This is how I find places to eat in unfamiliar country--Google maps--it gives you a starting point for more research. El Rancho is very good. There is/was a steak house just as you make the turn onto 260 from the Beeline --it was up on a hillside sort of and there is an RV park up there also. Can't remember the name--it wasn't too bad as I recall. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

It used to be an old metal military canteen, 1/2 box of shells, knife, 10' nylon rope, fixed 6 bushnell bino, mountain money, pby sandwich and a tag. Hunt all day- never got lost and shot a dam nice buck. Fireman carry it back to the truck drink a few beers and pass out at 7:00pm because your dead and you did not eat enough food that day The 1st stuff in the pack is day one--day 2 is listed below that. I made this out of one I bagged in CO with a Muzzleloader--real morphadite--was his by a vehicle--really twisted antlers. Just a different idea of what you can do with those sheds. I'm sure you all know most of the uses--but this one was really different. Did it upside down.--BOB

Yes--OUCH--I have shot a 30-338 on an '03 Springfield since the mid 60's--AKA 308 Norma Mag using 165 Nosler Partitions with 79 gr H4831. Great results on both deer & elk--oh yeh--a loooong shot at an antelope too !!!!

Doug-- Welcome to the site. May I ask where in CA you have the misfortune of residing?--Just kidding!! I am a No CA refuge--Westwood--way up in Lassen county. We don't consider SF ar Sacto No CA--but more central. They used to call us "Superior CA"--but they looked up Superior in Webster's and quit calling us that. It is a well kept secret--but there is some great archery deer hunting in that neck of the woods--prdominately Blacktail, Blacktail/Mule cross.

Got this Email just a bit ago from a hunting site in CO. What can be scary is that one state pulls some bonehead move and other states follow suit. Watch what comes out of the CA ban on lead Ammo. Price good sheds on the internet--people will do anything to make an easy buck. State to consider shed antler issue at January meeting Published by Colorado Hunting Club under Hunting/Outdoors Misc., DOW News The Colorado Wildlife Commission is scheduled to make a final determination regarding shed antler collecting on public lands in the Gunnison Basin at its meeting on Jan. 10, 2008. The meeting will be at the Colorado Division of Wildlife Hunter Safety Building, 6060 Broadway, Denver. The meeting is open to the public and starts at 8:30 a.m. Collecting of shed antlers for commercial use has grown significantly during the last five years. There are concerns that antler collectors disturb deer and elk on their winter range, and Gunnison Sage Grouse during their breeding period from mid-March to mid-May. The issue to consider restrictions on shed antler collecting was brought to the wildlife commission through a citizen’s petition by the Gunnison Basin Sage Grouse Strategic Committee. DOW staff has been meeting with the committee and antler collectors during the last six months in an attempt to develop an agreement on this issue. At the November 2007 wildlife commission meeting, DOW staff presented three alternatives for consideration: 1) All publicly owned lands in Game Management Units 54, 55, 551, 66 and 67 should be closed for collection of shed antlers from sunset to 9 a.m. from March 15 to May 15. 2) All publicly owned lands in GMUs 54, 55, 551, 66 and 67 should be closed for collection of shed antlers from March 15 to May 15. 3) All publicly owned lands in GMUs 54, 55, 551, 66 and 67 should be closed for collection of shed antlers from Feb. 1 to May 15. The wildlife commission will discuss the issue; public comment also will be taken during the meeting.

I saw on the CO DOW site that they are thinking of banning shed hunting near Gunnison because of the disruption to game in the area. http://wildlife.state.co.us/NewsMedia/Pres...sp?PressId=4702

Makes you wonder how many of them removed the windpipe from those Elk. Nothing spoils quicker.

They make a biodegradable engineers tape--I'll ask my buddy where he got it. Another hint--I use RV toilet paper. Dissolves much faster.

Awesome job--he needs his own "Youth Hunting "show on TV. What an inpiration to other young hunters no pun intended Christian) he could be.

Visualize this--What if Tyson were a sniper caliber rifle shot and chose to utilize those skills at that time! WOO HOO!!!

