if you have the spring archery bear tag, you had better hurry up!
gotcoues replied to AZLance's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
I'm sure glad they are going to close the forest. It will cut off corridors for illegals and drug smugglers. -
Elkaholic, You misread Arrowsniper's post.......

I guess if this is the price is right, I have clearly failed in my judgement. But, I just can't see how so many guesses are in the 105 range. What did you come up with a score for him? I think that buck is incredible and I can't wait for the day I shoot a buck where the tips of the main beams are almost touching!
-
I'm seeing around 115ish. Do you have different angles? Hard to tell what the left g3has got going on. Great buck! I would be shocked if he doesn't gross score over 110. Beams are awesome, but hard to get a width from that pic.

Really ugly tree squirrel?

Make sure you donate that tag, especially if it's an early hunt! Thank you for your service

Bret is doing my coues buck from last year. That will be the sixth coues he has mounted for me and I couldn't be happier with the work. He definitely does a stellar job mounting coues deer.

Dusty, don't go away mad, just go away.

This was a set up my buddy and I came up with. Worked great and believe or not, between summer and winter rains held water year round. You'll have to forgive the shameless plug for my awesome dog Chloe. Back when she was a spring chicken, there wasn't a "camera run" she didn't go on. Initially, we put 10 or 15 gallons in it and that made it until the monsoons. I did however have to cover the majority of the top to prevent bears from taking a bath and pushing most of the water out of the tub.

looking for radios/tripod after boulder crushes old ones
gotcoues replied to Antler assassin's topic in Other Hunting Gear
Very sorry to hear about this situation, the picture you posted is really unbelievable. I also have a few extra pairs of radios I would be happy to give a pair away. They have been sitting in the closet for years (decent motorolas). It wouldn't be putting me out in any way shape or form, I would be happy to send you a pair. -
Excellent! That is great, got your bow back and orchestrated the bust! Thieves are worthless scum.

Read the comments... Liberalism is a disease no doubt. Hopefully America will find it's own cure someday.

I have never found a boot that I would actually recommend until a couple years ago. I will the second the Irish Setter Havoc boot. By far, the most comfortable footwear I have ever owned. The fit is like they were custom designed to my feet. If your scouting year round and hunting alot, I would say your going to get about a year out of the boots. It doesn't matter how many miles or how much weight I carry, my feet feel great the next day and during the outing. I prefer un-insulated boots year round, unless sitting a treestand in winter. I recently purchased four pairs (EE wide) from Sportsmans on Clearance for about $70 a pair, normally I believe they were $180. I'm worried they aren't going to offer the un-insulated version any longer. I did get a pair of Danner Pronghorns as a gift from my wife and they were terrible IMO, very uncomfortable fit for me. Otherwise, my experience is with lower end boots and they all sucked.

I agree, but there are so few sheep tags, I don't the moral would improve over time as it might for elk and antelope. I whole heartly believe it will tighten up the average wait time for every hunt while still leaving the chance to get lucky so people get right back in. It might shift some people into easier to draw hunts after drawing a premium tag as well to improve weights times and balance things out. I definitely think all BPs for every draw should be squared and I have liked that concept ever since it was explained to me yrs and yrs ago. The AZ draw is a very well thought out process. If you don't really know how it works, I guess complicated could be a word used to describe it. But, I believe it is a very logical and fair system that could use a little improvement based on identical principles already in use.

I think Sheep tags should not be brought up in this conversation. Your more likely to die before you get one and that will not change no what what system is used unless you are close to max points and have the years to wait. Too many applicants for so few tags. I do not apply for premium tags anymore unless it is first choice ONLY, with my second choice being a more viable option to improve my draw odds. If a person has 10 bps he would get 100 assigned random numbers and he would get to keep the lowest one which would be his place in line for the draw. A person with 3 bonus points would only have 9 random numbers assigned to them and again, they would get to keep their lowest number for their place in line for the draw. A huge advantage goes to the higher BPs rather than the current system that goes one for one on your BPs for the amount of numbers you are assigned. Squaring the bonus points would simply award a higher % of random drawn tags to the higher end BP people and a lower % of random tags to the people in the lowest BP count. One good point to keep in mind is people with higher bonus points are applying for much higher quality hunts and/or premium tags and this change won't affect the easier to draw elk tags hardly at all. People will still draw their late rifle bull tags, late archery bull tags and cow tags with the average wait time being about the same. Everybody has heard stories about the guy who has drawn early archery bull over and over and over like it was nothing and the guy who has waited over 6 or even 8 years for the same tag. Squaring points would simply put, make those stories harder to find. Sitting out for one year only helps the chances for hunts you can draw every other year or possibly 3rd year consistently (not many people are complaining about these draw odds anyway) and it would obviously decrease revenue by losing $13 for every application fee by any person who is required to sit out. The bonus point system is an excellent system that rewards people who are unlucky and continually improves their odds. Squaring the bonus points would just strengthen the concept and give more weight to the people who have waited the longest or are in the "unlucky" club. A good example is I was out hiking w a "bear enthusiast" this weekend. We both applied for the same bear tag. I drew it on my first try with only a hunter education BP, so I had one try for my random number which decided my place for the bear tag drawing. He told me he had 4 BPs going into the same draw which would have given 16 random numbers and he would of kept the lowest one to use in this particular hunt draw if we squared bonus points. With the current system he had 4bps so he got 4 random numbers assigned and got to keep the lowest one for the same bear tag draw. Instead of his odds being 4 to 1 against me, wouldn't it had been more fair for him to have 16 to 1 odds against me considering he has waited 4 years already and I haven't waited at all??????? Please learn about squaring points and let's give a helping hand to the unlucky ones!!!!! They truly deserve the tags and have waited the longest.

