Hey Jeffro, my gun builder is a good friend of mine out of CA named Jim Mehl. He's been building rifles since before I was born and does an awesome job! I honestly have no clue about the scope, just what little I've heard about it becuase it was a tip i got from a client last year and was shipped from the Leupold custom shop to Jim Mehl's house. I was told he had several things changed and added to the scope and something was done to the turrets. That client was a mutual friend I share with Jim Mehl and is an amazing gunsmith himself. I'll know more when I get to see it for the first time next week. Last time I saw the gun it was just a Wal-Mart special, Rem 700 rifle that I bought and stripped down for the action. Now it's got a Hart barrel, Hunters Edge stock and all the fixin's to go with it! JIM>

Huntin' Striped Marlin instead of Coues...

Yep, I saw one Dorado while cruisin' around but none of us caught any. I just wanted to see one in person up close, ever since I was a kid I've wanted to catch one of those! Those Dorado's i think are the coolest looking fish out there, one of these days i'll catch one hopefully! Thanks!

Spank it in regards to being more dependable on cross canyon shots and other cross wind situations maybe, but my gun builders have several 7mm's that will hold groups at 5" or less at 900-1000 yards. Not every gun is the same though, everything has to be absolutely perfect. I'm finally picking up my new 7mm next week that's taken almost a year to build, break in and work the loads for it. It's supposedly a solid tack driver at 600-700 yards and weigh's dang near half what my .300wm weighs which will be nice for back pack hunts! My .300wm is solid out to 800 in good weather but I have no need to shoot any farther than that other than at rocks and targets but that's already crazy distances for hunting! The 6.5-20x50 LRT with the fine duplex is my favorite scope and that's what I have on my .300wm, this new 7mm has the Mark 4 with custom turrets and fine duplex as well, should be good!

    Check out my little fish!!!!

I took a little detour on my scouting trip last week to Mexico and went fishing out of San Carlos for a few days with some friends on their boat. Never dreamed I would experience anything like what I did in my entire life, absolutely unbeleivable and probably the most exciting 45 mins. of my life!!! According to measurements this Striped Marlin is right at or just above 200 lbs. and over 9 feet tip to tip! I'll post more pics and more of the story later. Check out this beast! For scale, I weigh 220 lbs.! A dream come true for me and one I never thought I would experience! It was the hat for sure because luck played a big part!

    Check out my little fish!!!!

Thanks guys and gals! Yes Jeremy, I am actually at 216 lbs today which is about 10-15 lbs too heavy for me....wife just got me started on that P90X program though Jay, the fishing was very slow. There was a tournament going on at the same time and i heard out of 30 boats they only caught 11 billfish, mostly Sails, and 12 Dorado total for 2 days! The water had turned green and the fish moved out but the wind on Sunday and Monday pushed the blue water back in and the fishing got better. I caught a couple Yellowtail and rock bass but nothing big, my buddy caught a couple giant Yellowtails and a Grouper which was some great eating!!! Amanda, I ate more fish on that trip than I ever have but we had the restaurants cook our fish for us which was amazing! Houston, I had a Sail on for about 3 or 4 minutes before he threw the lure. My buddies said he was a smaller one but what an amazing sight watching it twist and fold in the air over and over again! Thanks again, photobucket is ready so I'll post up some other pics....

That brings back a lot of memories, one of my favorite lakes! Great job on the bass! JIM>
  11. That Henry is just a fun gun to shoot and i love the feel of a lever gun, and as Lark mentioned it's a very well made rifle. JIM>

    Shot the 300 wm yesterday!!

I'm by no means an expert but I know that my custom .300 will shoot best with once fired Winchester brass. I can shoot with new brass and it'll hit considerably different than the once fired brass that it was sighted in with and not as consistent. It's weird but it is what it is. JIM>

New bow -Hoyt, mathews, or bowtech?

I've always been a die hard Mathews shooter but once Hoyt came out with the new Maxxis, that all changed Shooting is beleiving, go shoot them all side by side and you'll know which one is best for you. Don't buy a bow just because it's the "cool" bow to own or because it looks good, buy one that fits you and makes you smile each time you shoot it! This new Maxxis I have sittin' next to me right now is the baddest arrow flingin' machine I've ever owned and it makes me smile everytime I shoot it! Good luck and get what's right for you! JIM>

    I've done it! I'm a ship jumper!!

Well guys, i'm the proud new owner of a Hoyt Maxxis 31! My last 3 bows were all Mathews, a Q2, Legacy, and the DXT. All were great bows and I killed a bunch of critters with em', but all had common problems that i couldn't fix....they were slow and inconsistent! I had a problem with torqueing the riser with each one of my Mathews and I never liked the grip on any of em'. I had to constantly be very aware of my grip on the bow and I was constantly having problems with left or right inconsistencies. I did love how smooth and quiet the Mathews bows are, but smooth and quiet doesn't help accuracy much at all! So with my background as a Mathews shooter and all the good things I was hearing about the new Hoyt bows, I decided to at least test drive one........HOLY COW!!!! This new Maxxis is extremely fast and very surprisingly smooth and quiet! Probably the one main thing that sold me on this new Maxxis is how solid it feels while at full draw, there is no problems with riser torque and that is a night and day difference compared to Mathews! I even compared my Maxxis 31 with the new Mathews Z7 and I'm not lying, I was very surprised how much difference there was between these bows! The Maxxis is seriously more stable at full draw than the Z7 and I noticed very little difference in hand shock or noise between the two. With the stability issues I had with all my Mathews bows, and seeing that the newest Z7 was no different, my choice in buying the Maxxis was a "no brainer"! I also switched from the Spot Hog sight to the Armortech Axcel 7 pin sight with the .010 pins. I stayed with the Quality Archery Design's Ultra Rest which has been a great rest for me, and all the other accesories are from Fuse. I went with the ACC's again which are a strong, hard hitting arrow which has never dissappointed me and I've killed pigs, turkeys, deer, antelope, elk and bear with them without fail! Thanks very much to Jeremy at Chasin' a Dream Outfitters for getting me all set up! It's very appearant you are an expert bow tech and extremely knowledgeable about the equipment and the sport itself. I'd have no problem sending anyone I know to your shop, it was a great experience and I'll be back soon to have you build me a custom bowstring! Thanks again!!! JIM>