I had two spotted fawns and a small forked horn come into a spring i was hunting 3 times during an archery hunt one year. My daughter and I watched two does and two fawns being chased by a coyote while out muzzy hunting. Somehow one of the does was able to turn the tables and she chased that sucker for almost a mile --taking swipes at him whenever she got close enough. My daughter and I kept hoping that she would connect and send him a$$ over tea kettle..

I was in there last summer. It did look like good country. We stayed at the Universal RV Park in Arivaca with some friends. I scouted 36A while I was down there--the other half panicked about the illegal situation (I saw them every day while scouting) and so as not to make her worry--I ate the tag. I have the 36b Nov tag this year. Will be going come H-ll or High Water!!! I only went to the boat ramp and didn't know there was a FS campground there. Did you happen to see it?--If so--what was it like--the usual?

Sad to say, I picked up the Sierra Vista/Nogales Ranger District F/S map. I have used F/S maps for more years than I care to remember covering almost every western State. This is without a doubt the sorriest excuse for a map that I have ever seen. By a good magnifying glass to go with it. Better yet--invest in a computer mapping program of your choice. I have both All topo Maps and topo USA. National Geographic is excellent from what I hear also. Good Luck--BOB I went to that ranger station on a Saturday and they were closed. I'm still looking for one of those maps. I do have topo USA on my computer and GPS so I 'll be fine. Thanks for the advise... Tom Tom, This is where I get a lot of my maps--http://www.publiclands.org/home.php?SID= They have decent prices and fast service. It is neat because it lists all of the maps you need for a specific unit. The other alternative would be the Ranger station --as you tried or pay the xtra $$$ and go to Wide World of Maps. BOB

ICGrey Ghost-- Here are some possibilities if you fear for your camp being looted--as I do. I have the Nov tag also and I may stay at the Caballo Loco RV park as I somehow drew a 37A javelina tag. I have stayed at the Universal Ranch RV Park too--it is good also and Jen Taylor (camp host--if she is still there) says they never have problems with illegal's. I may stay there and bag a deer and then relocate into 37A later. http://www.freewebs.com/wildhorsecc/ http://www.universalranch.com/index.html http://www.go-arizona.com/Arivaca-Lake-Campground/ Good Luck-- BOB

I have heard that people raise the same question about Mountain Lions in California...... Yeh--We called it "Shoot it & Shovel it" There is a phone # where you can contact the BP. Maybe the local County Mounties or DPS might pass the message--some controversy there though. There are plenty of BP running around too. I reported a few when I was down there last year.
-
I was headed N on 286 last year and saw several walking N on the highway--they had to be looking to get caught--So I kindly obliged them and turned them into a BP at Three Points. Saw some walking through down town Arivaca also--right by a bunch of NG guys grabbing lunch. They were all over in the desert in 36c--I've got Nov 36b this year--should be interesting.

Of course, if we look at whitetail deer around the country, those types of areas are prime spots. In the western states to the north of us, the river corridors harbor a big chunk of the whitetail populations I'm new to Coues hunting--but I am 1 for 1--got lucky. Do Coues actually act like full blown WT? Or because of their desert type habitat in many areas--have they developed different habits?

I understand what you are saying as far as the apprehension part because there had been a gun in the truck, but when we saw them coming, we pulled over, not waiting for them to turn on their lights, not something a drug runner would do. i guess i can only explain it so well and the attitude he was giving, one of those you had to be there things. and having a gun in the truck is not reasonable cause to search, they either have to see something that is in PLAIN view, or place us under arrest before they can search the vehicle without a warrant. but like others have stated, most all of the BP guys arereally friendly, just happened to run into a sour one this time I'm in no way defending this BP's attitude--I have been hassled unreasonably by law enforcement too. Some guys are just JERKS--the uniform and badge has gone to their heads. For some who get into the field--it is not about public service--but POWER. And I'm not talking out of my Bu--. I have a degree in police science and criminal justice--I know many in law enforcement! Maybe the guy wanted an AM and his wife/girlfriend shut him down--who knows!!
