I was going to stay out of this, especially after I read the "other Site". But when I read monstercoues post that he has the tag again!!!! Well I won't comment on the other issues with the investigation, but that is LAME. What a CHUMP.

That is an Az Black. It might not be that young. All though most of the young look like this color phase when small and then get progressively darker with age, some, especially females IMO, stay this lighter gray and black. This is my favorite rattler behind c. mollossus (Black Tail with green and yellow body). Thanks for the picture.

Does anyone, or has anyone used this trail camera before? Any input on battery life, locking, etc. would be appreciated. I'm thinking of buying this camera, because I can get it for 100$ new, and this is all I'm willing to spend on a trail cam in case it gets stolen. Is this cam worth it, or should I just save my money for awhile and risk putting an expensive cam in the field. I only have one spot I'm interested in putting it, and it is about .5 miles from the nearest 4 wheel drive road so I don't think it gets alot of foot traffic, but I am still leary. If anyone has pics from one of these cams that they could post so I can get an idea of pic quality that would also be greatly appreciated. Also how much do extra mem. cards for this cam cost, are they a universal card? Thanks in advance for any advice ya'll can lend.

Draw Results Available Online
BigMoqui replied to Outdoor Writer's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I pulled a dec. tag in 36c. This is my first deer tag in arizona after 7 years of trying. I'm stoked. Hope the fire didn't get it too bad down there. -
How many times do you see this??
BigMoqui replied to akuritone's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
This is way cool from a biology/ecology standpoint. I don't want to know the exact location, but are there any grasslands or even juniper pinyon woodland nearby. There are antelope in 21n, 6a, 5a, and 4a. These units all have good grasslands or at least extensive j/p woodland with open park like areas. This is one of the coolest pictures I've ever seen. Wonder what the kids would look like? -
Camera thieves SUCK!
BigMoqui replied to azsagebrush's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Was this camera on water? I want to put one up, but I'm leary. 200$ is alot to stick out in the woods, where by law it can be taken if on public prop. -
Woodzaz "Im cool with it if the wolves have to put in for the draw too." That's funny

What city/town is that wilderness area close to? My bro. lives in Chico and there are hogs to come by on the west slope of the sierras, but same thing, brush is to thick for glassing in most areas. Those blacktails are pretty cool little deer. When I was there in Feb I saw 30+ in one canyon in one evening of driving. My nephew (7) said he'd never seen A deer so I took him on an impromtu drive into the deer woods, and he loved it. He didn't want to go home so we spent several hours after dusk driving the dirt roads near Butte and Paradise. Mom was pi$$ed but it was worth it to see the kids face every time he would spot one of those little buggers. I agree with AZHN, if cali. wants to get rid of thier feral hog pop. why wouldn't they give information out on hot spots?

Anyone have any stories from this weekend?
BigMoqui replied to matthewp45's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Ditto to that last post. I know most of the people on this site are what I would consider ethical hunters so this does not apply to you if you don't do this, but for all you smuck road hunters on this site get a life. Anyone who doesn't have some sort of disability, but still chooses to hunt out of a moving vehicle is a moron. How you could even imply that this is in some way ethical is beyond me. All it takes is the skill to drive a vehicle nothing else. I was in a spot this weekend where I knew there would be alot of traffic, but at a certain point Friday afternoon I said to myself, "This is fubar". When I went back to my camp at midday I would see a road hunter go by every 10-15 minutes, and the canyon I was in wasn't very big or long. If your handicapped or you need a vehicle to get to your hunting spot that's fine, but if niether of these apply to you then get out and walk. Oh yea, for all of those road hunters who went by my camp and waved, and I just turned my back on you, that wasn't by accident and I was trying to be an A@@ so get a life or a new hobby, because for most of us on this site it's not a hobby, it's a way of life. -
In Jan and Feb of this year I hunted the Rez side of the Babs with a tribal hunting party. There was so much lion sign in the canyon we were hunting it was impossiblee to walk down the washes without seeing tracks and scat. We asked the caretaker of the land about a particlarly large set( I'd never seen lion tracks this big) in the next canyon over to us. He response was, "No, no es leon, pero es un tigre!" For those that don't speak spanish he was reffering to Arizona's resident male jaguar. He said he moves in and out of the Babs and specialized in eating all the javelina that were there. This was a little nerve racking to know we were roaming the same hills, but it also got you kind of exhilarated to go into the scrub. The care taker also mentioned that the coyotes that brought illegals through the area were aware of the jaguar and religiously avoided the canyons that he haunts. So maybe we do need to bring back the jaguar to southern Arizona's border.

Just out of curiosity how many bonus points do some of you have in Az.? I didn't draw a tag this year so I'll be bow hunting( thank god for over the counter tags). I now have as follows: Sheep: 4 b.p. antelope: 4 b.p. elk: 4 b.p. deer: 4 b.p. javelina: 1 b.p. turkey: 1 b.p. At least I get a loyalty b.p. next year. I've only drawn one javelina tag and one fall turkey tag in the last 4 1/2 years. Oh well, there's always next year.

