    Hunting mistakes and misses

First hunt with my new progressive lenses. Fell down 3 times opening morning. Drove to my chiropracter opening afternoon. Finally figured out that the rocks weren't where my eyes were telling me they were. EBB

    PROP 109

I spent the morning in front of the Cave Creek polls. There were several people I had to explain it to. One guy asked me where the Sierra Club stood on it and I told him them they were against it. He then changed his ballot to a yes. In retrospect we all should have been outside the 75 feet at our respective polling places (sans Camo and sidearms) trying to educate the voters. I am very sad to see popular votes still being able to manage Arizona's wildlife. EBB

As State Employees the Game and Fish Department are precluded (By Law) from having any participation in an election. It would be illegal for the Dept to issue any opinion officially. That is why the Commission came out in favor. They are not employees of the Dept. EBB

Just look who is for it and who is against it. Jerry Weiers is the main guy in the legislature who brought this to us. He is a lifelong hunter and has done more for our causes than anyone else I know in the Legislature. There is more comment on this in another thread here. It's a good read. Basically if the Sierra Club is against it we have to be for it! EBB Here is Representative Weiers Bio. He is for us! We need more just like him. Wanted: Left handed rifle

Being a lefty who could only afford right handed rifles, you might want to check the kids dominant eye before they go changing him. You end up shooting a rifle right handed and a shotgun left. Creates some confusion in jump shooting situations. I live with that. EBB

    Fiberglass repair - tent trailer

Fiberglass repair isn't really all that hard. Years ago I made livewells for my boat with fiberglass. You can buy either mesh or chopped cloth. Get the resin and catalyst, a cheap paint brush, and acetone for cleanup. with something like you describe you'll probably want to back up the hole with cardboard first and then do the fiberglass work otherwise slumping will be a major issue. It's not that difficult but it sure do stink! EBB

    Building on a Mauser Action

Lark, The action was a 98. I know the 91 was 7.65 Argentine and that action has the military cocking where it cocks going forward like the 6.5 X 55 Swedes. There was a note about an armory rebarrelling them to 30-06 in 1954 that was with the rifle (maybe in Israel). I do have one with a stepped 308 which is an Israeli barrel. Perhaps they rechambered some of the 308 barrels to shoot 06's in Israel. When I first got the rifle it shot pretty good but over time that changed. One thing for sure though, I'll never regret making it a 270! EBB

    Building on a Mauser Action

I once bought a 98 Mauser that had been converted to 30-06. Had a stepped barrel (military style) first shot was always good but after that it was anyones guess. Put a Fajen Black Walnut stock on it, glass bedded the action and floated the barrel. Same thing, first shot good, after that 2nd could be 4" any direction. Changed the firing pin spring and put in a Timney trigger. Same thing. Took it to a Gunsmith and had it rebarrelled to 270. It shoots 5/8 inch 3 shot groups consistently now. I also have a 308 I built on a 98 and bought an Israeli surplus (in the white) barrel. Installed that one myself. Put in a Timney and put it in a synthetic stock. It shoots the same 5/8 to 3/4 groups. EBB

    Building on a Mauser Action

Isn't this really a Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota discussion? Many fine rifles have been built with Mauser actions. Isn't the purpose of the action to feed, hold, fire and eject rounds? In order to get a great rifle with any action you need a quality barrel, quality trigger, pillar bedding, floated barrel, and the best mounts and optics you can afford. The bolt face needs to be trued to the barrel and the lugs need to be lapped and the whole thing correctly headspaced. All of this with any action that can handle the pressures that you are creating should be an accurate long range rifle. Not trying to start anything but this just seems to make sense. EBB
  10. Like I said before this trip was great fun and the Bull Moose is the first one I've ever seen alive. EBB

    North Rim

The wife and I took a road trip to Idaho then went on to Jackson (Gand Teton) and Yellowstone. I was intrigued by the buffalo and took quite a few pictures. It was the closest I'd beento them since my Houserock hunt in 1983. I really didn't get what I wanted photowise but that's the way it goes sometimes. On the way back we decided to visit the North rim because neither of us had ever been there. No more than a mile in I got just what I missed in Yellowstone. There were 157 in this herd. EBB

    North Rim

Thanks Guys, I need to tell you that the "Parkies" are telling everyone that these a "Beefalo" not Bison or Buffalo. Now probably somewhere from around 100 years or so ago they do have some cattle genes. I''l bet anything they're saying this to set the stage for eradication efforts. I have absolutely no proof of this but I watch how our Government operates these days. While I was photographing them they were feeding closer to the road and I finally took the 800mm lens off and went to my 70-200. This Park Service vehicle pulls up and tells everyone that they are getting too close and are about to become aggressive. They order us back into our vehicles. I had my vehicle between me and the herd. I've no doubt that if I had argued with the Gal she would have cited me. None of the animals were pawing the ground or showing anything close to agression. I was closer than this to them on my hunt in 83. I'm really getting tired of Officials that want to make all of my decisions for me! EBB PS there are lots more photo's of buffalo from this day and one 6x6 bull from Yellowstone along with 3 moose. I'll post more photo's if people want to see them

    Coues Gender Identification

I never knew wingshooting Coues was a possibility. I've shot all of mine on the ground. Guess I'm just a meat hunter after all! EBB
  17. I had a 1973 and it was great. I kept dragging my bumper on the ground so I Baja'd the thing for extra clearance. The thing finally dry rotted out so I scrapped it. All I have left is from the floor down, parked out back with the tires dry rotting. If whoever buys this wants the higher suspension they can have it as long a nothing is left in my yard when they're done. It's in Cave Creek. EBB

    sb 1070

Please don't shoot the messenger! There are sections of 1070 that will not stand up to Constitutional muster. How do I know this? The section about stopping and picking people up has the same problems that an ordinance the Town Of Cave Creek passed. Admittedly, we were low hanging fruit for the ACLU and Maldef to bring suit against. We didn't even go to the next legal level to fight, they had us. Cave Creek worked with a Constitutional Lawyer, Sheriff Joe, and the County Attorney's Office to draft their ordinance. Cost us a lot of money going in to just fail. This section will not stand. As to the rest of it there are so many points for the ACLU to pick apart it is just going to cost the taxpayers a fortune in legal costs. Don't get me wrong, I do not support an open border, nor do I believe that people who entered this Country illegally have a right to stay. Unfortunately the Constitution and it's current interpretations do not for the most part support my beliefs on this issue. If you really want to get mad, research anchor babies. Google the term "subject to the jurisdiction thereof". If that doesn't make you mad, then nothing will. Will Governor Brewer sign this? Probably, she has no choice if she wishes to be a viable Candidate for Governor. Whether she should or not is another question. In 1996 I spoke with Jan Brewer and thanked her for the Concealed Carry Permit process that had been passed while she was Majority Whip in the Senate. She looked at me and said, "I didn't give you anything you didn't already have". I was impressed by that statement as she was instumental in giving that right back to us. She's a stand up person in an awful spot. EBB
