Thanks for the comments! We hiked up steep mountains way before light every morning to get away from roads & people & it paid off. Both of these bucks were taken spot & stalk & a couple of miles from the truck. They're not what some might call the "big boy's" but they're hard earned! Great times with friends & 2 great bucks! Thanks,Bret

Thanks for posting the story & pic's for us Jim....sorry I wasn't fast enough for ya!...lol.... Yes, it was a very special day that I have waited 11 years for....& it was worth the wait! I'm so proud of the hunter & young man Jakob has become. Around day 2 I was getting a little discouraged & Jakob told me...."I'm having a great time dad & a getting a buck would just be a bonus"....that's my boy. Thanks for all the comments we really appreciate it........Bret & Jakob

Welcome to the site Pat & congrats on the elk tag! Bret

Casey, I don't think the color of the tail has to do with age but more so with genetics...my buck was a mature deer probably 3-4 years old. I have seen a few others with red tails & they were also mature bucks 80"-90"...& yes I can't wait to mount him up. Bret

Thanks for all the comments about my "velvet" buck. I agree with what some of you said about the warmer than normal temp's having alot to do with all the velvet hanging around...because my buck was big bodied, had all his "parts", & appeared healthy. I've always wanted a velvet coues...just never thought it would be with a rifle Here's a pic to show the rest of him...he had a really cool "red" tail also. Bret

Here is the buck COOSEFAN & younghunter are talking about....sorry for the delay. I got him around 9:30 Monday morning 10-29-07. I glassed him up as he was heading over a ridge away from me at about 275 yds.. I could see that he was a shooter & had good mass but that was it. I quickly went down the ridge I was on & stalked up the other side to the last place I saw him. As I peeked over the edge I caught movement down below me to my left & could see it was "a" buck. As soon as I dropped the bipod legs on my .243 & got set up for the shot he stopped to look back in my direction...BOOM! I connected right behind the shoulder at 165 yds. & he was down! As I approached my buck I was pleasantly surprised with a bonus. Not only was he a beautiful 3x3....he was in FULL VELVET! Congratulations to all the successful hunters...Bret

Congratulations to your son! All the comments about the velvet are good....but you will not be able to inject at this point. You could have it stripped & sent out to have artificial velvet put on...but this process can be pricey & it will look very neat & clean...not common for this time of year. I would just paint a coat of antler in velvet tan over the whole rack & let dry for a week...then wash it off & fluff the velvet with air or a soft brush. This will preserve the velvet & bug proof it....you can get this tan on line. Hope this helps

My 10 year old son Jakob & I went dove hunting last weekend & found a fox instead. We spotted him at the base of a tree while we were driving to our dove area. We were able to slip out, get Jakob set up about 25 yds. from the fox, & he made a great shot with his single shot .410...it was awesome!
