I would also go either 280Ai or 30-06Ai. A few years ago I rechambered my old 30-06 to the Ackley version. I've been impressed with the results. A 180gr Swift Scirocco @ 3000 fps and I'm working on a load for the 200gr ELD-X @ 2850 fps.

My brother had that happen to his m77 hunting caribou. At -55° it wouldn't even click.
-
I've had it happen on several brands of factory ammo and with both federal and CCI primers on reloads.

What is the farthest you have tracked an animal?
dse replied to AzDiamondHeat's topic in The Campfire
I went a little over 5 miles one time helping a friend. Took around 7 hrs but recovered the elk. Lost the tracks once in a place where cows had trampled over the trail. Got back on track by checking under cedar trees and finally found one with a bed and fresh blood. -
Resizing brass from .284 to .308 safe?
dse replied to AZbowhntr's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Yes it's safe but will cause the case neck to be slightly thinner and will shorten case life. You will probably want to anneal the cases after resizing. -
I took two rifles to camp this year. My normal coues rifle is a 270 Wsm loaded with 130gr Swift Scirocco's @ 3475 fps. This rifle load combo has been lights out on several coues from 312yds to 684yds and a 653yd lion. I haven't had one animal take a step after the shot. The other rifle I took was a fast twist 22-250Ai loaded with the 80gr Berger vld @ 3450 fps. I had taken this rifle with the thought of doing some Coyote calling, but when my brother's 6.5-300 why took a crap I ended up loaning it to him for a back up. This may be my new favorite coues gun. His buck was 566 yds and hit the ground where he stood. After the shot my brother looked at me and said (that was awesome I watched the bullet hit him in the scope). I will definitely start carrying this rifle when hunting alone so I can be my own spotter.

Levi Strauss has been anti gun for a long time, but what do you expect from a company founded in San Francisco.

I use the Harris 25c. The shorter ones work better off the bench but when when trying to set up on angles with grass sticks and rocks in the way the extra height helps a ton.
-
Use those cuts to stay hidden on the way into your stand. Try to set up so they have to cross shootable ground between where you expect them to come from to down wind of your position. No talking! Don't call to loud start low and work up. Don't call to often I only let the call run for 20 to 30 sec every few minutes.

I have one I will be loading the 130 Scirocco for in the next few days just haven't had time yet. I will probably start with rl-25 or rl-33.

what to do when an angry bear approaches?
dse replied to portas.d.ace's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
I stood off a giant coastal brown in western Alaska. Luckily he didn't come all the way, stopped at about 50 yds, blew some snot and tore up the bushes. It was impressive for sure but a 375 H&H shouldered and ready to go made it alot more comfortable. -

You better be in shape! -
Perfect! Maybe they will pay to extend the wall.

I have the same hunt. Can't wait for some southern Az whitetail action!
-
Is that Latin for ( anybody can have a bad century)?
-
Screw this. I might never step foot in the hills again if this happened to me. Freaks me out just reading something like this. I have a late tag in the Southern units and I hope I dont see one.. Hate them ! Almost sat on one in 35b last year on Nov 30th. It was fairly chilly they were out that late at 5500 ft.

Game Processor / Cooler near Patagonia or Sonoita???
dse replied to PowellSixO's topic in The Campfire
It's getting into the 40s at night and low 70s during the day according to my weather app. Get a couple cheap sleeping bags hang it at night in a game bag then double wrap the sleeping bags and keep in complete shade throughout the day and it will be fine, so long as you keep the fly's away from it and keep it completely dry. I've had that hunt the last 5 years and have kept deer up to six days this way with no problems. -
I've only messed with the 200 gr & 212 gr from a 300 rum, but I've done pretty well with a .005 jump. I've gotten both down to 1/2 moa. I've found that you need a A-Max stem for the seating die to keep from deforming the bullet, and to get consistent seating depth.

I think most everyone could be capable of shooting 1000 yards if they put as much time and money into it as they do their Tv. I also think I've seen 10 times the animals missed or wounded inside 150 yds by the cowboys that think you have to shoot off hand because John Wayne did it that way, as I have beyond 500 yds.

When the government is involved yes! If they were honest they would have honest jobs.

It's wicked flat! Only put factory weatherby ammo through it so far. Only topping my 270 Wsm by 25fps 3475 to 3500 both with 130gr Swift Scirocco's, but dialing 5 1/4 moa @ 650 yds with the weatherby and 11 with the 270 Wsm.

Thinking about building another rifle. I want a prairie dog rig that will be good to 6 to 700 yds. I want this to be the most accurate rifle I own, a true one hole rifle. I'm also looking for little to no recoil, excellent barrel life, and mild muzzle blast. I've got a good idea on most of the components I'm going to use, but I don't know anything about aftermarket actions. So far I'm looking at the Defiance Deviant Tactical, but all i know is what I read on their site. Anyone with any experience with this action? The caliber I'm not completely dead set on yet but the two I'm looking at are the 222 rem, or the 22 PPC USA. On the barrel I'm thinking a 26" Krieger 8 twist in a REM varmint contour. The stock will either be a Manners MCS T4A or a McMillan A5. I'll finish it up with a Timney trigger a Swaroviski Z6 5-30 and an Atlas bipod. Any advice would be appreciated on the action & stock.

Neither would be my first choice, but if they were what I had I wouldn't hesitate for a second with either. I would worry about bullet choice more than caliber. In the 270 130gr Swift Scirocco would be my first choice. My sister in law tipped over a cow last week with the Swift fired from a 270 Wsm @ 400 yds. Didn't exit but you could feel the bullet under the skin on the off side. Other choices would be Barnes 129 lrx, and Nosler 140 gr Accubond. In the 308 same bullets just 165's.
