    Lever guns

No but I plan to. My '94 30-30 has the same POI for both 150gr and 170gr so I'm a little leary of new stuff but I will at least try it out. I don't really need the extra range accuracy with this gun because it is open-sighted and I can't see well enough any more to try a shot much past 120 yds with it. If you're shooting a scoped rifle and want to reach out there past 150 yds, these may be just the ticket. That rifle in the video must be a .4xx or something, it really has a kick to it!

    reloading?

ditto what Red Rabbit suggested. I have seen the Lymans and Lees and they look OK but my RCBS setup does everything that I want it to do and has been doing it for over 20 yrs.

    Bushmaster Stainless Varmint Special 223

It was great trading with you Rolkat. Rifle was as nice as you described. Got the scope zeroed in with about 12 shots. Sent about 200 more rounds through it this afternoon and it shot like a dream. Nice, tight groups with two or three different kinds of ammo. Thanks again!

    Bushmaster Stainless Varmint Special 223

It was great talking with you RolKat. Looking forward to picking this up and burning through some of that ammo tomorrow.
  6. When Remington brought the Managed Recoil cartridges out, I decided to go ahead and get my son a rifle that he could use anywhere on almost any game for the rest of his life. We got a .270 Model 700 and then swapped the stock out for a youth stock. With the MR, the felt recoil is down around the .243. We used these cartidges at the range because I didn't want to start the flinch habit. He got pretty good punching paper and got his mechanics down and his confidence up.When we got out to the field, I put standard loads in and he never felt the difference. He's grown quite a bit and we recently swapped back to the full-sized stock. The .243 is a great all-around small game cartridge but I have always preferred the .270 due to the extended versatility. With the Managed Recoil cartridges, you can start kids out with a little more gun that they can carry from now on.

    long long distance shooting

The charts show just how high the arc of the bullet would have to be as well as how far off you would be if you misjudged the distance by 50 yds either way. Something to think about before you try that long, long shot. If you have a particular load that you would like to see a chart on, tell me which bullet you're using, the muzzle velocity, and the distance between the crosshair center and the center of your bore. I can post the chart but I would have to e-mail the ballistics table to you. The table shows velocity, energy, mommentum, drop, and time of flight. Just for reference, here's the chart for the .308. Not much different than the .243 is it?

    long long distance shooting

Yep. Kinda far-fetched but that's how it calculates. The energy left at 1000 yds is 340 ft/lbs and the velocity is 1237.7 fps! The top of the arc is at ~575 yds and at that point it is 118.53" high! Here's the plot:

CNE ELK, the calculations for your 100 gr Hornady BTSP show that for a 1000 yd zero, you would be 7.27" high at 25 yds.
