    USO preparing for the hunt?

I'll buy hanging tons of stands, it's what people do. Having a hard time with the motor oil comment. Sounds like a disgruntled guy with a unit 9 tag not liking an outfitter hanging stands. You check water holes to possibly hang a stand on for your unit 9 tag. If you see none, you might hang your stand. If you see one, you still might hang your stand. If you see two or even three, your probably going to search out another tank. Hence, if you have intentions on hunting a certain water hole or two, you might wanna get your stand up a little early! This is just my experience with Unit 9, I've had the early archery bull tag twice in 16 yrs of applying for that hunt and let's face it, not only do you have the premium tag, you inherit all the mess that goes with that tag IMO.
  2. I don't shoot yr round, but with lots and lots of practice I get out to 100 yards with a whisker biscuit while practicing. No brainer on the biscuit.

    Remove Freezer Odor

We had a problem with our GFI shutting off periodically, fortunately the freezer sits right in front of our car and the first sign of moisture on the ground and we reset the GFI. Never had any meat actually though out thank goodness. I was going to look into a battery powered alarm that would let you know if temps drop, pretty sure they make one or something to that effect. I couldn't imagine losing a full freezer full after a successful hunting season. Good luck getting the smell out, seems like few good ideas on this post.

    E-Scouting

When I go to Heaven, my kids will still be hunting all our spots and hopefully their kids too! I do like the different responses, again to each his own. I definitely agree with the statement that when you tell someone to go some where, the multiplier effect can be endless. I wise, salty dog on this site told me "loose lips, sink ships" when we both knew we had a good thing going at that particular time.
  7. My questions would be, is he afraid of heights and does he mind getting wet if it were to rain? A treestand is the only way to fully enjoy the entire experience IMO. Blinds are for sleeping, or at least that is what I find easiest to do when I'm in one. A dual set up is nice, I've done that in the past so I could jump in the blind with one of my kids if they can come on a certain day.

    E-Scouting

I didn't get into hunting until I was in my early 20s, was raised by my grandparents and my grandfather and I had almost a 60 year age gap. I missed out on about everything a son could possibly do with his father. I get your point for sure that some people have never hunted and had no one to teach them. But on the other hand, there is massive amount of "how to info" on this site and on the web in general. Any effort into research and a solid day of driving your unit and checking for access points is all you need to get started. Just a friendly reminder to all, my inbox is ready to receive coordinates.........

I agree with you guys for sure. I do find it funny and for some reason always get a little chuckle out of some of "not your honey hole" posts.

    Awesome Encounter

Very cool! I've kept rattlesnakes in captivity. Watching them bite/inject venom into there prey and then wait til the prey dies so they can begin their meal never got old. Snakes in general are a favorite animal of mine for sure.

I think you should watch out watch you wish for. I respect your opinion and I would say to continue hunting under your values of fair chase hunting. A lion in my opinion is no different than hogs. You have to be realistic and look at the bigger picture. If in fact you find that you have a enormous amount of support for your opinion from hunters and non-hunters alike then what happens next? Lion hunts on private ranches are banned? Next year the entire state of Texas bans all hunting on private game reserves because the Feds say so. Although the lion makes a fantastic poster animal to persuade people to your view point, I believe it comes down to liberty and freedom from government regulations. Animals are breed for slaughter all day in every state, every country and this really isn't any different IMO And for reference, I would not hunt a lion on a private high fence ranch. But, I would love to go back and hog hunt in Texas again someday, high fence or not, either is fine with me. Baiting is considered "fair chase" in the record books, but is now illegal in the state of Arizona because the bureaucrats didn't like the success it can or can't create. Lot's of people don't like Lion hunts involving dogs, and I could go on and on.

    Tree stand info?

Placement is more important than brand. Try to face North and have some cover from the sun if possible. I try to pick a tree that leans back so you'll have a more natural backrest and not feel like your forced forward. Sportsman's guide has a wide selection of cheap tree stands, they also have the best deal going on a set of 20' foot ladder sticks. Very good set, between my friends and I we have 6 sets. If you don't plan on hiking in deep, I purchased a big ol klunky thing. I call it the Cadillac. It's so ridiculously comfortable, you might set it in your living room and watch TV. Impossible to fall out even if you fall asleep. I think my Cadillac ran me $70 bucks so about $110 w the ladder sticks. Send a pm if you need info about this set up. When I go deep I take my API stand and still hike in the same set of ladder sticks. Guys will use tree pegs to cut all the weight, but they're not legal.

