He was asking about the archery hunts in those units. With 16 points, he will draw either tag.

I was hoping to get some input from the good folks here on the forum. As many, I am debating my choices for the upcoming draw hunts. I am seriously considering as a second choice putting in for the 27 late rifle hunt. Im not guaranteed a tag but should have at least a pretty decent shot at drawing. I havent been in the unit since the fire, so I was hoping for some opinions from folks who have been in the unit late in the year. I understand some of the disadvantages of the late hunt... but still have a few questions. Are the bulls now hanging out in the burn during the late season? 500 tage seems like a lot, but its a big unit, how is the hunting pressure during this season? Are most of the elk migrating into the wildernes areas? Would it be doable without horses, guide? (I would have help to pack one out). Just overall opinions on the hunt in general. I would love to talk with a couple that have hunted this hunt in the past. Thanks.

I appreciate the comments from everyone. Decisions to make for sure. Maybe I will just make my brother draw the tag so I can learn the area better Or I could just apply with Jeff on the archery tag... he seems to be good at drawing that tag

B&C is what i call big...i think that's 190 net. That's what i want. I like the idea of colorado....problem is i'm here and it's there. The probability of me pulling diy booner out of another state are slimmer for purely logistical reasons. ( i don't have time and money to trot off to colorado ever fall to locate big bucks). But I can probly pull it off in my home state. If i get rich soon, i'll look at colorado for sure! 190 net huh. OK, most people even on the strip dont shoot deer that big, but it can be done. Building points in Colorado doesnt cost much... After 2 or 3 years you can draw a decent 3rd season tag. You could do that hunt 3-4 times before you draw a "great" tag in AZ. Average units in CO produce MUCH better quality/quantity of deer than AZ, just saying... If your set on a 190 net class buck, I agree with some of the others. Spend lots of time between Christmas and the first 3 weeks in January with your bow. Hunt the border if you dare. The biggest bucks I have seen in AZ have been within a mile or so of the border. Good luck.

What do you consider big? Start building points in Colorado.

Practice shooting off your butt... If light is fading, got to move faster of course. Dont waste opportunities (unless your in the high country of Colorado in August, then maybe back out and wait for a better spot).
-
Go slower. When you think you are going to slow, slow down even more. Watch your shadow. Once you get close (could be 200 yards in open country) get on your butt, with your feet in front of you. You can lay your bow across your lap. Lean back so you are low to the ground. Use your elbows to inch forward. You can keep your head looking forward, so you when you move. This process can take an hour or 2 to move the last 50-100 yards, but you can usually get within range.

The answer to your question is no... the odds dont change what-so-ever by the order you list applicants. That said, dont apply with your friend on the same app. Your odds go way down. Apply seperately, and if one of you happens to draw a tag, you can both enjoy the hunt. You need help packing out an elk anyway.
-
How many points do you have? Fact is, if you want an early archery elk tag in AZ, they are high demand. There are no easy to draw tags with the units you mentioned. If you are set on drawing an elk tag this year, look into some of the late archery elk tags.
-
Im confused with what you are asking here... You say " Im pretty set on 6b as a second choice" then... You want opinions on a different second choice?
-
No. 6A is the tougher to draw tag, so you should put it as your first choice. The draw process will look at your first 2 choices when your number is drawn. They will look at your first choice, and if there are tags available, give you a tag. If no tags available, then they will look at your second choice. Again, if a tag is available for that choice, you get a tag. They look at everybody's first two choices before looking at anyone's 3rd, 4th, and 5th choices. So, you ALWAYS put in the harder to draw tag as your first choice.
-
Your first 2 choices will get looked at when they draw your number. So, you can apply for a trophy rut hunt first choice, and a much easier to draw tag second choice. As a resident, anybody can draw any tag. Your first 2 choices will get looked at when they draw your number. Lots of different options. If you just want to go hunt, a late archery tag is a great option.

Any unit can produce a 300 class bull. If you are a resident, anyone can draw any tag. If you are a NR, there are plenty of good tags that you can have a chance for in the random draw.

Awesome. Nice job.

75-80% of the deer will be on the north. Less deer on the south side, but bigger bucks.

Good job.
