Coues country's other inhabitants
COOSEFAN posted a topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I'm stuck at home again so figured I start a new thread. There has been some awesome photos of Gila Monsters and Rattlers lately, maybe we can see some others here in this thread. I had a serious fascination with poisonous critters when I was younger, hunted them, collected them, photographed them and even got bit by them ( which forced me to avoid them from that point on) I have since given it up, but I always look for them and enjoy seeing any reptile out in Coues country, as long as I'm not standing on it! This one is a AZ Blacktail, the most aggressive one I've seen, on the Res last year. This is just a cool photo of a Western Diamondback. This is an AZ Black Rattlesnake that is in the process of shedding, these things can blend into anything! This is two Western Diamondbacks that I found together, probably getting ready to mate, but got all upset that I disturbed them and the lighter colored snake started biting the dark one. You can see the fangs from the one sinking into the dark snake. The dark snake eventually died. The lighter snake is actually pushing 6 feet in length and the tanned skin stretched to 6 1/2 feet! These monsters were on the Res also. Thanks JIM> -
Imagine that.....three "book" class bucks on the same hunt this side of the border! Thats our goal and I would gladly take the smallest Hey Jack, what did that toad score? I need to let Shortypants know what the bottom line is for my buck! JIM>

Hey Jack, My buddies and I have the early tag in there this year and are packin' in for the whole hunt, hopefully to at least throw some lead at a buck like that! I remember that pic and that's an awesome buck! Congrats again on that, JIM> Deerwelder, your getting some good info, but remember that road through Canelo Pass IS the southeastern border of the unit. 35A is across the road and if you go as Jack mentioned south of the Pass, you have to stay West of that road. I'm sure you already know that, but there are maps out there that make it hard to differentiate which road is which. Pretty much most of that right there south/southwest of the Pass is Antelope looking country, but you'll see where you need to be if you try that spot! Best of luck! JIM> Hey speakin of the devil, This guy just posted when I did and didn't see it before, but Shortpants is the guy that promised me he'll glass up a buck like Jacks on our hunt and let me shoot it! What a nice feller! JIM> That right there is what I want and nothing less Shortypants!

I will take that as pretty much aimed at me on this one! I apologize if hunting behind the golf course or on Devil Dog happens to be your hotspot, and with the incredible size of the unit in mind, saying that there is some vantage points on the north end, is in my mind, pretty darn vague! Again, I apologize if that whole north end was your hotspot....you might be crammed in with a couple more poeple now, sorry! Most poeple on this site that know me, know that I love to help out anyway I can, and I do, and if it is about a certain area, it definitely goes through the privacy of a PM. I honestly felt I wasn't giving away anyones "honey-hole", if I did, I sincerely apologize, but what I said was my way of being vague yet still helpfull, and as always it is only my $.02 and should only be taken as such! Thanks, JIM>

I am jealous you guys have had your Danners long enough to get smelly! I can't get more than a year out of a pair, and usually by the end of January, I'm having to sew them up and forget about being waterproof! Granted.......I put alot of hard miles on them, I'm kinda fat too, but I wish I can find a boot that will last for me. I had the Quarry style 2 years ago, wore the sole out and the toe, last year had the Grand Slam style, the toe cover is coming off and had to sew it back on for my Mexico hunts, and I just bought the Full Curl style last Sat. and hope they last at least a month longer than the Grand Slam's did. The Danners do last for the season, which is more than I can say about all the other brands I've tried, and is why I keep going back to em', it just gets expensive only getting one season outta them. Hey Shortypants, I would send a PM to Scott Adams, I think he works there. JIM>

THAT HUNT SUCKS! Thats all I have to say about that........ .......I'm serious. I do know that you stand a better chance at seeing a buck by the Devil Dog road but a better chance closer to Williams. Behind the golf course is a good place to possibly find some little bucks, but lots of poeple. I avoid that hunt like the plague! There are some bruisers in the unit, BUT they are absolutely a needle in the haystack! There is a couple spots way up north where it's possible to glass bucks, but getting on one and killing it, is a different story in thick cedars! I'll talk to you later Shortypants,....... JIM>

dang, you guys have some awesome pic's.......elkhunter, those are some "wicked" photos, don't look real! Doug....come on man....You can't charge me for it.......the pic was broken when I opened it up and won't work on my desktop! I want to return it! Just kidding....your not getting it back! JIM>

I think you have some serious issues you need to deal with there, David! You guys have some great photo's, Crotalus, I love that one in the cactus, and also that Mohave that Tony has, very cool! Almost all of my pic's are scans from 35mm pics, didn't ever have a digital camera back in my young-n DUMB days, wish I had though! Thanks, JIM> -
My favorite stuff to hunt Coues in is Ocotillo! I don't know why they like the stuff, just know that they do! Any time I see a hillside covered in Ocotillo's, I automatically think of Coues deer and start looking for the horizontal lines in the vertical maze of Ocotillo branches, never overlook the Ocotillos! JIM>

