Legal to carry pistol during Archery only Hunts
AZoutdoorsman replied to AZP&Y's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
WooHoo! Thanks G&F! Besides, I shot a tigher group with my switchback bow at 50 yards than my Para .45. -
Okay, I can?t carry a firearm to hunt any other legal species if I am in a possession of an archery only non permit tag for Dec.16, 2005 through Jan. 31st, 2006 archery-only season when I am hunting for deer. That is what I am reading in the R12-4-318 C2 regulation book. All I can say is stupid! I can?t even use my general hunting license to its fullest. That?s like saying ?you can only fish with one fishing pole at a time when you have purchased a two pole stamp?. I am not going to spend all that money on my bow setup to use a handgun to shoot a deer, other wise I would not be bow hunting. Get a clue AGF, if I can get close enough to shoot a deer with my pistol, surely I can hit it with my bow and arrow!

TAM, So I would be legal if I carried a side arm with an over the counter deer tag and I was hunting for coyotes too, right? Always wondered about that.

On opening day, I took a spot on a hill and stumbled on two other Hunters. So I left that hill to find another one. Upon scoping the ridges and other locations, I saw so many Hunters that I had to settled for a spot near one of the Hunters on a small mountain. It was a hot day and nothing was moving and to make it worse, the moon was bright the night before and through out the hunting days. I glassed all day only to see two large does. Thoughout the day I only heard 3 shots. This repeated it self the next day. Then on my last day it was even worse. Hunters got bored and started to target practice. Friends of mine in the hunting camp who have always shot at least one deer in 34A was given a goose egg. The Game Warden said she only knew of two Hunters that have tagged a buck. Seems like Helvetia bucks have been hunted out. I talked to a couple of experience glassers and they had a hard time finding bucks. Looks like I need to move on to another hunting ground for this last weekend hunt. I am afraid that every where I hunt in Unit 34A will be crowed because of the 1000 tags given out. This is my first hunt and it's not going very well due from too many Hunters, low population of bucks, too hot and bright moon. Anyone having the same problem in Box Canyon, Saw Mill or any other 34A locations or is it just my luck?

First hunt for son and me
AZoutdoorsman replied to AZoutdoorsman's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Thanks everyone for your inputs! I just went to Wally World and got him some cameo clothes and gloves. Got to go to Sportsmen to pickup binoculars, boots and misc. things, Wally World is out of stock on every thing but clothes. Yes DEERSLAM, I will keep this as fun as I can for him, bagging the deer will be a bonus. I don't have any old hunting rifle to give him but I was thinking the "Manage Recoil" Ammo open up allot of possibilities of bigger caliber than .243. I was also tossing up the idea of a 7mm-08 youth model Seven. I was at Wally World and talked to a nice gentleman that is hunting a week before me. He told me that Gardner Canyon is the best spot to hunt. I am going to take my son and let him practice scouting this Sunday. I will post a report on his findings. Thanks Guys! -
Remember your first hunt that your dad took you too? Help me make a good impression with my son so that he and I will hunt together for the years to come. This is my first hunt for whitetail. I just wanted to get recommendations on where to scout in unit 34a (hunt on 11/11 - 11/20). I read that Box Canyon and Sawmill Canyon is a good start. He is eager to help glass for whitetails. He is practicing on his pellet gun and getting ready for next year's hunt if all goes well this year. I am looking forward to buying him a center rifle for Christmas. Any suggestions on a rifle and caliber for deer? He is 9 years old, 4 1/2 ft and 95 pounds. Thanks in advance!
