First--all law enforcement should act in a professional manner. That being said--we must remember that EVERY stop is a potential life and death situation. When they KNOW that there is a weapon present, the alert level automatically will rise along with the apprehension. That is totally understandable. Still--professionalism must be maintained. But we must also NEVER give reason to escalate the apprehension. I'm not sure--not being a lawyer-that just being out there in the deset is just cause for a search. That is totally a personal call on that as to allow it or not. If you really feel that this officer acted in an unreasonable manner--I would certainly report his behavior. I question, in my own mind, hasseling an obvious citizen in this manner. While scouting down there--all of the ones that I have encountered have been extremely friendly and alerted me to the fact that they had spotted some wetbacks in the area and to be aware. Conversly--I reported a few that I saw and they actually let me know that they had apprehended them. BOB

Second chance to pay tag fees for any one who applied online
ichiban43 replied to MT. CAT's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
The cashiers check/MO was only for online apps. Filling out the app is a little more complicated than getting a cashiers check or MO-- I do see the 2nd chance premis there. But there is a cut off date for that too.--just have a hard time agreeing with the 2nd chance on the cashiers checks.. AZGFD was on top of the online draw--and thus the cancellation. I think the cashiers check thing was to avoid a bunch of bounced checks which would slow the process. -

Rules are rules--I know that they screwed up with the online draw--but they made it VERY clear about NO PERSONAL CHECKS in more than one correspondence. Maybe they will now let you send in an application a week after the deadline and it will be just fine.. Fair is fair!! I went down and got my cashiers checks and got them mailed off in plenty of time. -
Too many hunts need some help
ichiban43 replied to DCMHunter's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Ok--This yr turkey hunting up there--I saw tons of deer just out of Jacob Lake about 3-4 miles down the 282 road--although there is quite a herd that water & graze right there you can't hunt right there--but could set up nearby. Last year--I turkey hunted out behind De Motte park out to the west and then down south off of the FS 206 and took roads out towards the canyon (W) Again--tons of deer. There are several water holes in the area. There is no more joy in life than having your kid bag a deer. I was there when my oldest dtr bagged her first--but have always lamented the fact that I was not able to be with my youngest dtr when she got hers. I had to work and my bro took her out. Good luck and enjoy your time.--BOB -
Muzzeloader Question
ichiban43 replied to azbownunter22's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
Geez--you guys make me feel old--actually I am--In CO where I have muzzy hunted since the early 90's--no sabot's--no pelletized powder and no scopes. I have sidelock percussions--both CVA--one is a 50 cal Hawken that I put together as a kit and it is fairly accurate out to 100 yds. No MOA for sure. I have killed several deer with it. I used Buffalo Bullets in both 385 & 420 gr with 90 & 100 gr of Pyrodex. I also have a 54 cal with a 1:32 twist that I shoot 390 & 425 gr Buffalo bullets with 95 & 100 gr of Pyrodex. With the faster twist is seems to be more accurate than the 50. The only drawback with the 54 is the lack of the two-set trigger (double trigger) I love that feature on my Hawken. I have killed Deer, Elk & Antelope with it. My bro has an inexpensive ($150) CVA inline he bought just after 911--due to the hassle of taking on the airline back then, he had it shipped to my house. He uses the lighter Buffalo bullet with 85 gr of pyrodex. Very accurate piece and he too has bagged a few Elk with it. He has a T/C Renegade that wouldn't shoot worth a dang as a 54--so he put a 50 cal Green River barrel on it--and it is great too. The best thing about Muzzy hunting is NO PRESSURE!!! Enjoy--BOB -
Draw Results Available Online

Add effective to your list--very effective in the right location. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/

The following was copied & pasted from the AZGFD website. "Despite the changes in the draw application process, there will be no effect on the draw itself or how it is conducted. Draw results will be available online at azgfd.gov no later than Aug. 10, and hunt permit-tags for successful applicants will be mailed out no later than Aug. 10." Using a little deductive reasoning--I would tend to think that the results will be available prior to that date. BOB

Ditto on the rumor. They are probably cashing your checks so they can invest your money and then sent a warrant back to you if you don't draw and keep the earnings.
-
If they hadn't stopped the online process and extended the application period for two weeks--we would have had the results by now--you DO believe that-- don't you?