    Tree Stand vs Groundblind

    Tree Stand vs Groundblind

Ground blinds are very safe and do keep you out of the elements. With that being said, I think sitting a ground blind is like watching paint dry. I go nuts sitting in a ground blind and prefer to call them sleep shacks. I love being 20 plus feet in the air with a 360 degree unobstructed view of mother nature. You can see animals coming from much further off and can watch them as they wind you and walk away :-). My vote is for treestands until that nasty monsoon storm sweeps through. Then I'll complain that I'm not in my blind.....
  20. I wanted to list these to see if there is any interest on here. I have four white spoke wheels with Carlisle Radials with less than 5 miles on them. st225/75r15 E rated tires. $400 for the set. Tires were purchased on 5-16 and trailer has been at the repair shop since then and stored indoors. Here is a picture of the style of wheels that the new tires are on. I might end up splitting the set and selling as individual spares.

I assume you have a single axle, are you interested in two? If you can tomorrow, let me know the exact tire height and how much clearance you have now and I'll check mine. Who wouldn't want a bit more ground clearance as long as they clear the fenders! If they rub, just take those pesky fenders off ;-)

    Any help or advice appreciated!

Personally, I think your idea of staying in a motel is best. With the sun rising late and setting early, you'll have ample time to get where you want to be and can try many different spots if you run into pressured areas. Crowds won't be much of an issue in my opinion and should be dead out there during the week. You will probably see road hunters, but doubt you will have any problems during a stalk. It does happen, but I wouldn't worry about it. Buy a pig tag and double your opportunity. Javelina can be a tad more difficult to find than a mediocre buck, but very easy to stalk into 40 yards or less for a shot. There eyesight is very poor and if the wind is right you can consistently sneak into close range. If you plan on spot and stalk, I would practice at long ranges and be comfortable out to at least 60 yards. Hunting stands or blinds can be effective if placement is good and depending on wind conditions might provide a closer shot. If you pick a bad spot for your set up, don't expect to see a single deer though. I'm not familiar with the area you are planning on hunting, hopefully someone else can help you on those questions. Snake boots shouldn't be necessary in Jan, however I have heard people say they have seen them out. If you like to call and/or rattle, I would certainly bring those and try them. People have had mixed results with calling coues and rattling. As a rule of thumb, the overlap line for mule deer and coues is about 3000ft in Southern AZ. Your tag is good for either if you end up in a transition type terrain with both coues and muleys. Muleys should be in full swing down South in early January, with the coues being right behind them. The farther South in the state you are, the later the coues rut. In extreme years for late rut, the end of January and even February can be good for the Southern most part of the state. I would recommend glassing to locate and then spot and stalk from there. Location is incredibly critical for stand or blind placement and without inside advice or a few days to decide on a good spot, that seems like it would be tough. Maybe guys will chime in on sitting water in January. That would be a good choice on a hot, dry year for sitting blinds or treestand in January.

brand new trailer tires with wheels

Yes they are still available. I am picking up my trailer from the repair shop tomorrow and I will have them dismounted asap. They will still have less than 10 miles on the tires. If I cannot sell the set of four, I might be willing to part them out as spares. TJ, I can measure the the bolt pattern, my spare is in the garage. 2&3/4" from bolt hole to hole and 5&1/2" straight across from bolt hole to hole. These measurements have been taken after only one beer while chomping down on coues burgers, they should be deemed reliable. I will be posting them on craigslist after they are dismounted, please let me know if anybody is interest. I'm assuming they will go fast since they are so common for trailer set ups.

    Sheep Draw Odds

I'm sitting here totally crushed. If I am taking in all the information correctly, it is likely that all my applications for the last 10 years for my kids and I have been totally worthless with a %0 percent chance of even making it into a draw. I'm guessing we have 35 or more separate applications I have turned in. I have zero issues with an allotment of tags going to a bonus pass, but it seems to me that we should know if the unit is "closed" for the general draw for the first and second choice applicants. I thought I knew how the bp pass worked and there were tags left over in each unit, I clearly see that was a mistake. I put our family in for sheep hunts based on proximity to our location knowing I will enjoy doing a lot of scouting if one of us were lucky enough to draw. Sounds like the Silverbells is %0 percent chance without max points on an individual app. Does anyone have exact units for each year that were completely gone because of the bonus pass before the general draw even had begun? I'm pretty heartbroken to think not one of our apps made it into a viable general drawing because of my lack of information. Seems to me, most hunters are totally unaware of this system of lumping all the tags together for sheep. Even if the closed units change year by year because the max points applications are all over the map for their choices, I still think it is a very flawed system the way they are running it. When I apply I want to at least think "so your telling me there's chance" when I send in my app. hahahaha What is the least favorite and second least favorite unit among max point holders, this will be our new 1st and 2nd choice. Please pm me the answer, I don't like competition in the draw. LMAO while shedding some tears at the same time.
