Try the eastside of the Galiuros, Deer Creek and Rattlesnake Mesa are good spots, as long as you are prepaired to do at least 6 to 8 miles a day on foot, dont be just another road hunter, cause this will only get you dust and dispair. China Peak can get over hunted, unless you do a 3 to 4 day pack hunt, which is how it should be done. Water is scarce so be prepaired to pack plenty. I have taken 6 Coues in unit 32 over the past 10 years, 3 of them scoring in the 90 to 95 inch range, but i had to work hard for them, so be ready to hunt from sun up to sundown, and dont count out the lower lying areas. Good Luck BC

    ROAD CONDITIONS UNIT #1

I will be heading up to unit #1 tomorrow to chase Turkey, wondered if anyone had info on forest service roads around the Greens Peak area? We want to camp around the 117 rd. And how about the Big Lake area, and Black river? I think I will call the ranger District also.

    Best grunt calls for whities

I like the Mordern Call Products, Coues Buck Call. I drew a nice 3 point to within 25 yards of me, this after I had already shot over his back just 20 minutes earlier. These are hands free and very compact, check them out at: http://www.moderncallproducts.com/ Oh yeah, I nailed him through a Manzanita bush, down and cold!!!

Ever seen this before in Deer

Back in 2007 I shot a whitetail in unit 32 that had a few of those tasty guys in its skull. That meat was just fine, never tasted any better!!! Didnt know what they were though, now I do.

    average coues buck measurements

The Coues white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus couesi) is one of the smallest deer in America. Coues deer stand around 28-32 inches tall at the shoulder and measure about 56 inches (1426 mm) from head to tail. A large field-dressed buck will rarely exceed 80-90 lbs. (although some can exceed 100 pounds) . You can find out more if you scroll down to the bottom of the CWT home page.

    New State Land Fees

Wow that’s quite a jump!!! I guess I won’t be buying another one of those for our family outings!! A few years ago I was scouting for my upcoming pig hunt in the Willow springs/Freeman road area when a Pinal County Sherriff pulled me over, he informed me that I was trespassing on State Trust Land, Well I informed him that I was pre-hunt scouting, and I had a current hunting license, His response was “are you game fully pursuing an animal at this time”? No I said, just scouting, to that he say’s, your trespassing as soon as you left the main road please leave the area. So for two years I have bought the STL permit, just so there was no confusion as to whether the family and I were legal or not. WELL NO MORE!!! I will be packin my .22 mag every time I go off the main road, and as Rory Atkins said, I will take a few shots just to prove that I am hunting. But I will not be falling for the AZ Trust Lands little game any more!!
  15. BACKCOUNTRY

    this is interesting

According to the Pinal County Deputy that pulled me over way out in unit # 37B, "you must be game fully and legally pursuing a game animal" otherwise you are tresspassing!!! Yes I had a hunting license, but I was only out scouting, and that to him was not good enough! So he ran me off. Now I have a State Trust Land use permit with me at all times! If I had my .22 cal rifle, I could have told him that I was Bunny hunting. But now I know!!! Thanks MR Deputy sir...

    BUSTED BY THE BACKDOOR GOBBLER.

BUSTED BY THE BACKDOOR GOBBLER. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Its early morning and quite cool out, 25 degrees to be exact, I am sitting at 8500 ft. in a ground blind I built with downed pine bows last evening. I have been sittin for almost two hours, a little purttin here, a little yelpin there, but no report back from the timbers. That’s when it happens!!! 30 yards up the hill behind me, a big Tom lets go with a great big GOBBLE, GOBBLE, and GOBBLE!!!! Holy Crap!!! He has snuck-up behind me and is lookin right strait at me!!!! I have my back to him, but I am twisting my neck around like some kinda crazy Owl trying to watch him. Now his BIGGER brother walks up, jumps onto a tree stump, and lets it rip….GOBBLE, GOBBLE, GOBBLE, GOBBLE…. Man I am trapped; these guys were now 50ft behind me, coming right straight at me, if I were to bat an eye lash, they would know!!! So here I am trying to figure out; how am I going to pull a quick draw McGraw on these boys, but they keep coming closer and closer I still have not moved, and my neck is starting to cramp-up, but I do have my fingers on my Rem.12ga. And I await the chance to make my SWAT TEAM move. Just then the Bigger brother squawks a slight little PURT …. And they are off. I grab the trusty 3” magnum and find a target, The big guy has his back to me at 20 yards, his smaller twin turns broadside at 35 yards, the twin is in my sights and takes the trigger… I drop the hammer on him just as he is taking to the air, Feathers fly, Muzzle blast and flash the crisp morning air, and he is already at MACH 2 heading for a dark canyon off to the east. I spend over an hour looking for a crash landed 30 pound pile of black wings and feathers, hoping to see two stiff legs pointing to the Heavens. Nope, nothing….. I have been rejected by the Big Gobbler in the sky, No tom for me. Now, I do remember reading about these Back Door snipers, but to experience it is almost too much for my Fruitless pursuits… Have you any tales of these BACKDOOR BIRDS???

