    An Amazing Elk Hunting Season!

Howdy folks, i've been done with my last elk hunt for a few days now and i'm still trying to catch up with the real world! I've spent somewhere around 150 days in the elk woods this year since June and it's been tough but rewarding to say the least! We took some amazing bulls on all the hunts with 2 being well over 400"! The best part about it all was all the memories and friendships that were made, i can't even begin to explain all that we've seen and done in the last few months! The time spent with my family and close friends and all the experiences we shared are priceless and I'm very thankful for all of it. My only regret is that for the first time in my life I had to burn my own tag, that tag was a late Nov. 33 coues tag and I was sick about it to say the least! My thoughts now are that it happened for a reason and maybe I'll stick a coues this month with my bow I'll keep ya updated on that, definitely hasn't happened yet! Anyways, i mainly just wanted to say congrats to all the successful deer and elk hunters who have posted their stories and pics here! I'll try to go back and read them all, I know i've already seen a few and there's been some great bucks and bulls taken for sure! Also, thanks to the members here who have helped me out and supported me this past season, you all are awesome!!! Here's a pic I took of the bone pile next to the fire on my late rifle hunt, pictured are Shortpants (Jason) and Mel (Playboy) and me in the background, great times for sure! Go to my website and click on "Recent Hunts" to view all our pics and stories, more will be added soon! http://www.mullinsoutfitters.com/

    Just got back!

No I hadn't heard, but that's a crazy story! Just makes the hunt that much more memorable in the end i guess! Antlers can be easily repaired and capes can be bought, more important is the horse was OK and nobody was hurt during the circus! Thanks, JIM>

    full moon

This morning the deer were up but all were moving fast to bedding areas, very little activity midday. Tonight was awesome, seemed like all the deer were up early feeding in close to bedding areas on North facing ridges, saw 8 bucks, killed 2, biggest was just under 90", just got done skinnin and cuttin meat and finally in bed! 1 more tag to go!

    full moon

The last few days I've noticed that the deer will bed at first light and some get up late morning to feed and re-position to a shady bed. I've been watchin deer stay bedded all day and even past last light until I couldn't see through the binos anymore. The deer I'm seeing are definitely not active much in the evening the last few days with this current moon phase. First light is the ticket right now where I'm at on the bigger bucks. May be different elsewhere though.
  24. You know you are addicted to coues AND CWT.com when you are layin' in a sleeping bag, ears are burnin' tryin' to decide if that's somebody walking around my tent or not, I swear it was footsteps, doesn't really matter I couldn't sleep anyways 'cause I can't stop thinking about the awesome country I hiked into today and thinking about the bucks it holds! I just heard that noise again, gonna have to check it out. Anyways, layin' in my sleepin' bag in Coues camp, postin' on CWT.com via my crackberry, pretty much proves I've got an addiction! Might be my trash bag movin' around, sure sounds like somebody outside though!

    First Coues Buck For Tanner!

Hey guys, congrats to all the successful hunters so far, some great bucks being taken for sure! I was just down south with my buddy Craig and his two boys Tyler and Tanner. The boys had the tags and it was a blast to say the least! We glassed up nice bucks daily and never saw any illegals or rattlesnakes so it was a perfect hunt! I had glassed up several nice bucks at around 4 miles on opening morning and made a mental note of their location. We hunted that evening and the next morning in a different area which produced a missed shot on a great buck but the hopes were still high. Early afternoon on the 2nd day we decided that I would take Tanner in the truck and Craig would take Tyler in the Ranger to different areas. Tanner and I took off to see if we could relocate the same ridge I had seen the bucks on opening morning. The roads all run the bottom of the canyons so it would be difficult to determine where to park and hike up but we got lucky on the first try. The hike up is nasty and steep and as we crested we immediately saw our visual markers we had picked out from 4 miles away and knew that we were looking directly accross to the hill the bucks were on. Just as we gave high-fives for finding the right spot I looked across and on the exact same trail as opening morning was a big buck walking sidehill. This is about 3:00 in the afternoon and it was hot so I knew we didn't have much time to set up and shoot as this buck was on the move, probably looking for another shady spot to lay. Tanner and I hustled over to an opening in the trees, I threw my tripod down and glassed the buck again. This time i noticed that he was only a 2x2 and told Tanner it was his call on whether he wanted it, I said I'd hammer 'em in a heartbeat!! I got the shooting forks set up on my tripod just as Tanner slid in behind it with my rifle that he was using, the "Coues Cannon"! Tanner found the buck in the scope and said he wanted 'em, I ranged the buck at 311 yards, dialed up the turret and then tried to stop the walking buck! I grunted several times getting louder with each grunt and the buck didn't finally stop until I did it as loud as I could! Tanner clicked off the safety and BOOM! The buck humped up, stutter-stepped and then flipped over backwards. The hill was so steep it took just short of 100 yards before the buck finally stopped sliding and rolling down the slope! I was certain we had some broken tines but luckily, once we crawled up to the buck we found only scratch marks and a few rub spots on the hide. How's this for a forkie!!! This is the second buck Tanner has killed and I was sitting next to him when he shot his first Muley a few years ago also! This kid has "kill-ability" and proved it with his quick thinking, composure, and skill! Tyler got a shot at another buck in the same spot the following morning, that buck was also a 2x2 but it was a TOAD and made Tanner's 2 pointer look like a dink! We'll be back in there on the next hunt and hopefully we'll get a tag on that other 2 pointer! Congrats again Tanner and thanks for letting me hunt with ya
