Hi all, I need a little advice here. Taking pictures though binos or spotting scopes is fun, but I am terrible at it and I see ones that others do all the time that look great. I think having a good adapter makes a huge difference. I recently bought the Swaro SLC 15's and it came with the snapshot adapter, but I can't seem to use it with my camera. I got better pictures by just putting the camera up to the lens of the binos. Check out my post in Rifle hunting for coues deer titled "bucks right now". I took that picture at 600 yards and about 20 others that were way worse. I think that I should be able to get a much more clear picture than that at that distance through the binos or my spotter. I had a big plastic cabelas camera adapter that took about 10 minutes to setup for a picture with and it finally broke, but was also huge and obnoxious so I don't really want to go that route again. My little camera is about shot so I may look into getting a newer one. Any advice on one that will work with the swaro snapshot adapter and has a very fast exposure time or whatever. I have no desire to carry around a huge camera adapter, just would like to occasionally take a picture through my optics. What is the easiest way to do this? (also I don't do smart phones, but have had friends put their I-phone up to my scope and take a better picture through it than I can with my camera)...so maybe I just need a better camera or better setting, but I don't do technology well.

The picture was taken during the Javelina rifle season. He was with 2 other bucks so I am certain there was no rut activity still going on. And my question is still mostly meant as a hypothetical as I don't actually expect to ever see this guy again. Really?...only 80?...I though for sure this would be over 90. Well good thing actual inches don't matter. I guess I do need to post my story cause everytime I post someone asks about the avatar. Honestly this is exactly what I am after (buck in the original post). It is a nice representative of the species and I really need a nice normal typical for the wall to see what a coues is supposed to look like, because what I have now is, well, insane. The story is lame. I was stubborn and sat on a hillside for six days watching does everywhere. I knew coues were supposed to be difficult to find and I was seeing does, so I figured that if I sat there long enough a buck would show up (good chance it might take several hundred days though). I had spent 4 years in Nebraska hunting whitetails on 30 acres and I would hunt September through January (but I couldn't hunt the rifle season during the rut). There were many good bucks in the area and I would really only get one opportunity at a mature buck a year...and I am only talking about 2.5 or 3.5 year old bucks. So I was convinced that with the amount of does I was seeing there had to be bucks there and we just needed to sit and wait for them to make a mistake. Well most of the country we were watching was out of rifle range, but as luck would have it these two boys walk out in broad daylight in the middle of the day and came right to us...250 yards to be exact. I shot mine and the other buck ran about 20 yards and looked back and my dad shot him. This was of course a dream come true and my first coues deer so I am now ruined. But perhaps not, because I still get excited to see a buck like the one in my first post! I feel like I am pretty good at finding deer, just not bucks

Hi all, I just completed a javelina hunt in a random southern unit that I know I can get leftover tags for coues annually. I am terrible at field judging, but I did spot this buck and he definitely fits my definition of a "shooter." What do you guys think? Next question: Can I expect to find him in the same general area next fall. I have always thought they don't range very far and I don't mean to ask if I should only look on this one hillside. I mean will he be at the same altitude (or 1000 or 2000 feet higher etc.) I have never made the time to do any real scouting in summer months and always wondered if what you see in the summer months correlates to where the bucks will be in the hunting season, so I guess that question goes hand in hand with the previous one. I have such a hard time finding bucks during the season that I always assumed there would be no way I would ever find one in the heat of the summer. I did see quite a few bucks during this javelina hunt though so maybe AZ is just that much better than NM! ...or maybe its just the old game where I always see what I am not after. Danny

Good, thanks guys that makes me feel better...and worse for not figuring that out on my own!