    Loyalty Point Question

I do remember several years back I had a Application rejected for some reason. I guess that could explain it, that is if the G&F are correct in their numbers. Anyways, I do plan on being drawn this year, thanks to UPS, the odds are getting better. Come on unit #1 early bull... thanks for all the input. BC
  20. I just checked the F&G web page to see how many Bonus points I had for ELK, and found somthing odd. I have 8 bonus points for elk but none are from loyalty points? It shows loyalty points for Deer, Javelina and Turkey but none for Elk. I guess I will be calling the local office. Or am I missing somthing in the way they issue these points? Anyone else have bonus point problems in the past? BC
  21. Got this off the web: Anyone have more info? Could this be Copper Canyon area? A couple co-workers are heading that way tomorrow, and would like to know the situation. Wildfire Burning Near San Manuel Oct 30, 2007 08:20 AM MST (from AZstarnet.com) Fire crews are battling a wildfire burning near San Manuel, north of Tucson. Tuesday morning crews from the Department of Corrections in Catalina and Fort Grant were fighting the Deer Fire. It is being called the Deer Fire because fire investigators think it may have been started by deer hunters. The Deer Fire started yesterday and burned about 50 acres. By Tuesday morning, the fire had burned about 300 acres. There are two fire engines on scene from the San Manuel and Oracle Fire Departments. The wildfire is not threatening any buildings. Forest leaders say it should be contained in a few days.

    Game Processor near Tucson

They do not like to process meat that has already been de-boned.... Last year I paid $165.00, that included 20 lbs summer sausage, 20 lbs Jalapeno summer sausage and all the other steak cuts, roasts and some chops.

    Game Processor near Tucson

I would recommend Wild Game Processors to any one looking for a good honest deal. They are fairly quick and have always provides me with some very well cut pieces on meat. I have had several types of summer sausage and beef sticks made by them over the last 5 years, Deer, Elk and Javelina. Keep in mind they don’t like to process d-boned meats, I would call ahead just to make sure. Good luck on your hunt, I hope to be bringing something to MGP to hang….. Dont know about Dickmans..... The Sausage shop does good work, But it can take up to 3 months to get it back....

    new to 32

It took me 9 straight days of hard hunting last year to pull a nice 3x3 out of the Galiuros. Last day 11:30 am 100 yards, he was at a full spooked run.....I was not going to let this guy get away again! This was all due to the very high pressure this area had recieved from hunters, hikers, and horseback riders. The best advice....Get way away form any trailhead or road Try 4-5 miles back in, do at least 3 nights in a backcountry spike camp. anything between 4-mile and Deer creek are good if you get far away from the roads and Trail heads.. good luck BC
  25. Well I have gathered-up all my hunting reg's and G&f's survey/odds info today, Now all I have to do is decide where I would like to hunt and what type of game meat I would like to fill my freezer with! (IF I GET DRAWN) Im thinking about unit 37B...... Now I know this is 99.9% Muley country, But I have been seeing lots of track in the Black Hills area when I go Dove/Quail and Duck hunting in the area. Just last week a co-worker told me that the biggest Desert Muley he has ever seen, was a few years ago, down around the Willow Springs Ranch area. Im quite familiar with all the water holes and gas line roads in the Black Hill and old Barkerville town site, I have even spent some time around the 96 hills area, But all I ever come across is tracks It looks like this could be a very tough hunt (nov-9...18) and thats just the way I like it, but I also love the taste of game meat. any thoughts??? or should I just stick with good ol COUES?
