about Jeremy. The Ulmers Egde a great mechanical head and a lot of thought went into it. I perfer two things and this is just personal preference. 1) on a mechanical head I want the body/furrel penetration at least an inch deep prior to the blades entering the hide. Ulmers are a half way up the body, more towards the tip. 2) I shoot mechnicals for one reason only, I want huge holes at 2 inches or more slice on entry 100 percent of the time. Ulmers is too small for a mechnical in my opinion. There are fixed heads out there that are nearly as wide and have at least another blade. With that said, no doubt they will kill elk and perform well. GBA

Attention Campers/Hunters New rule in affect on leaving Trailer in the woods
GotBowAz replied to muzzlehunter75's topic in The Campfire
Is your trailer not left unattended when your out in the field hunting?? The point made about those complaints from people getting ripped off was mostly last year in 5BN Ashurst lake area and some in 6A near the quiet areas. They got ripped off while they were out HUNTING!! Small generators tools anything not locked down. So glad I tent hunt and get way off the main roads. There is no way I could camp on top of other people just to have the comforts of a trailer. I wouldn't want to worry while out hunting about getting ripped off so close to a main road either. GBA -
I have a friend of mine the hires a gal out of Flagstaff. I will see if I can get her info and pass it on. There are a few people around that are hired to do this and from what I understand the gal my buddy hired made awesome hot meals. GBA

If you don't have any tensioners then use heavy bungee cords. Instead of hooking them on with hooks just run them around the chain between them and the tire in equal places and in at least 5 places. I have done this many times before I got my new chains I ordered. Also, tie the little left over chain back with a cord, otherwise the extra chain will whack your fender wells. Don’t run over 15 to 20 miles an hour if you can help it and you should be just fine. Bungee cords are cheap. I throw them out after each use. GBA

I usually buy my new year OTC deer tag the same time I buy my license every year. I like the idea of a PDF to save a copy if I ever lost mine. Not sure I like having to do two different things that I have always done at one time. Guess there is trade offs. Has anyone done the math for buying a lifetime license verses when becoming eligible for the pioneer license and what it saves?? I imagine it may depend on how old you are but I'm not sure at 51 buying a lifetime license is in my best interest at this time. Might have been when I was 18. GBA

Creed, i ordered mine on line. Non-typical, I don't run the chains on maintained roads, just the legal roads off of them. Usually there isnt any problems on maintained roads. The ones that aren't are nasty if you have chains or not. The roads I travel the rocks are rough as heck and probably basket ball sized. I don't think chains are going to make those roads any worse. I have shot 8 elk including a 330 bull all with mechanical's. One key to success other than shot placement is arrow weight. All mechanical s take a little more oomph to get those wide cutting blades through. I shoot a 475 grain total arrow eight for that reason. I like big holes on big animals like Elk. The bigger the animal the bigger the head. The holes my heads make are not gonna get covered up by tissue and stop the bleeding/blood trail. Dang some peoples eyes are way better than mine and I just got my eyes calibrated with a new pair of glasses last month. How in the world can you see the arrow impact at 120 yards? I know there is enough time in flight that the critter could take a step while the arrows on its way but there must also be enough time in flight to drop your bow and pull up the bino's too. LOL. Risky IMO. GBA