How do you know where I shot my deer?
-
I have a bunch of 284 win ammo and brass. I have reloaded a bunch for it. I just recently decided to come back to the 120g TSX. I have shot 140 accubonds and 168 bergers and all shot well, but I'm going back to the 120 TSX that will fit my magazine and match my reticle. I am using H4350 with this bullet, and it's a stout load in an HS Precision bolt gun. I do have 6 or 8 boxes of loaded ammo that I bought from some company in Wisconsin? I think, about ten years ago. If I remember correctly its loaded with 140 g cor-lokts. It was slow and not very sexy I guess, cause I never ended up shooting much of it. I would be happy to sell it to you cheap if you are interested. I think I might have some unopened bags of brass too. I don't remember brass being difficult to get. great cartridge! I also have a model 88 but it's perfect so I am afraid to shoot it.

I would not recommend it. I just bought the 15X Swarovskis and they came with the tripod adapter. It does not lock up solidly. There is a constant rocking at the joint between the stud and the adapter. I have heard the outdoorsmans is better, but I do know you would be better off with a cheap metal screw in adapter.

Thanks for the info guys! Still don't know what to do though. I was playing with my new Swarovski 15X56 SLC's (old model) looking for javelina here in NM and they were fun, but man that swaro bino adapter has a lot of play in it. I am glad I didn't pay for that individually. Is the outdoorsman's one better or should I just get a cheap screw in one that I know will work. I was planning on getting the manfrotto 700 RC2 head because I really like how my swaro spotter and these binos fit into it without the need for any adapter plate, but after using these binos with the supplied swaro one, I will have to rethink that.

Hi all. I know its been asked a 1000 times, but... which tripod should I get? I really wish I could play with all 3, but the only way to do that is to buy them and return 2. I have the big heavy manfrotto and love it, but its huge and heavy (7.25 lbs) so now I want something light and packabe. I think I am ok with one that does not extend tall enough to stand and glass, but I do see the advantage in that too. I am looking at: The promaster on this site The outdoorsmans medium Or the slik 624 or 634 I will use it 95% of the time straddling me as I sit and glass with binos and spotter. The slik looks neat in that it is very small, but its gotta be the least rigid with all those legs. I assume the outdoorsmans is the strongest and most rigid with only 2 legs. Seems to me like the promaster is going to be in-between these to, but is also the only one that is tall enough to glass standing. Light and packabe is great, but it needs to be steady too. Anyone know if there is much difference in stability between these when setup for sitting and glassing?

Haha, ya and I have always liked the idea of hunting them with an AR and even have 5 round mags for them, but it always ends up being pretty clumsy to carry those around all day
-
Thanks guys. I was just worried about carrying something that could hold more rounds than legal. Glad you guys got rid of that regulation. I will post some pics of my deer and story at some point. I'm out of town and using my wife's phone to post...nightmare! I will admit now that it doesn't actually have 4 main beams though. What appears to be the second set comes off the brow tines. Very unique freak...and my first coues so I am ruined, and my dad shot the 107" running with him. Not going to ever best that day! Anyone have any do or do not do advice for 36C? I really want to find my brother a pig cause he has never even seen one, although I will admit now that I will be mostly looking for deer while glassing...just can't help it.

I know that I have researched this before, but want to clarify again since I am not from AZ and don't hunt there as much as I would like. I know you can't hunt with detachable mags in excess of 5 rounds, but can you use a firearm that hold more than 5 in say a tube mag. I am going to be hunting javelina and was thinking of taking my wincherster model 94 in 44 mag, but it holds six or seven in the tube mag. Also, we drew our 3rd choice (for a leftover tag) and will be hunting 36C. Sounds like a decent unit to hunt but perhaps not the easiest to access. If anyone has any advice for me on how to navigate it or where to locate some javi's, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Danny

So you can use electronic calls for javelin in AZ? I know, dumb question based on what's already been said in this topic, but I had to ask just to make sure.

4mainbeam replied to ScottAdams's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Wow, that was a great story and a truly amazing deer. If you ever want to take someone out to cull one of those "little" ones, feel free to let me know! -
The units that still have leftover tags are: 19B, 29, 30A, 30B, 31, 34A, 35B, 36A, 36B, 36C
