    best all around tripod set up

    The Pistol Grips ( to me ) are too touchy and jump around when you release the tension with heavy bino's or a spotter on top. Using a "Pan-Head" attachment you never have to deal with that.......just set the tension knobs perfectly and you won't have to do anything but push the binos' around where you want em'! Like I said before, I actually have grown accustom to using my nose to move the binos' around this way allowing me to keep my hands in my pockets on cold days! If money isn't a problem, then I would highly reccomend buying the "Jim White Tripod Head"! You can get it here on this site. Here is the link to it in the store........... http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/tripods_adaptor.htm

    best all around tripod set up

    There are gonna be a bunch of opinions on this.......but I will tell you what I think is the best For the legs you want the "Outdoorsmans" tripod in either the medium or long version. You can get an extension tube for the medium tripod at a later date should you need it, or just get the longer one now. I don't like "Pistol Grip" heads 'cause they make me all jumpy and frustrated! I like a smooth pan with nothing more than a little pressure from my nose for the side to side, and just a little nudge from my finger for the up and down adjustments, and that is why I only use either the "Jim White Pan Head" or the "Outdoorsmans new Pan Head". The only "Pistol Grip" head that I've liked is the one from the Outdoorsmans, cause' it was WAY lighter than the Bogen Pistol Grip! Jim White has a new "Panning Attachment" that fits below any Pistol Grip and makes it ALOT more fluid and uses less effort when doing a side to side movement. My thoughts are that you should buy the best lightweight tripod you can afford because you will use this one more, but I would definitely buy a cheaper Heavy Duty tripod also if you plan on using a heavy spotter or for when it's windy. The Bogen tripods are great for sturdiness and holding up to a hard wind, but they are heavy. Best if luck to ya, JIM>

    5B Rifle Bull (late Oct.)

    Hey guys, I think I now have an idea about what the 5B hunt is like......... I found out today that....... - I can buy a landowner, unit wide ARCHERY BULL tag in 5B for $500.00 - I can buy a landowner, unit wide ARCHERY BULL tag in 16A for $6,200.00 The rifle hunt in 5B is only going for around $1,000.00 and is more like $9,000.00 in 16A I think the huge difference in price for landowner tags might be an obvious clue as to how good or bad this hunt may be! I told my buddy about the prices for landowner tags and he took the hint and unfortunately is gonna burn his tag and eat the almost $800.00 mistake! I hate seeing a tag go to waste, but it's his choice I guess I did hear that the unit has some good bulls but they can be hard to find and scouting is a must! It would be expensive and difficult for a CA guy to accomplish that. Thanks anyways guys! JIM>
  7. Hey guys, out of all my family and friends we ended up with 1 Late 2B Muley tag and 1 5B Rifle Bull tag (by mistake)! I haven't been able to check yet, but I think the 5B hunt is the last week of October. My buddy messed up and used last years reg's when applying and unfortunately for him the hunt codes changed! I have NO experience in 5B and don't personally know anyone that does! I don't want to know where to go, I'm just looking for general info for him. I just am wondering what the hunt is like or what the unit is like? What class of bulls to expect? Is it all cluttered up with private land and access issues? Anything or anywhere to avoid? I'm sure I'll answer most of these questions on my own once I can access maps and such.......just curious what you guys may think! Thanks, JIM>

    5B Rifle Bull (late Oct.)

    I didn't even know there was a north or south That just goes to show how much I know about that part of NM! I just know that my buddy drew this hunt......... ELK-1-154 I don't have the regulations available to me right now and I cannot get on the website.....so maybe one of you guys can give me the details about that hunt code? When I checked the results and saw he drew this hunt, I had another buddy check the regs over the phone and I thought he said it was for a Rifle Bull hunt in 5B for Oct. 27 - 31 ? Is this correct? Is there a distinction between North and South? Thanks guys

    night fishing

    Canyon Lake is probably the closest to ya, but there may be some urban lakes....I just can't think of any. I know that some of the canals near you have fish in em! Not exactly the best scenery around the canals but fishin' is fishin' I guess Probably your best bet ( especially for night fishing so you don't get caught ) is to sneak into one of the golf courses in Gilbert or down towards Sun Lakes and you'll most likely catch a ton of fish! Use hotdogs if you do...they've worked at all the golf course or community lakes I've ever snuck into Jorge G.

    FS: Gift Card to

    I agree.......when I first read coues7's post, it never crossed my mind that he may be trying to scam someone! He should have just worded it differently.......like for instance; "hey guys, can someone help me out by trading cash for this card?" instead of trying to sell it as if it were merchandise Hey Scott.....despite all this, if you can't get rid of it.....I'll give ya $73.45 for it...... AND I'll pick it up so you don't have to waste a stamp on it!

    let the rumors begin!!!

