    AZ Newbie Question

That's a pretty funny post. You'll get it all figured out soon, unfortunately it sounds like your in for lots of dissapointment (lottery system). I would also suggest grabbing regs or even throwing your phone number out there. Tons of people would love to call and chat for a while I'm sure! Good luck on AZ hunting.

    ****NOT MY HERO****

I shot a monster bull in Unit 9 with my bow! If anyone needs info on where unit 9 is, shoot me a pm and I'll draw you a map. All kidding aside, That's a really nice buck!!! The only secrets in AZ are atleast 2 hours from a truck. Doubt the out-of-staters will bother you there. Only time will tell, but I guessed I'd be pretty bummed too if I like to hunt the unit.

Can Someone Critique my Trail Cam Setup

I prefer to have the cam very close to the ground, I shoot for the legs. Maybe 12in" of the ground, I enjoy getting the small critters too. When they are in test I will see what kind of distance I can get and then double check to see how level the beam is by trying to get under the detection beam without the test light going off. if I can, then I shim it down with a stick and then start over. Normally I spend about 15min just double checking and then checking again. If it's not set up very well, it's dang near worthless. To me, your cam seems to close, if you have a group of deer at your site your field of view is probably pretty weak to get multiple deer that are spread out a bit. As far as false pictures, I normally do a little grass/weed matinence if necessary. I do like the pics from straight above (very interesting), but it would seem they are very isolated to a small area. Good luck, I find the cams very addicting!

    Glassing up......

About 8 years ago, a small female stalked us while a bud and I were mapping a plan to put a stalk on a buck (archery). She got within 20 yards and my buddy make a lethal shot and did a full body mount with her (a never forget moment for sure). I've been glassing with 15's for about ten yrs and am pretty confident in my ability, but to date have never glassed one up . Always carry my tag and I'm hopeful my day will come. oh yea just to add a little insult to injury, I get them on my cameras almost every time I change the cards!!!! ARRGGHHH....
  7. Oh well!!!!!! I got really excited to see my card hit for an antelope tag. I wrote NMGF an email today inquiring about the hit. Guess all it takes is a quick log on to coues.com to see my elation is unnecessary and it's a new thing this year to take the money out in advance of the draw. I had a feeling it was too good to be true. BUT CHECK YOUR CARD FOR UTAH, THEY'RE CHARGING CARDS NOW FOR YOUR TAGS. NO HITS FOR ME THOUGH

    They are up!!

I've gotten through twice in the last hour to check for my kids and after I put in the info it says technical difficulties, call back when someone is available to help me. Should I keep trying?

    Angie's 1st Big Game Success

OK Tracy, if calculations are correct, the next time I go out with you two to help out will be the third time. So, with that said, third times the charm and I will bear witness to the next big game animal going down. Let's see.........Yep that would be Angie's future 09 whitetail tag, which in turn adds up to an eighties or higher three by. I going to plan on staying a few days for this one because if you guys tag out the day after I leave AGAIN I'm going to start getting butt hurt. Can't wait to see the double mounts, his and her piggies are going to look sweet together!!!! Congrats Angie, can't wait to help out on the next hunt!!! You told me you were getting your pig "tomorrow" and you weren't lyin'!!!!!!!!!!
  10. MY LETTER TO G AND F ONLY TOOK A FEW MINUTES, WE NEED TO STICK TOGETHER AND VOICE OUR OPINIONS. I BELIEVE I CUT AND COPIED THESE EMAIL ADDRESSES FROM A POST BY BOWSNIPER. PLEASE TAKE TIME TO VOICE YOUR OPINION. BWakeling@azgfd.gov AMunig@azgfd.gov ccook@azgfd.gov Rulemaking@azgfd.gov To Whom it may concern, I'm writing in to voice my opinion on the new proposed salt/mineral and feed ban. I hope you will reconsider this new law. I believe the direction the department is going is bad for hunters in general. I see the new law is a piece of legislation added the what appears to be an bad agenda for the Game and Fish of Arizona (strangulate success & increase opportunity). I personally have attempted to take game over salt and feed for the last three or four years and have yet to be successful. I would like to continue to hunt over salt/minerals as I believe, eventually things will come together and I will harvest a coues buck over salt. I have endless amounts of my personal time and have added revenue to our AZ Economy from my attempts with salt/minerals and feed over the years. I ask you to not put the new law into effect and let hunters enjoy continued success and heartache through their attempts at using salt/minerals to their advantage. Thanks, Justin Leitner

    Last chance javelina

That is just way too cool Tracy!!! I'm glad you stuck it out and sealed the deal. I'm envious of your double archery scores this month. Way to kick butt! Five animals in 60 days right? You da man! We need to hang out more often so you can share that horseshoe, it's big enough to share. LOL

    Mother of all smuggler camps

I'm starting to hunt down south again. Haven't seen em yet, although I know it's only a matter of time. What I have seen is lots of trash. Pretty sad when you can glass up endless amounts of trash.

proposed ban on salt and feed

I received a response in a matter of an hour or so from one of the recipients. Semi generic, but never the less was assured it would be passed on for review.

    so mad!!!