    Whitetail seasons

I like any hunt I can get, doesn't matter if it's early or late! But, I can guarantee myself an early tag every year and I would rather hunt every year in Oct. rather than waiting between tags for Dec. hunts. Sure it's cooler, has less pressure and extra time on the Dec. hunts, but you can kill the same deer in Oct if your willing to put up with some heat and pressure. One thing that I like about the Oct. hunts is those factors, heat and pressure, that can be used to your benefit. Both factors will narrow down where you need to look for a good buck. In Dec. they can and will be anywhere, sometimes with no rhyme or reason and sometimes they won't stay long. In Oct. they will spend most of the day on the shady side of a hill or down in a low pressure pocket, and best of all they usually have buddies! So, when you find one in Oct. you will probably have several bucks to choose from! I've got areas where in Oct. I know right where to look to find bucks and where not to look because it's a waste of time. When I go to that same area in late Dec. I have to look everywhere to try and find the same deer that I previously had concentrated in Oct. I'll take all the Oct. tags I can get

"Guess now that we shoot the same bow and drive the same trucks as our Idol... we will have to find other things to give him Crap about like Doughnuts, and Profiling, and Height vs. Girth.... ya know... more personal things!!! " HA HA HA HA!!!!! Height vs. Girth.......I love it! Dude, I bought a dodge only because it was the cheapest thing I could find....which hurts a lot less when I scratch it or smash it into trees or sink it in a lake in Mexico

    Before and after photos!

This dude broke sometime just prior to this trailcam pic, camera was placed there right after seeing him unbroken in person the day before. Didn't realize it was the same buck until a week later when i found him for my client. Trailcam pics can be VERY decieving, as you can see here. I thought that was just a broken 100" class buck....he was actually 117" as is broken in the trailcam pic! Not coues, but wouldn't have killed this buck without using trailcams! Also had this buck at 195" in the trailcam pics, ended up officially grossing 215". Ya never can be for sure, but they have usually been bigger in person for me.

    I've done it! I'm a ship jumper!!

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one Gino.......I just got a message from Jeremy that my new Maxxis just arrived too Sorry Mathews, that new Maxxis finally did it for me, I'm jumpin' ship too. Gotta go with the best and I guarantee I'm gonna whack my first archery coues this year with it, hopefully with Mexico on the list I'll whack a couple of em' to make up for lost time Jorge G.>

    Must've been the hat!

While at Jeremy's grand opening on Saturday I bought a new CWT hat from Amanda. We decided that on our way home we would stop and run around the woods for a little bit and hopefully find a shed. By the time we got to a likely spot we only had a little time left before dark so off we went. Like usual, after crossing many quad tracks that were old and fresh, my confidence level was in the gutter but after hiking one last hill, I topped out and stopped to catch my breath. I had taken my new hat off earlier because I was sweating so much I didn't want to ruin it. I wiped my brow, threw my new hat back on and thought to myself, "dam, this hat fits good, and I know I look REAL good with it on , if only it had some luck built in to it"! Just then, I started to walk again and right there across an open clearing was a chocolate brownie with a bright white pedicle! It's just a dink but I had put some time into this area on a previous day and had already covered some ground on this day so it was very rewarding to finally see that brownie layin' there! I know it had to be the hat, I even rubbed the hat on the antler before I picked it up in hopes of rubbin' in some luck! So if you guys aren't havin' much luck finding sheds lately, go to the CWT.com store and pick up one of these hats! They are great, you'll look REAL good with it on, and I believe there's some luck built into them JIM>

Havalon Knives - Check these out!

These are the best knives I've ever owned! I still carry around my skinnin' bag filled with Alaska knives, John Toner knives and an assortment of others, but I only use the Havalon. I've done several entire bull elk with one blade, and only because I didn't have an extra blade with me. I like to change out the blades often because when they get dull you start having to apply too much force to the knife, and that's when bad things happen! One thing, and this is the only drawback, the blades are weak if you aren't running it straight, and you twist the blade and apply much pressure it will snap and sometimes go flying! This is no problem if you are paying attention and not trying to show off! (which i've been guilty of ) The back of the neck on a ruttin' bull is the worst and best place to use the Havalon, it works great but you have to be very careful not to twist the blade. Coues deer are like butter to a Havalon, they make it amazingly easy, especially when caping the head!

    Outfitter Killed

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. That's incredibly sad and scary to hear about this as it hits way to close to home for me! It sounds as though it's the "wrong place at the wrong time" scenario and the fact he's an outfitter down there has nothing to do with why he was targeted, but It is the reason why he was in that wrong place though. I always try to travel during mid day down there and I guarantee I'll be driving a beat up and dirty ol' truck next time. Man I hope my wife or my mom don't hear about this!!!
