I have personally killed several lions and several bears and I've helped other folks kill a whole pile of bears and a few lions over the years... and not a single one of em' has been with dogs. I've had MUCH tougher hunts with hounds and have yet to kill a critter while using hounds. I hope one day I get to experience taking a lion or bear after chasing the hounds and watching them sort out a track, lord knows I've put in the miles already! NoDinks... it's apples and oranges. Just like shooting a deer with a rifle at 600 yards or shooting one at 20 yards with a recurve, it's just different styles of hunting and in the end it's hunting just the same. You have the right to decide what style of hunting you like, and you also have the right to dislike or disagree with other styles of hunting. BUT, to announce it so negatively such as you have here, and unfortunately probably elsewhere in public, you are only damaging the sport of hunting and THAT INCLUDES whatever styles you personally like and approve of! Hunting is hunting as far as the anit's are concerned, and talking like you do about a different style of hunting can easily turn a non-hunter into an anti, and that will directly affect you as well as houndsmen. Thanks for the replies guys. I also love the leftover hunts in 36's, there's a ton of deer over there! The ability to still get a tag even after being unsuccessful in the draw is awesome, so any leftover tag is a good one....well, actually, with the exception of 36A, I hate that unit!

The problem here is that you have based your opinion off of the illegal actions of others! The right and legal way is for that hunter/client to be present before the dogs are even let out! In doing it legally, the hunter is going to get the full experience of looking for tracks, seeing the dogs work and most likely getting some serious excercise! The other thing is that it's never a sure thing! The biggest misconception I usually hear about is everyone thinks it's a sure thing with dogs and that if you have em' you're automatically going to kill your animal, and that aint the case! I've been on a lot of lion hunts and have only seen 1 lion treed, and there have been some SERIOUS miles put in collectively to just see that 1 lion! JIM>

C'mon, I know I ain't the only leftover lover here!

I used to carry a separate small bag full of knives. I loved the Alaska Knives and the custom John Toner knives and I had an assortment of other knives as well in that bag. Then along came the Havalon Piranta and I haven't touched a different knife since! I still keep my knife bag with all my other knives in my truck, but those are only for other folks to use because I don't trust other people using a Havalon around me! I skin, cape and bone out a bunch of critters every year and all I carry with me is a Havalon Piranta with extra blades. It's lighter, cheaper and MUCH sharper!

Howdy folks! I haven't been around much since the beginning of summer due to school and trying to start a new side business. Once the hunts started I put it all on hold and headed for the hills! As most of you can attest, it was a tough year to hunt elk! The rains didn't help and the bulls were not following the rule book to say the least! We fortunately figured out enough of a pattern to put some great bulls on the ground and we had a blast making new friends and new memories! We had 9 clients and killed 7 bulls with an average score of 360"! All our hunters had opportunities at great bulls and we all had a blast in the process! Before I have to switch gears again I wanted to update our website/blog and get some of these recent stories up for you all. I've got a handfull of them up now for you all to check out when you get time and I should have more posted as soon as I get a chance! Thanks and congrats to all that were successful thus far on their own hunts! JIM> Here's the link to the Mullins Outfitters Recent Hunts: http://recenthuntsatmullins.blogspot.com/ Also, here's a few pics from stories I've uploaded so far....

. During the archery elk hunts this year I was fortunate to experience an awesome hunt with good friends Tony and Craig! Tony and his family have hunted Coues with me for the last few years and we've had some great times together. I knew this hunt would be no different. Tony had drawn the archery elk tag and despite the slow rut and bad weather he kept his spirits up the whole time and I knew it was just a matter of time until he got the shot he wanted. The time frame between the first and last shot was a roller coaster full of emotions with it's highs and lows but in the end we were rewarded for all our determination and persistence! Thanks Tony for letting me experience it with ya and congrats on a great first bull and great job stickin' with it! Here's Tony's story..... "We'll, we spent 10 days hunting in solid rain with almost no rut activity and finaly got a shot at a nice Bull and I hit a little bit back, not the best shot. After givin him plenty of time we started tracking we'll we followed blood until it stoped then we were able to track him in the soft ground. At 12:30 and two miles later we GPS the last track and went back to camp. After a night of no sleep we picked his tracks back up and followed them for another two and a half miles were we spooked him off his bed and he blew out like nothing was wrong I just knew we were not gona recover this bull. So we stayed put and gave him some more time after what seemed like forever we were back on his tracks. He had only gone 200yards and beded this time we were ready we closed the distance to 45yrds man I was shacking so bad but I took a deep breath and sent the arrow and place a great shot hitting both lungs. He blew out again and went 60 yards where he crashed and we recoverd him. What an awsome hunt and a great track job by Craig and Jim. It pays to be persistant!" . View the full article

"We saw all 27 of the 15 hunters on our hunt. "..... I was thinking the same thing when we were there! LOL! I don't know if we saw you or not but we had more than our fair share of company where we were! Congrats on a great buck! JIM>

Thanks for the great replies all! I came up with 84" on dad's Antelope but everyone thinks I didn't score em' right. I think he looks bigger but with the prongs so low and also being his weakest measurement they definitely don't help his score. He's all mass and is an absolute stud buck, especially with a smokepole and Pops is excited with him regardless of score and that's all that matters! Webber, I used up all that cover scent you sent me! I really liked the juniper scent and we went thru it fast on all the elk hunts, especially on the days when we were stuck sitting water. All my clients liked it and will be buying it in the future i'm sure! Thanks!

In the region you mentioned, I'd only refer folks to Casey's Processing. I've sent a ton of bulls to him and everyone has been more than impressed with his business and his work! JIM>

Hey Steve, do you by chance know Greg Southworth "the carrot farmer" in your hometown?