Maybe I came across as too harsh. I do like covert cams and I own 7 or 8 total. They are reliable and definitely good cams. Even with the remote, I like the assassin better than the MP6 which you mentioned you like that particular cam. With that being said, my only real complaint is the number of false pics even on a low setting is too high. None of my other coverts had this problem. The other people I know with the MP6 ALL have way too many "wind pics". Nothing worse than a back country cam taking enough false pics to fill up your card on a windy month and be worthless the rest of the time until you return for the "gold" and find out the cam let you down. I've left cams out for up to 6 months and my other coverts would perform flawlessly and take my pic when I walk up after all that time in the field.

Technically, you are correct, there will be some added "lucky factor" to the people who are applying. But, it will have no effect on the average wait time for a premium tag, if the average wait for early archery bull is say 5 to 7 yrs, how will waiting one yr change that? This thread is about squaring bonus points. The G & F obviously needs MORE revenue, not less. At best, that idea will succeed in decreasing revenue/increasing tag prices. I believe the concept of squaring bonus points will slightly decrease the average wait time on PREMIUM hunts by increasing the odds at the upper end and decreasing odds at the lower end. Honestly, even squaring points could decrease revenue because it tells the guy at the bottom you have less off a chance to get lucky and it may be a deterrent. Why should people who want to hunt elk in the lowest demand hunts that most of us don't even want, have to sit out. Makes no sense and I don't want the government to decide what is premium, and make people sit who drew a "premium" . That should be reserved for the people who apply to decide, supply and demand. Also, once "they" latch on to the word premium, those hunts will surely double in price! Just take a look at NM Again, sitting out will achieve nothing
-
Sitting out doesn't make sense for people who just want to hunt cow elk archery. Again you can get an elk tag every yr or at least every other year, it makes zero sense to sit out of the draw and that is a loss of revenue which means tag prices would have to go up. BAD IDEA Just improve the system we have. Everyone still has a chance, and we can put the bonus point system to work for those who deserve it the most. My friend who got me into hunting almost 17 years ago has been applying for sheep since long before the BP system was put in place. "The original crew" got screwed because they were awarded 1 bp along with people who were applying for their first year. The beginning of BPs should have started with points based on actual yrs applying. Anyway, now my bud is in 50s, has one less than max, because his app was rejected one year, and doesn't even know if he'll draw his sheep tag while he is still healthy enough to hunt sheep. If everyone's points were squared tomorrow, I'll bet his odds wouldn't change a whole lot because there are soooooo many people with massive points for sheep. What it would do is see these peoples odds overall increase vs a 10yr old applying for the first time. Let's face it, not everyone is going to draw a sheep tag, but why shouldn't the people who applied the most have a HUGE increase in chances over the people just starting to apply.
-
Average Joe, That will have zero affect on ANY premium hunts and will ONLY affect draws with higher percentages which no one is complaining about. It would stop the luckiest of all lucky people, the ones who draw back to back early archery bull hunts, now they "the lucky ones" will only draw every other yr haha
-
4falls, I have to disagree with your your logic a bit on this one. If your applying for hunts with a 40-80% chance of getting drawn, then this change wouldn't affect you as much (IE TJ). Deer and Elk have plenty of hunts that are easier to draw. I believe this system would have the most affect on premium tags only. With that being said, all goat, sheep and Goulds tags are premium tags. So these along with the Dec WT, Kaibab, Strip, premium elk and so on would be most affected. I hardly feel the guy who drew antelope or early rifle bull last year are "getting punished", just ask the guys with 18-24 points about "punishment".

I believe squaring bonus points would be a big improvement. Let's face it, bonus points are meant to improve people odds at the top, but they fail to do enough IMO. If points were squared it would render the people at the bottom with little chance to draw premium tags, but they would still HAVE A CHANCE. To square points is to simply times your BPs by themselves. 4 would equal 16 10 would equal 100 and so on. I think it is the right way to go.
