NM treated me good again. 23 rifle coues for me and my son. Brothers drew Stallion Oryx, Mcgregor Elk, Lope and Barbary. Should be a fun year in NM. Now I just need my home state Utah to come through! -
Great buck! Congrats

The base is actually just one I stole from my dad for the pics. Need to build one for my desk at work. I did find a nice little pocket of deer that we hunted. It was tough country and we hiked 38.4 miles over 4 days. Mostly in the dark, getting to our glassing point and coming out in the dark at night. A great adventure with my son, he pushes me pretty hard! Lol

My son and I drew Unit 23 in NM with year. We have hunted unit 27 in the past but the last couple trips have just been too sketchy with drug runners. Just curious what the horn growth and numbers are looking like on 23 this year. We aren't afraid to lay down the boot leather and spend hrs glassing. Thanks for any input and good look to all those hitting the hills!

Thanks for the input. Not a giant but a fun hunt with my son and my second coues buck. I'm definitely addicted to these little deer!

Well I just returned from my first Coues hunt. Spent a week in New Mexico and had a wonder time. Met some great people and enjoyed a week with my little brother. Here are a few pics from the week. Sunrise opening morning I love old dead trees 9 hours of spotting from this comfy spot I was even able to spot a few on my own...VERY FEW!!!! Note to self...Next time bring climbing gear. Pic of my shooting perch Approaching my first Coues buck....I'll be honest and say I was still shaking a little. 4 miles back to the truck Cant complain about how the night ended! Unbelievable way to end an incredible hunt! Thank you to all that helped me realize a dream. Have dreamed of shooting a Coues deer for over 20 years. I could not have asked for a better experience......I"LL BE BACK AGAIN...SOON!!!!

I have enjoyed reading this site for sometime and finally decided to get an account. I have wanted to hunt Coues deer for many years now and finally applied for Unit 27 in NM this week. Just looking for any advice on Unit 27 and in Coues deer hunting in general. I'll keep my fingers crossed that I actually pull a tag this year and hopefully start and addiction!

Well it looks like I am going on my first Coues hunt. Cant believe I actually drew on my first try. Super excited to see a new area and hunt a new species!
-
Thanks gents! Shot my ram at 560 yards.

Hoping to draw Unit 27 this year for Coues. Was able to get this ram in NM this past Feb. I think I am going to start blocking out more of my fall for NM....I hope. I

Well looks like my NM luck is holding strong. Unit 27 in Nov I'm super excited for my first Coues deer hunt!!!

Great ram. Thanks for posting up the pics.

He was just over 26", bases were 11.5. Not a monster but I was pretty happy with him for public land.

What are you gunna get this year?
Muley73 replied to deserthntr's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Just won a 25-06 at a banquet so looks like a new scope this year. Probably a 6.5X20 Vortex Viper. -
I sure will. Thanks! Jordan said you guys had a great time last year. I was sure glad we did not have to deal with the same weather this year. He said your hunt was brutal!
-
Chef, Yes Jordan is my brother. It was actually my other younger brother that you hunted in NM with last year. There are three of us. I actually went down this year with them this year and was able to shoot a real nice ram about a half mile from where you shot yours last year. It was a great time I'm starting to get addicted to NM!

Thanks for the info guys. I currently am using 10X42 Cabelas Euros, 15X56 Minox and a Vortex 20-60 spotter. I spend a lot of time behind the glasses hunting mule deer and elk so I at least have a foundation to build on. My brother actually guided on the Kaibab for Duane for 3 years and that is what got him intrested in Coues deer. He was able to harvest a 90 inch buck year before last and has been relentless on getting me to also put in. I am hoping that between the two of us we can draw tags and I can see what it is all about first hand.
