Without going into to too much crazy detail- My dad, Uncle and I were lucky enough to all draw together this year. Scouted hard for months and decided that although it would cause us great amounts of pain, there were some good bucks in this particular canyoun and it would be worth the hump in. Opening morning at 4:30am we dove off into the abyss in search of two bucks we had spied 2 weeks prior. Just as the sun was lighting the eastern sky we arrive at our destination, split up and went to glassing- I got settled in, spun the 15's to the first edge of the grid and not 5 minutes in I caught a flicker in the mesquite. turned out to be an ear and the antlers quickly materialized. a quick range, 471- just a touch out of my comfort zone so I went to closing the gap. I rounded the corner and saw my old man glassing the same hill side- walked up to him and asked "are you shoot that thing or is he not big enough for you?" he looked at me like I had 3 heads. "Where?" he asked. I trained his binoculars on the spot and let him stare at it for a few minutes before the buck finally flinched again. Wanting him to take a good buck was my main mission on this hunt so we found him a good solid rest and were planning on waiting for the buck to stand, right up until the rest of the bucks we didn't see started coming out of the bottom to feed. Another good buck strolled onto the playing field and pops decided that one was good enough and closer to boot. I told him that if he gave me a second to set up, I'd scope the bedded buck and hopefully his shot would get him up- worked like a charm. His buck folds and the bedded buck stands up, only he was still in the danged ol' tree. The perch dad had was at a better angle so I low ran back to where he was, kicked him off the rock, squared up and center punched the other. Hmm, two down within 50 yards of each other. turns out there was 6 bucks in that little mess and the remaining four were in no hurry to go anywhere. Dad told me to run back and see if Mike wanted any deer or if he was looking for something giant. I ran the 200yards back around the mountain- rousted up my uncle and told him that if he would shoot any buck there was a good forky standing around just waiting to get thumped. Back to the shooting rock again and the bigger of the 2x was still eating along like he had good sense. 316yrds, hold, breathe, squeeze, down....over......it was all of 7:30 a.m. and we were done.... well, almost......cut, quarter, cape, strap on the packs and up the hill we went arriving at camp around 5pm.....that hurt me bad but I wouldn't trade if for the world. to see my old man as excited as he was, was worth every grueling step....... My baby one- 90" even Old man's stud buck with a little character- 85ish Hawk's battle tested deuce Mess-o-horn Success!

8 Hours Community Service
redline410 replied to Non-Typical Solutions's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
ARS 17-309 "4. Discharge a firearm while taking wildlife within one-fourth mile of an occupied farmhouse or other residence, cabin, lodge or building without permission of the owner or resident." I guess if you miss, you're free to go...... -
8 Hours Community Service
redline410 replied to Non-Typical Solutions's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Has nothing to do with money! I've posted this on another site so if you've seen it already, sorry. I hate defending stupidity BUT regardless of what anyone thinks, it was an iffy at best class 2 misdemeanor- which is punishable by a MAXIMUM of a $750 fine and four months in jail. Without seeing the court documents I can only assume that since it was a first time offense, the community service is in conjunction with a little probation for Mr. Malik. Just like every other wing nut that crossed the same line- no special treatment, no quid pro quo. He got what was coming to him. Infact, by holding him to community service, it's a far worse penalty than the max fine because he does have money! which leads me to believe that the judge was no dummy and inflicted the harshed punishment he could think of within the bounds of the law while not setting a ridiculous precedence for future cases of this violation...... Discharging a firearm too close to occupied buildings is one of the most common G&F violations. By what grounds is G&F looking to prosecute further? If this had been say a 300" bull would it get the same public whining? If by some miracle G&F finds a way to carry this further- be afraid, be very afraid. -
The body glide and shoes advice is something I got AFTER the fact! Take it to heart, it's no joke....... Good luck.....

Scottyboy, you'll do fine- Just know that although cardio is important its not nearly as important as your tolerence for pain. Lost the nails off both my big toes, chafed and blistered in places I can't bare to talk about and found out that power gel without water creates a nice little seal in the back of your throat that will cut off you air supply......Ah, good times. I did get a free beer from the sponsors when I finshed so that was cool.......... Good luck brother- Its a helluva feat........

That's a pretty handy bit of information to have right there

Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot....Over?!?!? Doug, youg can't use terms like "compare their coefficients of thermal expansion" on a public forum. Are you crazy?!?! Keep us posted Seek- Smakin' any part of loaded $1400 firearm with a hammer is no buenoski...... -
Lesson #1: Unless you're physically there and see it with your own eyes- odds are, you don't know Jack as being fact. Nothing like making accusations on heresay and rumor........I'm pretty sure MSNBC is looking for reporters with that very skillset.

Fantastic bull and great story Jim- Thanks for taking us along on yet another hunt.....Well done boys.... Dave

CC3, A few years back my old man and uncle had tags in 22. Opening morning my dad and I sat a canyon rim while my uncle and cousin wandered off elsewhere. He shot a decent buck across that canyon and after the better part 3hours just going over there to get him (not so much because of horizontal distance but vertical), we decided to gut and bone him right where he lay. Next morning, we sit the same spot with my uncle- and he taps a buck off that wall. We took the same route to get that one and walked right past the remains from the previous morning. That second buck went down less than 30 yards from the first one. I don't think the gore affected him too much.......Again though, Neck makes a pretty good point. Might want to whack one before worrying too much about what it'll do to another.........Good luck this weekend smoothe- hope it works out for ya......

Cowards Strike Again!!

This camera jacking game gets worse every year. Eventually one of these a-holes is going to come face to face with the camera owner in the hills and its going to get ugly. Sorry to hear it broski- Karma is a great equalizer, they'll get theirs someday......... -
Best treestand shooting advice I ever got was "Aim at the exit hole". It essentially means aim low but my pea brain never could quite grasp the "how low" until I implemented that little suggestion.
-
Great pictures Doug!! That dude is a slob- head gear all in disarray, groceries hanging out of his mouth, big ol' boiler stick'n out there for the world to see. looks like Nick Nolte's mug shot.........
-
Great antlers but I gotta say- If its a whitetail, its eastern....... If it's truley from AZ, its a Muley.......not that my opinion matters much I guess, just sayin' is all........

Amanda, Did you get the low down on what caused such a dismal fawn survival rate last year?? I've spent many a year hunting around that enclosure and last Dec/Jan was the worst year I've seen as far as total number of deer. Not a ton of Wile E. Coyotes running around up there but there are a few lions in the general area who have managed to avoid a fatal case of lead, er copper poisoning so I'm just curious how much affect they are having on the populous. After a few miles of hiking and hours behind the glass I finally found the buck I'd scouted prior to archery season yesterday. We watched him long enough to put him to bed for the afternoon and as I started to descend the mountain side in an attempt to get within archery distance of him, this little fella cut me off.....He's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he was kinda cool to look at. Heavy horned bugger for a little guy......at 43 yards, its the first time in my life I've ever past up a chance to sing an arrow....I must be getting old...... Dave

I had a couple of straggling ATL's from this past season that I hadn't shared..... Not quite as big as Grong's but I chalk it up to genetics........
