A buddy was at Alamo last week and said the Talapia were shallow and all over the river end in the trees and the carp were rollin' up in the shallows all over! He was also at Pleasant yesterday AM and seen a few carp but they're not going crazy like they were at Alamo. If ya got any pic's post em' up.........I'm feelin' the itch to go fling some fiberglass!

    AES's Walt Nicoson passes away

Here is part of an email I recieved: Two years ago John K. wrote an article about Walt Nicoson whom he referred to as “The Arizona Elk Society’s Man of Steel”. Sadly on April 1, 2008 Walt passed away after a lengthy illness. Many of us are fortunate to have items that he created with that special blend of hardened steel and vivid imagination. I know most of us will remember his wide twirling mustache and big grin whenever we pause to think about him. Each year He took the time to conceive a vision, put it down on paper and then magically make it appear through his welding skills. His artwork will live for many years to come and wildlife and the AES were all the better for having known him. Walt continually donated his art as banquet items to and helped to raise thousands of dollars through his efforts. Walt was a huge part of the Arizona Elk Society and his love for the outdoors, kids and everyone he met was evident in everything he did. I suspect that now the gates to heaven will be adorned with Walt’s Elk Sculptures. Please join all of us in extending our condolences to his wife Cookie and their family. Walt did not want to have a funeral or any type of memorial service. He must have known that a service was not needed, we will always hold his memory dear to our hearts. In lieu of flowers and cards Cookie has asked that any donations be made to the Arizona Elk Society or RTA Hospice. Arizona Elk Society P.O. AES's Walt Nicoson passes away

Thanks for posting that on here Joe I've known Walt and his wife Cookie for many years. Walt was one of those guys that always had a huge smile and was always excited about something! As Joe mentioned, he definitely had amazing talent as an artist. Walt had a passion for the true essence of hunting and wildlife conservation and it showed in his involvement and dedication to the AES. I had the honor of hunting with Walt last year on his late 7W bull tag. It was an honor for me becuase he could have hunted with anyone but he wanted to hunt with me and I'll never forget that. His health was failing at that time but he made sure to get out with me and we had a blast during the short time we had. One thing he firmly believed in and always preached to the kids was that hunting should be about the experience and memories, and not just about the kill. I admired him for his beliefs and for his talents and above all else for always being positive and kind to everyone. I'll never forget the time I got to spend with him and am grateful for it and he will definitely be missed! Jim>

    70 mph sheds....

Been too busy tryin' to fill my "Hog Tag" to get up after some sheds, but I did make it up about 2 weeks ago for a day. The plan was to ride the mules for the day and we left my buddy's house right at daylight to make the 30 minute drive to our spot where another buddy was waiting for us with the mules. We were runnin' late so we were flyin' up the freeway chatting about our hopes of finding some sheds and excited about the day, knowing we'll at least get to spend the day horseback in some amazing country. I occasionally glanced out the window and on one of these glances I saw a couple tines sticking up......"SHED"!!! Dang near on two wheels and in a split second I had my northbound truck facing south and tearin' asphalt! I overshot the spot where I had seen the tines and as I pulled off the highway I looked over and there, in all it's glory, was the matching side about 50 yards from the first one I saw! We jumped out, feeling like we needed to grab em' before somebody else did, and investigated how fresh and how the antlers came to rest there. I first thought the bull jumped the fence, but it was obvious the bull ran from the highway towards the fence. Just before going over the left side fell and he cut hard right digging deep into the dirt. He then ran along the fence for about 50 yards, dropped the right side and cut left, finally jumping the fence! The blood wasn't dried yet and there were fresh splatters on the beams.......I've seen blood drops on the antlers before and always thought the bull stood there and looked at the antler, but appearantly that's not the case. The tracks were running and he still got blood on the antler on both....my guess now is that the blood splatters when it rips the hide that is embedded in the burrs? These sheds score close to 360" as they are with an inside of 40", and probably around 365" if not for the broken tines and tips......the best part is the 3" devil-tines makin' it a 7x7! We then proceeded to go ride 16 miles on the mules.........and found only 1 white spike antler You wouldn't beleive the amount of quad tracks and how well those guys cover the countryside. It's no joke that out of all those miles we rode, you would cross a quad track every 100 yards or less.......and that was 2 weeks ago! The elk had been pushed around a bunch and most pushed out because of this and that's what sucks. We rode up into the thick nasty rough stuff to get away from the pressure and it didn't matter........they had been there too! Oh well, thanks for checkin' out my "easy" sheds JIM>

    Coues or Mule Deer?

Yeah, I would definitely say the small set is Coues and the rest Muley also. That pink one probably was split on the G2 and really would have looked Muley then. Cool finds nonetheless! Thanks for posting! JIM>

    For all you Hog hunters..

