Nice , not much tougher quarry than free range barbary .

for deer size game , in my 30 cals I always liked 150 - 165 grain bullets . If I was going for something bigger like elk , I would look to 180 - 200 grain bullets as long as I could get an acceptable group ; some rifles may show a preferance for certain kind or size bullet , in that case I would go with most accurate . Last few years if I shot factory they were hornadys but everybody has thier favorites .

Of the ones you mention I vote 30-06 . If it was dedicated coues rifle , I'd say 270 . 7 mm rem mag gives you little more zip without a whole lot more recoil . You can manage recoil on the bench with pads and hearing protection to prevent bad shooting habits , its not near as noticable in the field . Edited to add that I just noticed there a couple nice weatherby rifles in cwt classifieds .

I wouldnt be surprized if 300 weatherby has taken every game animal on every continent . I dont notice the recoil when I'm in the field ,,,,much.

good choice ! but since you plan on handloading why not go with 300 wby , it will even shoot 300 win in a pinch .

If you're wanting to go longer range than you feel comfortably with using your -06 , why would you consider shortening the case and reducing powder capacity ? In other words .308 aint nothin but a shortened 30-06 . If you want to see improvemet over your -06 , then I would suggest for you step up to at least 7 rem mag and 300 wby would be even better .
