Seems like any more when i try to make long range plans for a hunt some thing always comes up to change them. Well when i made plans to hunt with alot of friends for four days in January my plans were changed with the passing of my Uncle. I called my friends to let them know and i would not be to camp until early Saturday morning so i could spend time needed with family. January, 12th 2013 and the alarm sounds at 3:30am. Up and out the door and head for camp by 4am. As i head to camp on the 2 hour drive i reflect in my mind at all the times i remember my Uncle taking me hunting and fishing as a boy and before i know it im at camp. What a ride as a boy i had with him. As the sun begins to come up i am dressed and headed to my honey hole for pigs and it is 15 degrees. Finally nice cold weather to archery hunt in. I Begin to see Doe's it seems like on every hill side and i proceed to my glassing spot only to find three different hunters already on the hill sides. Crap what now. As i try to decide what im going I notice the wind has changed and is now comming from my back. So i say what the heck and walk over the edge of the hill into the wind and begin glassing the sunny slopes. I catch a Doe running down a hill side about 500 yards away. As i focus my attention to the area i catch a flash of some thing under a mesquite tree and there he is. His antlers are flashing as he taunts the Doe he is pushing around. I say to myself, "Dang that is a good buck". I sit and study the terrain and make a game plan for the stalk. I pick out a grassy knoll with a small mesquite on it that looks to be about 80 yards from the buck.I tell myself if i can make it there with out being busted i will have a chance at this bruiser. The stalk is on. Down the hill through the deep bottom until i get to the bottom of the knoll i want to be on. I pull a arrow out of the quiver and knock it. I wait a couple of minutes before i start my way up to the top very slow and quite. I settle next to the mesquite tree and scan for the deer. I spot the Doe at 120 yards and making her way straight to me. As she gets to 80 yards she heads down the knoll in front of me and pops out at 60 yards broadside. Perfect if only the buck follows which i have not seen again since i got to the knoll. She feeds back in to the brush and i glimps another deer following so i get ready and draw. Doe. What the heck i only seen one before. She feeds on into the bruch as the other did at 60 yards. I continue to study the brush for movement and another Doe steps into the opening that i didnt know was there. My paitence are getting thin when i see the huge antlers comming through the brush and draw my bow. The buck is walking with his nose straight out behind the last Doe at a steady walk when he enters the opening and i settle the pin and release. I hear the chua of the broadhead hitting the deer and he spins and heads back to where he came from on the hill and looks back to see what just happend. As i look at him through the binos i see no blood on him and he goes over the hill. I go to the spot where he was standing and the Does are still there looking at me from 30 yards. They turn and head toward his direction as i begin to look for signs of blood. There is my arrow and covered with blood. I go to where i last seen the buck and are to big puttles of blood and i begin to get very nervous. I follow the blood over the hill and through several bottoms before i find him piled up under a mesquite tree. As i walk up to this beautiful animal all i can think about is how i was introduced first to archery hunting as a boy by my Uncle. I say a prayer to how blessed and privleged i am to continue the sport i love. Go Bless you Uncle James. RIP.
