Nice job with the camera. It is tough to call and get good footage. I have been shooting some witht he camera this year also and it tis tough. Especially when you run the caller, camera, and gun. Keep up the good work.

Here are a couple recent critters I have been able to get close enough to shoot. I have been getting alot of animals to respond to the call but for the most part they are staying out of shotgun range. The desert coyotes have fur about as good as they will get down here. The fox was a bad shot on my part but I was able to track him down and get a couple pics before he was dispatched. He was a good size grey with a great coat.

Calling all GURU"S , seeking advice
josh replied to seek100plus's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
I really believe in mixing up your sounds. I use everything rabbit,bird,kitten,k-9 pups, rodent squeeks. I will run a sound sometimes continuosly for twenty minutes but most time I start run for 5 then pause switch sounds and repeat until something shows or I get bored with the stand. I do have my favorites but that just comes from time out calling and seeing what I have had the most success with. I will usually call for 12 minutes but when I am looking for cats in particular I will do 20 even 30 if I have good sign in the area. Although most of my cats come within the first 5 minutes. I use to worry about the wind alot but sometimes I want to call an area and the wind is bad so I just figure a good appraoch with a cross wind but if i just want cats and fox I will call without even caring about the wind. Coyotes are tough right now but using coyote vocalization may work better. Just get out and try some more and eventually they will come. -
Way to go Dude. That decoy dog thing has always been of interest to me. Do you ever read Tony Tebbe post about his dog Gunner? They take a lot of coyotes using that dog. He has some cool videos on youtube with the dog in action.

That is not a golf course but the way the desert is greening up you could probably play golf out there. The choke is a Carlson's Dead Coyote some times it is too tight like yesterday when I had a cat come up from behind and hold still at two paces from me I could have shot it but it would have blown up a $250 pelt so he got a pass.

Nice job. By the looks of the second pic you must be in the Foxpro contest. How are you stacking up next to Mr. Jim?

Well done and great shooting. I am a firm beliver that if you find a cat in an area there will be plenty more around there. Some guys think bobcats have such large territories but if a cat finds a good area with cover and food they will stay in that general are. That is some interesting looking country. Stay after them, Josh

Oh boy the great Sonoran Coyote Killer! I can't wait for next week buddy and to see the look on your face when you shoot your first bobcat. Just don't use that 257 weatherby

Wow great pics. Looks like a real bruiser!

You predator callers out there have been making me jealous so I had time for a stand this afternoon. After calling in two coyotes on this stand and letting them walk I got this bobcat. I called this stand for thirty minutes and decided to get my call and whirling woodpecker. As I was walking to them I saw this cat hunkered down in a bush. Shot it and it dropped. Grabbed my gear and went to get the cat only to find it gone. After looking around I heard it in the base of a tree. I had purposely aimed my shotgun a little back as to save the skull and in the process broke down it's back end. One more shot finished her. The bummer of this deal is that I had shut my video camera off and didn't get the cat on video.

Well done boys wish I was with looks like some awesome country to call in. The first cat is always the best. Now those cats will start showing up a little more often buddy. Casey that is a great looking grey. Real nice colors. -
Well done with the scatterguns. I think callin and shooting critters with a shotgun is the most exciting way to predator hunt. I agree with you on the choice of shells. I now only shoot #4 buck in three inch with a Carlson's dead coyote choke tube. Keep after them.

Got out a bit last week and mustered up a couple grey's that I just could not pass on. I called in a few more than this but have been passing on most of them lately.I have been targeting the cats for the most part, but couldn't get one to poke it's nose out until this morning. At the three minute mark this nice tom came into sight. This will make the first cat I have videoed and shot at the same time. It adds a whole new challenge to predator calling. In fact just trying to remeber everything now is a challenge. This morning I left without my camo jacket, but the flannel shirt worked just fine.

Brian you get the prettiest grey fox I see. Well done. Don't feel bad I missed a grey at less than twenty yards a couple weeks ago. When I miss with a shotgun it is almost always high. I get excited and don't get down on my bead. How has your bobcat action been this year?

This is the first coyote I have shot with oral papillamatosis. It was a real healthy coyote other than his mouth. About made me puke when I walked up and saw this. I had read about it in Gerry Blairs book about predator hunting.

Got out this a.m. for two stands. First set looked great, nice boulders and thick washes. Just what I like for cats, but no takers. Decided to walk further in and make another stand in the same area. This time I busted out my beat up Whirling Woodpecker. I have not used a decoy yet this season. At the five minute mark I am slowly panning and see this pretty guy sitting on a boulder looking at the noise from my Minaska M-1. He jumped off the rock and then catches the movement of the decoy. The cat locked on and never stopped moving towards the woodpecker until the Benelli Nova barked with some #4 buck. This cat has the prettiest coat of any bobcat I have ever shot. The spots and stripes down the back are beautiful.

Ha Ha well done Grasshopper! That's a whopper of a female. How did the rest of the day go?

Great story and beautiful buck for the young man!!

Tried doing a little calling before work a couple days this week and it went well. Started the week calling in a coyote quick into the stand and put it down. Then called in another and missed about two minutes later. Ended that stand calling in five coyotes and only took one. A couple days later went out with a buddy and hit some fox country. Before 1pm we called one coyote,a bobcat, and five fox. This is what we ended up with. Then this a.m.Set up at the base of a big canyon and within a minute of turning on my Minaka m-1 I had a grey come in and just watched him it was a young one so gave him a pass. As soon as I look back at the caller that is ten yds in front of me there is a nice size fox looking at me. It was cool just to watch it looking for the rabbit that was making noise. Let it walk also. Kept calling and a few minutes later this old male came in.

Hey thanks for the kind remarks folks. When I was walking back to the truck with this cat I knew it was special and kept thinking of the cat that I already have at the taxidermist. It is almost done, but now I might have to save up and get another full mount or at least a rug done. Ernesto, don't worry I feel confident about getting you a cat down at the ranch. I still want to see that bobcat that was eating all our dead coyotes POJV, that was a really cool link to those pics. Thanks. Amanda, I wouldn't mind sharing what little I know about calling these cats. It would be fun.

I went out yesterday and took out my own Arizona Wildcat

Havalon Knives - Check these out!
josh replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Store
The way I change the blade is to use the straight slot on my leatherman and put it at the back of the blade and wedge it up a little while pushing it forward. This usually frees it up enough to slide it the rest of the way with your fingers. I have skinned many critters with my Havalon and now find it a must have item in my pack along with an extra blade. I really like the blunt tip for skinning the faces of small critters like bobcats and grey's. -
Just wondering if anybody on here uses one of these to video hunts. I am just getting started in doing some video when hunting and this camera seems to be a good setup. Any feedback would be appreciated even if it is not with the GL2. Thanks Josh