Doug, that first photo is incredible! You need to get that one framed, great composition! Probably should get it trademarked cause' I just stole it for my desktop background! JIM>

I'm surprised nobody here recognizes this truck? It is not in 36B, although there is similar ones there, but this is actually set up perfectly to hunt out of! There is a waterhole 20 yrds in front of this truck and this unit is a favorite among many poeple on this site! Any guesses? JIM>

Thanks a whole bunch Mike! I appreciate it! -
Hey Jorge, I do believe I have that video and it is now up for sale. Manny Hey, now.......Officer Madrid........I think it's illegal to sell evidence!
-
Thanks, I was hesitant posting it......didn't want anyone to think I make a habit of altering photos! I understand if he's needin the money, I did promise a good friend of mine that I would offer your neighbor a fully guided Mexico hunt, free of charge and possibly some money on top, in trade for that quad? We understand if not, just curious. Please let us know if it gets sold, I'm still interested, thanks JIM>

Hey now........THAT's considered "baiting"!

MONSTER COUES BUCK
COOSEFAN replied to COOSEFAN's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
That's probably true! "Sorry Jim that buck already moved to 36B for my hunt. " Manny, this is probably true as well, I hope you kill a toad like that this year, you deserve it after the time you put into it last year! JIM> -

Good eye! I didn't see the elk till you pointed it out! Good job on the pic's David! JIM> -
I thought I burned all the evidence! This is real weird cause' I haven't seen that pic in a while, but just yesterday I walked into Sportsman's and saw they had a photo album laying out with old pictures in it. The Album was opened up to the page that had that exact picture on it..........I saw it and kept walking, hoping nobody recognized me! And about 2 hours ago I was telling my buddy, Craig ( the driver of the truck) that the picture was still around...and NOW, I get on here and you have it posted! I'm busted, it has come back to haunt me..........good thing you don't have the video to go along with the pic Thanks, Jorge>

The main thing with bears is they are where the food is! The best is when the Prickly Pears are ripe, the bears will be in them and are easier to glass up. Glassing for them in these food sources is I feel the best tactic, but if they seem to be in thicker country, a varmint call works as well. With varmint calling, always have a big backstop such as a tree so they don't get ya from behind! I feel it's best to be close in to where you think a bear might be and blow loud and long on the call. I've seen them stop and start to turn around as soon as you stop calling. Keep calling as long as you can if you feel there is probably a bear in the area, at least 45 mins. An electronic caller is best for this because a mouth blown call will wear you out fast. A jackrabbit tape/call or a fawn in distress work well but make sure the wind is blowing in your face no matter what, one whiff and a bear will swap ends as fast as an Elk! Best of luck to ya, JIM>

Here's one very upset Diamondback! I think this is the tallest I've ever seen one pose. JIM> I was Turkey hunting up in 4B one year with my dad, and was standing on an outcropping overlooking a deep ravine covered in Pine trees, I looked down and saw what looked like Turkey droppings on a ledge. Curious, I went down a little opening in the rocks to get a closer look, thinking it was crazy a Turkey could poop on such a small ledge! Upon closer inspection, I realized that it did look like Turkey poop, but was probably snake poop because there were coiled up AZ Black rattlers everywhere around me and they started buzzing. I pretty much "flew" back to the top of the rocks! There was a crack in the ledge that I was looking at that had a bunch of little black snake heads pointing out getting the morning sun! We have gone back to that spot several times since and there is always snakes in or around that outcropping. Here's a pic of one smaller AZ Black rattler. I don't think I ever got any good photos of that den site, but I'll check. JIM> -

"Critters that BITE!.............NOT critters that STING!" I am actually glad you posted that pic, I have seen those and always wondered what they were, but never cared to find out........just wanted them as far away from me as possible! I hate 8-legged critters all the same! But go ahead and post more of em'.......I'm diggin' out some more slimey snake photo's! JIM> -

Hey Crotalus, It was about 7-8 years ago, but I do remember them saying that I was lucky that Good Samaritan Hospital had the Antivenin, and that supplies were short. You definitely know your stuff on this matter! My lasting effects are pain in the joints on my finger and I still don't, and probably never will, have feeling from the middle of my finger to the tip. It really hurts in cold tempuratures, I mean REALLY hurts. I have to specially wrap that finger up or make sure I have several handwarmers with me when it's cold out. My problem is this thread now.............Who's idea was it to put scorpion thingy's on here! I HATE any critter with more than 4 legs! I can't even stand killing them, don't want to see em' and don't want them around me! I am not joking! I have arachniphobia no doubt and would rather walk into a feild full of snakes than have 1 scorpion on me! I will have nightmares tonight about "Children of the Earth" attacking me! I'm not joking! THANKS ALOT. JIM> -
SHORTPANTS IS FINALLY ON CW.

Hey Mike, "Hunter" is an awesome name and probably what he would use, but one of his closest friends just named his son Hunter. Might have a conflict of interest there? JIM>