I have a friend who invited me to arrow a coues on her property this year. She has 500 acres on the San Pedro and a doe herd of about 20 animals. When I asked if it would be possible to hunt her property this year, her exact words were, "Oh, definetly, I'll even come down to the river and help you clean it." talk about excited, I'm friggin' stoked. One question though, she said the rut doesn't occur there until late Jan. early Feb. and there are very few bucks roaming around before then. My question is what are the chances of seeing bucks withe the herd during the Sep. archery season? Is in not even worth hunting in Sep., and should I wait until Jan. for this rare opportunity? She also said I could harvest one of her 30+ piggies during the new HAM fall season as long as I get the tag(35a/30b). Also I was thinking of setting up salt blocks(the property has not had cattle on it since 1984) and wanted to know how you guys pick your spot out. The flood plain is about a third of a mile wide with many pockets of vegetation and cottonwwod bottoms. The river itself has a really good game trail along it's bank, and the mesquite/catclaw thickets extend another 1/4 mile away from the bottoms. I've seen deer in all these areas, but any advice would be welcome.

I used my 270 win. these season to take a few yotes and my 36c pig, but I'm wondering what input some of you might have for the following rounds: 6mm Rem., 243 Win., and 25-06. I'm leaning toward the 06 and my least favorite is the 243. I know you could get the job done with a 223 or something in that range, but I aslo want to have a spare deer rifle for my nephews(I have 4 ages 6-13) who are going to be hunting big game very soon(as long as the moms will let them). I'm looking at another Rem 700 or possibly a CZ or Ruger, something small and light wieght. Any input on this would also be appreciated.

The open sights are for me not the kids. It will be drilled and tapped for a scope as I mentioned above. No one has answered my question about the components of a 25-06 and a 30-06 bullet (and 270)and if there are common parts shared in the reloading process. I know nothing about reloading, but it would be nice if you didn't have to buy different parts, tools, etc. Anyone know this info?

All my other rifles are scoped except one of the 10/22s. I'd like to have a light weight open sight rifle for some serious hiking. Of course I want it drilled and tapped for a scope for the kids, but I've taken all my coyotes and pigs within 55 yards, and plus I just like open sights, especially for doing some serious climbing and descents in the hills. The 270 has open sights on it, and before I fitted it with a scope I was getting quarter size groupings at 100 yards. I'll admit that once I scoped it my shots were right on top of each other, but I'm pretty confident in my shooting at 100 yards or less with open sights, and again this rifle will be primarily for me to predator hunt and for javies @ under 100 yards. The nephew thing was just a side note, so far their moms are saying no big game hunting except for the youngest's mom, who says she doesn't care(my sis's kid), but it will be a few years until he's ready. The other kids mothers(inlaws) did not grow up around hunting and it was hard enough to convince the one to let the oldest go bird hunting this year. She eventually was broke down by Michaels constant begging, and she let him go dove hunting. He loved it and went out about 4 times with me last season. P.S. I know you all are probably sick of hearig this from 270, but he's right it's the best all around cal. I just like guns and want another one, I'm sure some of you can relate to that. I'm also in the market for a win or henry lever action in 45 long colt. Why you ask? I don't know, cause I like guns, I guess. that and I already own an 1873 revolver in long colt.
-
I also have a 300 wthby mag and a 30-06, besides the 270, and I was thinking of starting to reload. I really don't know anything about reloading, but won't the 25-06 use some of the same components that the 270 and 30-06 use. I'm just assuming here, as I said I don't know a thing about reloading. Again this gun will have open sights and be primarily for me for predators and javelina. I'd like it to be light weight so that if I wanted to pack it in somewhere while I'm backpacking it wouldn't be too heavy. As you can see I have plenty of the larger calibers, but the only small calibers I have are 10/22s.

Least favorite was a poor choice of words. Lets just say the numbers on the 25-06 are impressive so that's why I'm leaning that way. I'm not worried about recoil for me and the kids are tuff. The oldest was shooting my 12 super magnum at ducks this year. He'd only shot 22 rimfires and 12g 2 3/4 inch shells at clays and dove before this. I was wondering how he would react, after his first shot he turned to me with a S@#$ eatin' grin on his face. After that i knew he didn't care. By the way he shot 3 ducks on his first time out(better than my one ring neck for the trip).

Has anyone out there purchased one of these mossbergs yet? I have a friend who loves his mossberg shotguns and says they are as good as remington and berretta But I haven't even seen one of these rifles in the store yet. Anyone got one? Are they O.K. or junk?

Nikon Buckmaster 3x9-40 is the all around best scope for the price. I'm a starving student and this scope cost about 200$ a couple years ago. It is the Best scope for the price.

Good point kwp about the increased pressure and safety issues, again I'm just curious what everyone's thinking is. As far as fall hunting having an impact on javelina herds from what I've read they breed year round in Az as weather and conditions permit. If anyone has any literature or knowledge otherwise please share. The reduction of overall herd size, is, in my opinion a good idea. Az has never had so many collared peccary than it does now. I see them above the Rim more and more and historically they were never present there.

For those of you who took the survey and answered no to the hunting javelina in the fall, can I ask why? I understand if the rifle hunters don't want the regular joe schmo road hunter to just say oh well when he sees some pigs and then lets loose a barage of 30/06 on them and forgets about his deer tag. This, I could see being very annoying, but the archery hunt would be quite and the quail hunters have guns already and are making noise. 57% of you said no javelina hunts at all and another 28% said just not coinciding with the other hunts. I'm just curious. It seems like deer hunters don't want to share thier woods.

On the archery page a couple of guys mentioned trick tanks. I've heard the word charco, cattle tank, impoundment, but never trick tank. Can someone explain, is this just another word for the same thing or are they different some how?