Take a sturdy cardbox--for lack of anything else and notch it to firmly cradle the gun. Put some rocks or bricks in the box for more stability. Set up a target 25yds from the muzzle. Take out the bolt. Look through the barrel and move the box or target or both to center the bull as best you can. Then, without moving ANYTHING, adjust the scope crosshairs to that location. May sound crude--but that is one way that it was done before bore sighting equipment. Will get you on paper for sure.

I start at 25yds with all calibers. BOB

Check out the trajectory chart that I posted earlier in this thread. I learned to site in a rifle this way so many years ago--I won't go there. Then "re-learned" it in the Army with the M-14 (308 Win). it has never failed me. I picked up a laser boresighter and love it. It beats the old cradling the gun in notches in a cardboard box and looking down the through the barrel. Trying to adjust the scope without moving the rifle is frustrating. For any of you interested in "long range" shooting, the July issue of NRA's American Hunter has a fairly good article on it by Ian McMurchy--he has done other articles too-Google him up if your interested. A good read and has some informative techniques.

Yes--the letter says that they will contact each recipient. Sounds as if they aren't sure how to handle this problem, given the answer over the phone. This issue needs to resolved ASAP. Luckily--I put in by myself. Have fun Ya'll!!!

My old standby handload for the venerable '06 was 58 gr of H4831 with a 150 gr spitzer. Shot great--but did have some cycling problems in the Rem 742 semi-auto.

That is a CASHIERS check BTW. No personal checks. That will ease some of the cluster that is on the way

OH!!--Forgot--Senior Moment!! That is for a 150gr bullet. Below is a link to a very good chart also. http://www.chuckhawks.com/rifle_trajectory_table.htm

Go back down to 25yds and shoot 3 shot groups until you are dialed in perfect at this range. Let the barrel cool between shots. This will put you 2 1/4" hi @100 yds---1 1/4" hi & 200yds and 1 1/2" lo & 250 yds. But save time and powder by starting with 25yds. Make sure you have a super firm rest NEVER rest the barrel on anything, take any slack out of the trigger, take a deep breath and hold it before you SQUEEZE. Then go ahead and shoot at your longer ranges to be sure.

Got one in the snail mail today. Can't wait to see what next year brings for an encore. Not blaming AZGFD for anything--they may have headed off a huge catastrophe. Hope it goes well for the next draw--no matter what they do.

Is this what you are looking for? http://www.chuckhawks.com/primers.htm
-
Yup!--Any brand mag primer will work and interchange. Some people seem to have a preference. Personally--I've used CCI mag primers exclusively in my 308 N0rma mag for years with fine performance.

Thanx again Scott--BTW--I'm Bob1 elsewhere.

I never got one either.--Maybe it went into my spam folder and I didn't recognized it. What was the actually Email address it came from? Could somebody please post that info ? I can track it down that way. Thanx--BOB

Was up there last week--saw tons of deer--some will have some good racks. Take 67 S-1/4 mi--turn right. About 1/2 mile or so--just past the Forest service center--take the left to Jacob Lake. Go past the lake to the woods. Saw 10 deer there every morning drinking & grazing--but it is posted. There is the a jct of 282 & 682. Up 682 --.3 (3/10) miles on the right is a small meadow that contains a spring. I saw several deer in there and one budding buck. Back at the jct--go out the 282 about 3 1/2 miles or so. You will get into a bunch of very young growth. Looks like a reforestation project after an old fire maybe. Saw LOTS of deer in there, incuding another real nice budding buck. Another spot is 3 mi down the 282 and take a little dink road to the left. It goes down to a water hole and opens up into a long meadow. Looked promising. I was in there scouting around in the middle of the day--saw nada--but there were tracks around the waterhole. Good Luck!! BOB
