    Find the deer

Jorge Gonzales is some guy that hacks into my computer from time to time and says things that I would never say I don't take any responsibility for his posts I do think he's a little more level headed than that Dirk D. guy though Casey....I wonder about myself sometimes too, but thank you for wonderin' about me too, I appreciate it Someone once said...." To wonder about someone is to admire them". That's sweet Casey, thanks ( If Tony is trying to figure out where I got that quote from..........I made it up!) JIM>

    Find the deer

Casey.....even if you had Swaro's, we would still find something to poke fun at you with....yer a good sport...most of the time Them Leica's aren't any less of a bino compared to Swaro's.......it's just that it's YOU using them that we are aiming at BTW.......I like how small that one-man army issued mummy bag is Jorge Gonzales>

    Favorite Coues Taxidermist?

Thanks! I am very happy with Clay's work, and the Cat is one of the very best I have ever seen! The eyes on the deer all look the same in real life.... I think it is shadowing from the camera flash.... the cat looks better than the pic shows as well. The upper buck and the left on are the exact same pose.... left turn vs. right turn. Hey Gino.....those mounts make me sick.....with envy! One of these days I'll have some Coues mounts like that!! I freakin' love that double pedestal and love the bucks on it! The cat is fantastic and really shows off Clay's talents to those that know what to look for

    Getting excited to hunt!

I missed this topic somehow......but after readin through it, I think I want to be on this hunt also! Sounds like all the hard work is already being done by everyone else, so you need someone to sit in camp and eat Casey's cookin'! That'd be a job for me BTW.....Casey isn't joking about his cookin' skills.......he does make one heck of a dutch oven cobbler! As a warning though...he's not used to sleeping in his own bed alone, so you'll need to figure out which one of ya is willing to share a sleepin' bag with him!

    bear

Hey Elkman....that sucks big time dude!! Sorry to hear that! Do you mean 8:30 PM or AM? I'm guessing AM, and you guys are some fast bear skinners! I've butchered and packed a ton of bears and I think the fastest Ive done one is just less than an hour and that's not including caping the head out.....just skinning and boning and loading it all up on frames. It's hard but when I skin a bear I cut real close to the skin so as to leave most of the fat on the carcass and I don't fold it up inside a pack frame or back pack.....let it drape over the frame or pack so the heat isn't trapped. Same for when putting it on ice, I always skin the head out and fold ice between the layers of hide in the ice chest and keep the drain open so it can drain. I know this is all too late, but I have had slippage on some of our bears but never have lost an entire bear! We also never use plastic bags 'cause they hold in heat as well! It must have been noticeably bad if the Taxi didn't even want to try to send it off to the tannery.... but it's always worth a try I would think? You'll still have a huge skull and pics to admire JIM>

    Find the deer

I concur with Doug. That's the one I was talking about......." to the right of the bush in the middle of all the green grass"! Oh yeah, I got your PM Casey...........right back at ya
  13. Now that's weird! Maybe set up another camera focused on that one to see if he comes back? With all these problems, I'm thinking about setting two cameras on each set-up! Maybe put one higher up in a tree facing the one used for the critters.....that way you'll see anyone messing with your cams! Most people don't look higher in the trees, so I would think you wouldn't lose both unless it's at dark and the flash goes off! JIM>

    Find the deer

Casey.......does it even look like a deer? Or do we have to guess which barrel cactus is actually the deers butt in the air? My guess is it's the one next to the tree, to the right of the bush, in the middle of all the green grass

    Leupold TBC range finders

I've got an engineer buddy who has WAY TOO much time on his hands and he bought one just to prove that they aren't 100% accurate! He did just that, called Leupold, talked to a bigwig down there and told them what he found and they said they were aware of the problem and were working on it. I can't remember the exact problem but he told me to stay away from that product. JIM> I'll get the specifics if anyone is interested

    Yet another Bino question

along the same lines.........The 8x50 SLC's I gave to my sister were WAY brighter than the 10x50 SLC's! The clarity of those 8x50's was insane and I could glass as though it were daylight on full moon nights with em' When I'm glassing in the evening, I will have to take the 15's off the tripod and snap on my EL 8.5's as the sun goes down. Even though my 8.5's have a smaller objective lense than the 15's......they are alot brighter in very low light. This set-up is perfect in my mind.....I've got the best of both...small bino's with a wide feild of veiw and clarity in low light, and the large bino's that'll sniff out an antler tip or an eyeball in the brush at amazing distances with incredible clarity with good light!!! The 10x50 SLC's are by and far the best all around glass though if you have to settle on one pair......but I personally would never be in the Coues woods without my 15's My $.02, JIM>

    Antelope Hunt

I stay away from that place purely because of the chaos that usually takes place. Heard and seen way too many bad things about inconciderate hunters, biting bugs, rattlers and the heat......most of which you'll deal with anywhere though. I was sitting on my truck on the side of the black top road where the old dirt Fain rd joined it, taking pic's of several bucks during the first archery hunt. There were three bucks, the first was small and about 40 yrds, the second was nice and about 60 yrds and the third was a toad at exactly 100 yrds. A hunter pulls up in front of our truck, jumps out, runs up and asks if we are going to shoot.....I said no...he runs back, gets his bow, kneels down in front of our truck, ranges the distance and draws back with all the cars driving by and all of us watching this idiot! I thought for sure he was going for the small 40 yrd buck but noticed the severe angle of his aim and watched as the arrow flew over buck 1, over buck 2 and sunk into buck 3 at exactly 100 yrds! That buck ran a circle and fell over. The hunter was amazed that he made the shot! He said everyone at a certain bowshop told him to sight in a 100yrd pin and use it if he wanted to tag a goat! He said he had shot a few times at 100 yrds and was able to hit a hay bale a few times!!! To make it even worse, we had the guy jump in our truck to haul butt over to the other side of the feild to intercept another hunter who was running out to this guys dead goat! I thought for sure he was going to tag it before we could get there! We let the hunter out and he had to run up to this guy, who was now holding the horns, and put his tag on it as fast as he could! The hunter wasn't even the first person to touch his own trophy. There were several things that happened that day that made me upset, and unfortunately I don't think it's all that uncommon in those areas that get pounded by the majority That's why I only put in for Antelope in 42M Best of luck to you guys with 19A tags, hope you have the best hunt possible JIM>

Hey Bowsniper, is there an extra point on the right side of your buck that I can't see in the mount pic? It looks like there is in the live pic, but maybe I'm just seein' things. I know I've said it several times before, but fantastic buck and wonderful mount! JIM>

    Favorite Coues Taxidermist?

My favorite Taxi is a buddy of mine 'cause he puts way more time into the small details than alot of taxi's out there.....which also takes a bit longer, but it's worth it in the end. Because I have bombarded him with all my critters over the last couple of years, I decided to give a guy up in Flagstaff a try with my last Coues. He has my rack now and should have it back soon, but this is the first he's done for me so all I can do is cross my fingers it turns out as good as my buddy's work I also have been really impressed with Weller's from Tucson's work.......they have some incredible life-size Coues! Maybe one day I'll win the lottery and could afford a life-size Thanks, JIM> This is the one my buddy just did for me........
