I think with reliance on technology the ability to hunt is slowly being lost. I use whatever is out there but i feel without my rangefinder i am lost. I am thinking about ditching it for archery hunting all together. I would rather just "know" how far the animal is and be able to shoot rather than fumble around with my rangefinder, range it, get my bow ready, etc, all the whIle losing precious moments icould have already shot out of confidence. You see what i am saying? With rifle hunting, i like the handiness of a rangefinder also, but dont need it. It helps on those long shots but truth be told one can learn to judge distances without it and most hunters can get within 300 yds of a deer pretty easily if needs be. Point is technology is actually a handicap and takes away from the basics of hunting. If your rangefinder breaks on a hunt can you still hunt out of experience or would you cancel your hunt and go buy a new one? Can you use iron sights out to 500 yds with confidence? Find deer without thermal imaging? I am going back to the older style of hunting just so i do not forget how. I will still keep my cool gadgets for certain occasions but think it is important to remember how to actually hunt. And no i am not going back to just stick and string but to the days of youth when i learned to hunt without all these gadgets. I realized the importance of this after the last week of archery hunting.

I chased my elk for 3 miles in that unit before i shot him. I was running for almost the whole three miles chasing his bugles. It was tough. Finally got him to turn around by bugling loud and nasty then raking a big branch against a tree. That got him mad at me. Literally he was looking to come tear me apart when i shot him at 30 yds. I had no luck at all cow calling. Seemed that sent them running in the other direction. Just something to think about.

Yeah lion/bear hunters get mad when you find their dog and baby it. I never call when i see a random hound. Just let it be.

I will pm you. Yes if you put in for 1 and 2 choices and get your second choice you still get a bonus point. You only lose your bonus point if you draw your first choice.

+1...skin it quarter it and pack it out right there. I used to wonder when i was young how all these trucks would have whole bull elk in the bed. Not even gutted or skinned or anything. Then they would be driving it around town showing off. I used to think two things....1, did they shoot it on the road?....2, arent they worried it is going to spoil? Didnt even know you could drive in to retrieve game, dad made me quarter it and pack it out.

good thing you got video of it! Very Cool. I sat down on a log after a long hike a few years back and looked over and a fox was laying under the log also. He got up and started to leave after he saw me but then just came back and layed right down again. not more than 5 feet away. We just sat there resting together til I got up to continue my hike. I think it is cool when encounters like this happen. Unfortunately for that turkey I think it was indeed its last day on earth.

Remington Sendero, 6-20x44 vortex viper, 162 gn hornady SST at 3050 fps. Max effective range of the round is just over 1000 yds (1700 fps and 1060 ft lbs). I like to keep shots at or under 600.

Its much better to read about a DIY hunt! Bored to death of reading about guided hunts. Good job publishing unguided hunts. Keep it up!

New pair of boots wanted for low desert hot hunting
AverageJoe replied to stalkincoues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Asolo fsn95. They have been great for me. Not sure if you like hiking boots or heavy duty backpacking boots but these have served me well all around. Waterproof lightweight and made in romania. They run narrow. http://m.sierratradingpost.com/mobile/asolo-fsn-95-gore-tex-hiking-boots-waterproof-for-men~p~72552/ Sign up for their mailing list and you can get them cheaper. Worth lookin at. -

Any gun modified to shoot in the open class is capable of shooting just as fast. Nothing about a 1911 makes it any better than other guns. If anything they are less reliable from the factory than most guns. Polish and port the feed ramp and they are great.

AverageJoe replied to rossislider's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
Looks like you are right on if you use an archery calculator like this one http://www.stickemarchery.com/stickemcart/archery-calculators.aspx I found the calculators are usually a bit high. Says you should be at 274.