Pretty impressive Adam, very nice deer and follow up performance. You took a pretty good beating on your thread. Sorry for ya on that one.

    so mad!!!

Good luck on finding your deer. I have tried out lots of different broadheads and I like the wac ems four or three blade. The blades are very secure and stay on. I broke a blade in half but blade was still on (what was left of it). The Rocket Ultimate steels are very affortable and fly great like the wac ems. I don't think their as strong though, the blades seem to come off rather easy. These two heads seem to fly more like my field tips. Someone mentioned smaller heads, I agree on account of trying to get a pass through. I bet lots of guys on here would help you look, I would take them up on it. Can't wait to see those pics!

    Proud Papa

My daughter Ashley drew two tags this year. Archery bull in unit 8 and an early youth deer tag in 33. The elk hunt didn't go as planned, we did some scouting and picked out our spots to build blinds. We had set ups at three water holes which were all going to be a 20 to 25 yard shot. We hunted for nine days, locating and calling in the mornings and sitting water every evening. The first night Ashley passed a spike bull that stood before us at 15 yards for three or more minutes. Little did we know that was the only action we would encounter on this hunt. She worked her butt off, showed an extreme amout of patience and I just wish we could gotten a little more action on this hunt. Now the good stuff REDEMPTION! This was her first rifle deer hunt, I had put her in on the Kaibab and Dec Whitetail with no luck so this year I tried the youth hunt in 33 and 36a. She drew out and was thrilled to have a rifle tag. To date she had tried to archery hunt deer, sitting water and spot and stalk. That's a tough hunt for anyone, let only a fourteen year old young lady! The first weekend we went out with her two little brothers, 8 and 10 years old. It was very windy and the glassing was tough. Although we did have a lot fun, I was only able to pick up does and a group of pigs on the first day. Since she had past on that bull and it didn't pay off, she wasn't putting too many requirements on her first deer. She was hoping though! The next weekend she had Friday off. The plan was to try a different area and hope for the best. We hunted high in the morning. I glassed up two bucks, they were forkies, maybe a two by three I think. My buddy Harvey picked up a solid three by, maybe mid 80s way up and out there. She opted for the challenge and we took off. It took an hour and a half to get in range of this buck. Each time we would crest over the next ridge he was in the same spot, as if he was waiting for us? Our luck ran out however, and the sun dial was not in our favor. When we crossed the final ridge the buck should have been about 150 yards away. However, he vanished without a trace. Discouraged but not beaten we took a breather and then decided to head back down around and look for the smaller bucks. By now it was 10:30 or 11 and we just couldn't find them, not really prime time for glassing. We proceeded to nap for a while like all hard working hunters should do. After our slumber we talked strategy and decided to head for mulie country. The idea was we might be able to work one faster if we were shedding daylight. We got set up glassing again at about 4, it was slow going and started getting really windy. Finally after about an hour or so, I spotted some deer, a doe and two fawns. Knowing there was a pretty good chance for a small buck to still be hanging out, I kept a close eye on them. They were about 8 tenths of mile out. Eventually a couple bigger bodied deer stood up and began milling around. I had to wait until they got out into the sun and bang, Harvey looks at me and smiles. One is a four by he said, it was so on! Amist our excitement we managed to map a plan and get to it. We charged to close the distance, and about half way there, the two bucks topped over a roll and we thought this was good for us for sure. Top over and shoot, easy right? Well we finally got to the hill and crept up and over, the only problem was, they were gone, and down the other side got very thick. We proceeded as slow as we could glassing about every five steps. We finally laid eyes on the buck, he was 125 yards out. We dropped down and helped Ash prepare for the shot. The shooting sticks weren't feeling right she said, so we tried our packs. No good either, back to the sticks we went. I helped steady them and leaned on her as well to get her steadied. Harvey slid forward to block out the setting sun and at that moment I heard Ashley say "that's perfect." Boom, the shot rang out and we all knew he was hit! He staggered within seconds and dropped about 10 yards from where she shot him. She was shooting an H and R 243 single shot with a leupold scope. She had done exactly as instructed and center punched his shoulder. She couldn't believe her eyes as we walked up to the buck. As if I didn't know she was already hooked on this passion of ours, now it was even more clear to me than ever before. She's already asking about our next year's draw. Whoo Hoo!!!!! I want to thank my best friend the Harvster for his eight mile eyes (ha ha) and also my good friends Greg, Little G and Hank for their assistance on the elk hunt. We have also met a new friend Tracy, whom we met on this site. He put out max effort for complete strangers on Ashley's elk hunt. Helped us scout and hunt, drove all the way from Phoenix on several ocassions. He said several times he had alway hoped he could help out a younster and boy did he ever! Thanks for everyone's support!!!!! Justin and Ashley

    cross bow

A friend of mine wanted to check into the challenged hunter exceptions and he told me he thought a docter's note and some red tape and he could use a crossbow on an archery hunt. Not sure if he ever pursued it though. A shoulder injury made it very uncomfortable to draw his bow, but he didn't care for rifle hunting that much.
  25. Sweet, we need more stories like that one.
