New life to an old rifle

So last night I had some time to start messing w the trigger some more again.. it took a couple few hours anyway as I worked and reworked it. I had seen some info online about some modifications that can be made to make the trigger a little better and I wouldnt say they were far from exact and I had to change a couple things to make it work. I drilled and tapped the trigger housing and added 3 screws and another spring as well as stoned the surfaces a little more from what I had already done. I then ground a pocket in the trigger for the new spring too. The trigger now cleanly and consistently breaks at 1# w no over travel. Sure I could have bought a Timney for all the extra work but the projects bring better satisfaction and learning.

New life to an old rifle

Thanks for the kind words! Its been a quite a few hours changing its wardrobe but the more I shoot it the more I like it. So I had a few minutes yesterday morning and I took the rifle with me just to finish fire forming the other stuff I had loaded. I already knew it was close from last weekend. I found clay pigeons at 245 yards and started w those... hit them. Then I tried a small spot on a rock at 430 yards kept hitting that. And then I got crazy and tried to make it out to 1315 yards on a big rock face.. fired a couple times but just couldnt tell where I was hitting by myself. So I dropped back to 600 yards and same thing I kept hitting the rock, I will say w the 4# trigger it made it super hard at the longer diatances. At this point pretty happy though.

New life to an old rifle

So I hurried up and got the gun to a point where I could at least test shoot it since I was headed out of town last weekend and knew the plan was to do at least a little shooting while we were out. The targets are a couple of the fire form test loads. The top group even with the flyer was still jut barely over a half inch group. I didn't have any groups over one inch, I was pretty happy about that since I already had my doubts about the cheap barrel. I was curious about the barrel and that was part of the reason for going through with the build with the barrel. I still have some fire forming to do and then on to the real test loads with a few more grains of powder. At this point I think there is potential in this set up and am pretty happy so far. The other pic shows the loaded 6mm BR before fire forming next to the fire formed 6mm Dasher. and actually after review some thing the bottom group even though it says 4 shots... was actually 5 shots as well.
  7. I have had these for a few years now and they are in great condition (not enough tags)! They are a very bright glass as well. They have been used lightly with no problems whatsoever and if there ever was Vortex is super easy to deal with even not being the original owner. If you need some good glass to find some animals and not break the bank, here ya go. No trades at this time... need to fund some other toys/projects. $650 and they are yours. Shoot me a txt or call and leave a message. Todd 602-677-3791

    New Stock

Nice set up. right handed bolt isn't all bad when you are shooting prone.. you just cycle the bolt with the right hand and the left never leaves the trigger. There are many BR type rifles that are set up w left bolts for righties too.
  10. For one I wouldn't bother on a factor barrel for the extra coas and two... its probably close to about a #3 contour as it is, not enough meat there to flute. To give you an example Krieger won't flute a barrel on any contour less that a #5.5. Usually like a #2 or #1 contour barrel will get you less weight anyways than a fluted barrel if you are looking for light weight.
  11. Those are cool little guns, but to answer your question yes. A much lighter stock is a good start, McMillan has their Edge fill which is a lightweight filler for stocks and they can do just about any stock you want. McMillan makes nice stocks if you don't mind paying for them. The action and barrel would be your next weight concern, with the 18" you cut down some weight already, but I'm sure it is still a standard contour barrel and if you are wanting to cut weight you have to shave it everywhere so barrel contour is a place to look at weight and I have seen many of the lightweights that have skeletonized actions or at least shaved in non critical areas of the action and bolt. To get a smaller contour you are likely looking at a new barrel. Then to try and keep it around the 6.5 pounds you need a smaller lighter scope too. Most anything is possible just depends on what you are willing to pay for. Me personally I don't bother going down that road anymore, the lighter rifles I admit feel great packing but I sacrifice and carry the weight so that when I make my shot my heavier gun just sits there solid. In fact I have a great shooting gun that is supper heavy and last year I let one of my brothers barrow it and he said he would never barrow it again because it was way too heavy to pack around. Stiffness/rigidity is a good friend to repeatable accuracy of any gun which usually means more weight. and keeping around the 300 yards lke you mentioned with the light gun shouldn't be a problem where in long range weight is your friend High Tech Specialties makes a really light weight stock too... but they are a ton of work to get completed if you try to do it yourself. http://www.hightech-specialties.com/stocks.html Savage came out with their Lightweight Hunter and they say it is 5.5 pounds. I do have a friend that was stoked about the light gun and bought one.. tried to get it to shoot and it was nothing under an inch and i think it was closer to 2" most of the time which for him isn't acceptable (nor for me either). He ended up getting rid of it after he sent it back to Savage. This one may have just been a lemon, but for a complete rifle that is a super light ready to go they certainly cut the weight.

