After 14 years of Unit 1 as a first choice finally drew the tag also. As far as the Rage Broadheads, saw them in action last year and was sick with their performance on angled shots and rib hits. Magnus Snuffer SS 100Gr out of my Reezen shooting 293fps. Shoot like darts to 40yds! That's all I need.

First time in 33, is there lots of traffic on the Redington rd? Looking at Davis mesa and Edgar canyon area. Don't have an atv, will hiking do from where I might be able to get to the furthest place on Fr 802? Any good suggestions?

What caliber do you use and why?
Vbraley replied to stalkincoues's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I shoot a 30 year old Winchester Model 70, Trigger set @ 3lbs, Bell and Carlson stock, Leuopold 4x9 scope, My buddy loads a 165 Accubond for me. Haven't used the 165's on Coues yet but took a few loaded with a 150 gr. Nosler ballistic tip. I am trying to get an "all-around" load because I would like to pass this gun on to my son, then purchase possibly a Kimber Montana or a Browning Rifle, I have been debating on the caliber, but either 7MM WSM or 300 WSM? -
Fire Burning in unit #32 ???
Vbraley replied to BACKCOUNTRY's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Where can I get the most reliable info on this fire? Thanks, V.B. -
Looks like YLE is no secret either, I was in there yesterday, finally found my way past the ranch and made it to YLE Tank. There were 2 camps set up near the end of the road which is right on the ridgeline just above the tank? Looks good, hopefully the confusion at the ranch will keep at least 50% of the road hunters looking for something else?

My son and I drew a Unit 32 W/T hunt. My problem is he plays football and if I'm lucky, because of school and football he might be able to hunt about 1 day and 1/2, opening weekend. We are familiar with the Bunker Hill/Mercer Rd and Copper creek rd, travel time is no factor as long as he can hunt all day sunday opening weekend. We aren't expecting anything big but for his first Coues rifle hunt I need to find and area with population so he may have some opportunities on something with horns. Mercer's roster is full so that leaves us going elsewhere. If you can help, thanks.

Haven't been there in years but Boss Ranch road just further NE from Douglas use to have a decent number of whities..........Are there access issues now?

I was reading thru the replys and I have no Idea where 1998 came from.?( must have been a typo?) My first experience with Big Lake and Unit 1 was back in 1990. I remember being able to call in Bulls with a Paper towel holder as a bugle and Huge Brook trout cast after cast with the fly rod. This is My Heaven, I have told my wife that my funeral WILL be held at the intersection of the FR 409 and the "little" road that veers south to the road that goes to Crescent and Big Lake. There has been no place on Earth that has impacted me, like this place, Unit 1................

what time will we be able to shoot till? Thanks, Vince B.

Found it on the map, I was just one canyon north of there scoutin' last year then my Grandfather passed away, we didn't get to hunt. My son and I had December tags. Anyway are there issues with access do you know? I am going to plan on going down there in the AM (9/28) and try to get to the foot of the Mtns. Thanks, Vince B. I was in there last year and didn't have any access problems. The road into the canyon is just north of the San Pedro...there was a sign in box there. Cool, I've been looking at my Topo program and I see where there are 2 ways to get there. Didn't make it this last weekend, but it definately has my curiousity up. thanks.......

I am pretty sure that in N.M. the horns CANNOT be attatched to a skull to be able to walk off with them.

I grew up in N.M. and it never crossed my feeble mind that Eastern AZ could ever be so beautiful! Through the years, moving, Military and parents divorcing, living as far away as the U.K and Fla I end up in Phx. My frist trip June 1st 1998 was Big Lake by way of Safford, Morenci, Hannagan's Meadow and Big Lake. the first night it snowed about 2" and my girlfriend , now my wife vowed never to come back because it was too cold. This is our, and my family's October destiantion every year since. I put in for Unit 1 every year for archery elk but with 10 years and no luck, had to change my options. My kids love this place and I have a corner set aside for my ashes to be spread when the time comes, so if you ever see a ghost "cruising" the FR 409 rd, I'm friendly.

Big bucks in 24b off the 650rd, you'll be suprised at how close to the road you'll find them, if you have "good glass"! Might even have to start a post on how many quads and utv's, and lost snowbirds screwd you're hunt. We've hauled them out, I've seen them. Good Luck!

Looks like my "Dream Bull" of My lifetime! Congrats......I'm nearly speechless. But it seems like the "Rightway" too me

New to this forum, I've visited the website many times, I think this is the most valuable source of Coues deer info available...... Hat's Off to You! My question is this, I know 2006 is probably a pipe dream to get a tag on the San Carlos for Coues. I am thinking and saving some money hopefully with a chance at a tag in 2007. I've hunted unit "A" for pigs and Unit "C" for pigs so I have a pretty good idea of how the units are laid out. If money was no object based on The San Carlos prices for a tag, what UNIT, and what Hunt dates would you choose and why?
-
Thanks guys for your input. just got a reply from the Game and Fish/Rec department and 2006 schedule and tag allotment is still in work. Could possibly be a 2006 hunt. probably most familiar with Unit "A", plus closer than the others to home for possible day trips if needed for scouting. Thanks again.