    WHAT A PAIN IN THE REAR today has been trying to get results!!! Finally got everyone checked and I can't remember when I've seen more RED than I have today! I've got a funny one for you guys...........I had a friend from CA apply for the 16A Early rifle bull hunt and told him to put it first choice................I checked the draw results and was excited to see he drew his first choice.............UNTIL I noticed the numbers didn't seem right.............he put hunt code ELK-1-154 first choice........I soon found out it is actually a later rifle bull hunt in 5B I don't have last years reg's but I'm pretty sure that ELK-1-154 "WAS" the hunt code for the trophy hunt in 16A......."LAST YEAR" I get to call him tomorrow to give him the good news that he drew his "FIRST CHOICE" I will then ask him to break out the reg's he used when he applied ( he used Paper Apps ) and ask him to read off what hunt "ELK-1-154" is..........then I will ask him what the freakin' date is on the front cover!!!!!!!!! Does anyone have the '06 Regs handy? I would like to know for sure what hunts ELK-1-154 and ELK-3-119 were last year....I already know what they are this year and I have never been in either unit ( 5B or 9 ).......anybody have any experience in 5B on the late Oct. bull hunt? Thanks, JIM>

    let the rumors begin!!!

    Well...I've got a rumor for ya.........just heard from a couple guys that had the CC hit for $1.00 today. There were 3 guys on the same Antelope app using the one CC and it got hit for 3 separate $1.00 charges. They think NM is pre-running the card to verify it's active? Anyone else seen this today on their CC? I know we haven't had any hits Best of luck to you all JIM>

    Unhappy with my new coues mount

    I agree with you the eyes aren't right. The taxi, regardless of which form they use, will build up the muscles around the eye with clay and set the glass eyes into place at this point. I think it looks like he built these eye muscles up too much and set the eyes in with a more forward angle than it should have been. They also use a hide paste which is like glue on the inside of the entire hide and this locks the hide down to the form.......with this all dried and the clay hardened, I don't believe it can be altered any more Aside from the eyes.....your taxi did a great job on everything else.......I think he did a great job on the ears........most guys don't seem to get those right....along with the eyes Great bucks......I'd be proud to have em on my wall!
  18. He guys....finally got out fishing agian last night and "FINALLY" caught some fish! I have always been a "finesse" style fisherman using light tackle and drop-shot techniques which I think is the reason I only catch small bass! So, my goal lately has been to catch big fish and I am now trying different tactics........and it worked last night. I know it's not a "lunker" but I was pretty stoked to finally hook into a fish that was larger than the normal "quarter-pounder"! Pops and I are heading to Alamo within the hour.....so hopefully we come back with more pictures thanks, JIM> I kept one of the little guys to show comparison to what I "normally" catch

    Got my September 2006 buck back

    Those are both beautiful bucks! From what I know, two taxidermists can be completely different from each other. Taxi's use different materials and have different ideas on what "looks" anatomically correct to "them" and incorperate that into their work. It is definitely appearant in your mounts that two different taxi's did the work. I think both mounts look great though......wish I had them on my wall JIM>

    Finally got the boat wet!

    Hey Bryson....I wish I had a pond close to home with Bass in it! Good luck and post some pics! kphunter......we did weigh him and you are good! It was 4 lbs..........I thought he was more like 10 lbs when I hooked em'...... then I thought he was about 7 lbs when he landed in the boat......then the dang scale told the truth Holding the little 1/4 pounder next to him really put 4 lbs into perspective though Huntn Coues.......I have no clue why you can't see any pic's I've posted recently.......I checked my photobucket accnt and it's all good. I'll post another pic here hopefully it turns out. Pops and I did go to Alamo on Sat. night and we KILLED EM'! We stopped counting, but had to have caught close to 60 Bass!!! I haven't had a fishin' trip like that in years! We didn't catch the HOGs but we did catch a ton of 1 pounders and this one I'm holding up is probably the biggest one we caught.....I didn't weigh it but it was probably around 2 pounds. We were just dragging imitation crawdads on jigheads down a windblown mainlake point. We bounced around trying to find where the bigger fish were and caught fish on all the points, but never hooked into anything really big. We didn't really care.....we were catching fish all night long and it never let up.......we just got tired and took a nap, caught a few more in the morning and went home on Sun. Great trip with Pops.....can't wait to go again! Here also is a pic of Pops' "little" fishin' boat..........when yer fishin' off a 20' Triton with a 225hp Merc., you at least "look" like you know what yer doin'! Cruisin' at close to 70 mph around the lake is almost more fun than catchin' fish Thanks, JIM>

    elk antler devil tines

    I tried to find some pics of the smaller bulls that have devil horns, but this is the only one that shows them well......this bull doesn't even break the 300" mark and he's got some great devil horns! It is very common for bulls to have devil horns where this bull was killed. JIM>

    elk antler devil tines

    Hey David....I honestly think it's genetics. There are areas that it is almost common place for bulls to have devil horns.....regardless of age. The devil horns develop just like the other tines and appear as the bull gets close to and throughout it's maturity. We have killed quite a few bulls with devil horns and a few were only 280" - 300" type bulls.....so I don't think you can use devil horns to feild judge a bulls maturity. My bro always says..." If he makes yer nipples hard........kill him!" I would follow this advice and just have fun and kill the first one that gets you all wound up! You already got a HOG on the wall! JIM>
  24. WHOOO HOOOOO! After reading your story I am PUMPED! I can't wait to get back down there.....Mexico is an amazing place for us "Coues Addicted" hunters! Congrats on one heck of a buck and thanks for the story! JIM>