    What wildcat would you build?

Glad you enjoyed the shot, it was just a fun hunt! another wildcat I would like to build if i can get enough other projects done to start another one is a 219 Donalson Wasp... just because its different. It was kind of the godfather you might say to what started a long line of more bench rest type rounds, but perform equally well for hunting too with great accuracy.

    What wildcat would you build?

The 338 Tejas sounded way cool until my buddy had one and he kept buying brass because they would get stuck in the chamber... the case wall is way too straight. He got fed up with it and ended up buying a 338 Lapua reamer and we cut the Tejas chamber off and did the Lapua.. he is still working on loads but even with a couple test loads he is at a 1/2" with room to improve. 338 Edge is awesome I built mine last year and shot my elk with it at 1300 yards last year too w one shot. Right now I'm in the process of building another wildcat... I just cut most of the chamber a few minutes ago for my 6mm Dasher wanted one that would be way cheaper to shoot and still with a decent BC and besides nothing wrong with another gun or two.

  16. I doubt this saw has 10 hours on it... I bought it new and it has collected dust (not work dust either). I'm doing some horse trading and getting a less expensive one from my dad. This is a $1200 saw new and it is pretty close to new as it is. The model is the PWBS-14. Its got a 1-1/2HP motor run off 110. I figured I would try here first before going to craigslist and other places. This is a great saw and a great price! $800 for saw and the extra blades go with it too since the new saw is a different size. Texts are best, but if you call leave a message and I'll call back. Todd 602-677-3791 ...plus it comes with the dolly wheels too that had to be purchased separately which were made specifically for this saw.. makes it great to move around in a small shop!

    Browning 25 WSSM

Well I decided to try and sell this gun to put towards another project or two... I don't use this one as much since I built my Creedmoor but this has been the gun that many people have borrowed for young kids and wives. Since we put the muzzle brake on it, it is a dream to shoot and it shoots well. I did a class with this gun and even the instructor was impressed with it while we were shooting steel with it at 500 yards. The scope is already marked up to dial for the longer shots as well. I am selling as a complete package ready to go. If you don't want the scope I could the sell the gun without it, but I won't sell the scope first. There is close to 200 pieces of brass that has all of the prep work done already too. The Redding Dies go with it as well. Browning A Bolt; full length of action was rebedded (factory bedding was only the recoil lug) 25 WSSM (basically the same as a 25-06 but in a much smaller package) about 3150fps with 100 grain bullet Warne Rings and Bases Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 with capped turrets Winchester brass close to 200 pieces Muzzle brake Custom Camo $950 for everything text or call and leave a message Todd 602-677-3791

    Chronograph help

The Oehler 35 has always been the go to for good accurate data... they are a bit pricey though. The Magnetospeed has really come about in the last little bit too and really giving the Oehler a run for its money as far as accurate and reliable. The Oehler is the traditional set up with it 10 or so feet out in front. The Magneto is a different technology competely and straps to your gun barrel... with the technology no don't have to worry about overcast days and things like that. It will likely change point of impact though, but not your group sizes.

    Miller Tig Welder

Hey I have this tig welder that I only picked up about 2 months ago and I decided at the moment I would be better putting my money elsewhere and deal with getting another tig down the road. It seems to work well I just had the bottle filled too. We briefly tried it at my house and doing steel it worked great... aluminum didn't work as well since the outlet was tied to only a 30 amp breaker and it needed to be tied to a 50 amp breaker to keep it from popping. Great little machine for someone wanting to do some work in the garage. It came with a couple of extra tips too and a little bit of rod as well. $500 text or call and leave a message Todd 602-677-3791