A buddy of mine asked me to go slay some hogs yesterday, but I had to go to the banquet. I told him he was full of it and that it's all just rumors and there are no hogs out there.........here is his the pic I got showing the results of his little outing without me I got the phone pix last night and after the Easter stuff was done today, he and I headed back out....I had to see this for myself! We raced out there and both headed to different glassing points. The grass was pretty tall and I had just told him to watch for snakes..........then about 10 minutes after being separated I get a phone pix message from my buddy.......here's what he ran into right after leaving me....... So now I'm watching carefully where I put each step, but I make it to my point and start glassing. I found 3 separate herds of Javi's but no Hogs. Then just before dark my buddy yells on the radio that the Hogs are on the ridge north of me! I get all set up and try to find em' but I see nothing and it's not long before I won't be able to see through the scope. I range the opposite hill and realize I'm looking at over 600 yards and with fading light I really had no hope. The hogs ended up being one more canyon further and well out of my range, but it was exciting as heck to sit behind my rifle knowing that I may finally throw lead at one of these critters! Mark my words....."I will have blood on my hands by the end of next weekend...and a whole lotta bacon in the freezer too!" BTW.......PLEASE don't ask me where this is at..........and if you think you know, PLEASE keep it to yourself! Not my spot to share, just thought some of you would like to see that there really are some big ol' feral hogs out there! Thanks, JIM>

    Question for yall.

C'mon......don't start that again (just pretend you didn't read this reply Gino)

    San Carlos Crappie

Well, I'm not spending $100 on gas and two hours of driving to catch crappie then throw them back. They hardly put up any fight at all, even on the trout rod. Sometimes, you can't even tell if they are on your line or not. Them fish tacos we had last night tasted dang good though. I'd spend $100 to go catch a bunch of crappie's and throw em' back! Catching them is the fun part..........just never been much of a fish eater

    San Carlos Crappie

awesome crappie there guys! I can't wait to get the boat wet.........c'mon Pops, get er' out of the garage!!! as far as keepin' them stinky things and having to clean em.........I just let em' go and buy a Big Mac on the way home

    Storm Clouds

This pic pretty much sums up why we had to kill a buck close to the road! But you take 100"ers any way you can......especially when you can't glass em' up!

    Storm Clouds

Here's one that I took in 7W last year during the archery bull hunt. This storm looked brutal! Cool sidenote is that this pic was used as a backdrop in a magazine article recently! Here's a few of the only rainy pics I can find......

    For all you Hog hunters..

I initially thought there were quite a few, but after all the miles my bro and I covered last weekend, I'm thinking there are just a few small herds here and there. They do some serious damage tearing up bushes and cactus....actually ripping brush and cactus out of the ground! One thing I did notice is that on old sites were they had tore up the ground, the grass was taller, greener and more lush........so maybe they aren't that bad? I still plan on smokin' one o' them darn critters though
  18. COOSEFAN

    HOG DOWN!

So that's what those things look like........I spent all day tryin' to find one o' them darn things I'll give my spot a couple more trys, but if they are anything like this last try then I'll be calling you for info and pricing on that ranch! Great job, let us know how they taste. JIM>
  19. Well lookie who finally decided to join the party! I thought I had seen those pic's before and couldn't place it until reading David's reply. Welcome to the site and congrats on the Elk tag!!! JIM>

    Wall of Shame!

The problem is that offroading your quad is actually legal, to an extent, on certain forests. What is illegal is doing damage to that forest by riding a quad there! Prove in court that damage was done and you might get the ticket to stick......otherwise why bother. We will all eventually feel the effects of road closures and not being able to retreive game with a vehicle very soon partly because of all this As far as posting actual pic's of somebody.......that is questionable I think. If somebody posts a pic of an individuals face, name, or license plate......that could be asking for problems on several levels. I would not worry about something like what you posted, especially if I knew for a fact it was illegal on that forest, but to be more descriptive and publicly accuse and identify somebody could definitely cause problems. At the very least you would have to watch your back from that point on
  23. COOSEFAN

    70 mph sheds....

You know what it is......if you spend enough time in the woods you see and find some neat stuff! You of all people know that And besides........with all the luck I have, I still don't have enough luck to find as many Coues sheds as you do!!! JIM>
  24. COOSEFAN

    70 mph sheds....

Yeah....I've been known to have a bit of luck on my side I tell ya what, I bet these sheds wouldn't have sat there for very much longer! They were alot more hidden from the road than the pic's look, and were about 20 yards off, but there is something about white antler tips and tines that stand out.....even at 70 mph! Quite a few shed hunters were parked off the highway in either direction and not far from this set........like has been said, I just got lucky, but i'll take em' how I get em'!
  25. COOSEFAN

    Been out a bit....

Awesome finds Gino! I'll have to post up the few I found now that you broke the ice..........you definitely worked alot harder for yours than I did JIM>
