    Varmit hunting

Tonight after I fed the horses there was a big ole rat in the feed barrel when I started to put the lid on . Well I grabbed a stick and knocked him in the head , but I didnt know what to do with it to morally justify killing it . I thought maybe I could feed it to the cats , then I remembered that I didnt have any cats . I didnt figure the pelt was worth much , how was I gonna sleep killing something that I had no use for ? Thats when it hit me , heck you dont really know whats in those tacos from those roadside stands but they're usually pretty tasty . TACO de la CARNE de RATA

    Unit 29 Dec. hunt

I found this shed and the buck that dropped it a couple of years ago in 29 . Unfortunately , I missed an easy , standing , broadside shot , I overestimated the range and shot right over him . Yeah , yeah , I knew better than to hold over his back but a combination of things caused me me to err in judgement . Legend has it that there is a "Booner" of a buck in 29 with a magic force field around him that protects him from bullets . This buck wasnt legendary big and my bullet went right where I aimed it , therefore I dont think this buck had the force ,he just got lucky . 29 is a big tough unit , but there are some nice deer in there and the success rate isnt too bad . You can find deer in 29 in just about any kind of country you like to hunt , from forest to more open spaces . Access can be tricky in some places but it can be had , get a good map and you will find a way in . I'm sure others know much more than I about 29 . Good Luck , have a good time , and watch out for "El Tigre".

    Why do we hunt Coues?

I enjoy the challenge they present , being in the terrain and country they inhabit , and employing my own technique a combination of spot and stalk and runnin and gunnin . They are paranoid little deer that live in big beautiful country and thats why I love them . I spent every season of the whole decade of the nineties hunting mule deer in the Apache Mountains . When I worked in Phoenix I learned about left over tags ,and the idea of hunting coues deer got in my head , but it was several more years before I actually procured a tag . The gear and techniques I had aquired hunting those mulies in the Apaches were well suited to hunting Coues deer and I have been lucky enough to do it four years in row . Yeah , I'm pretty well hooked .

    Eleven-Eleven=95

11-11 was when my 2008 coues hunt ended . It had began on the seventh , in the am. I hiked to a saddle with a nice view and passed on a thin 3x3 . Afternoon rolled around and found me restless so I took to the top of the hills and spotted several groups of does and fawns as I worked my way higher and higher . I could see my truck in the distance and I studied the terrain to determine the best route down and back to it .I got down before dark but just barely , while walking on the flats, I heard mule deer I couldnt see bouncing away . Day two and three I spent hunting in an area of the unit I hadnt been to before . It was incredible looking country but I saw only a few does and fawns . Walking back on Sunday night I was pelted with small hail but at least I didnt get too wet. The lightning was surreal . Monday morning found me back in my usual area . I watched a spike eating leaves off a tree do the ghost thing and dissappear before my eyes . Does and yearlings filled the day till afternoon . Miles from my truck and getting late in the day , I was moving too fast along the ridge top when in front of me a doe blows and a buck is up and running . This buck is the first Coues buck that I've seen that made me say "Holy Cow , look at that big buck " and I tried to sit and get on my bipod but he isnt slowing down and , too late , I fired as he went over the ridge . My new rifles first shot at a coues buck was a clean miss . The dissapointment didnt make my long walk any shorter . I took to long to set up and I knew I should have just stood like a man and made the shot . The last four days had been pretty rough , miles and miles had taken thier toll and I was feeling beat up but after seeing that buck I wasnt ready to give up . So , Tuesday I came with help , I brought along my wife and a couple of our horses . We saddled up and rode to the end of a trail which was near where I had seen the buck the day before. I climbed a hill to have a look around . I scanned the peak the deer had been on the day before and there near the top something caught my eye . It was Mickey Mouse , I stared thinking it would probaly turn out to be cactus pads but no it wasnt a cactus and it wasnt Mickey either , it was a deer . I could only see one deer and it didnt have horns , but the buck the day before had been with a doe . I got on the radio and told my wife what was going on and that I was going to circle the hill I was on to try and get a better look up there . I moved to a vantge point and quickly located minnie mouse doe again , I still couldnt see any more deer up there but I was 800+ yards away . I moved back down and started around to get closer . I hadnt gotten far when a deer burst out from under some bushes in front of me . I ran to the side of the bushes to see a buck making his getaway . The range wasnt far and I tracked him with my scope , when he came out from behind an ocotillo , I took my shot and fired . He was going down hill and quartering away , the bullet from my seven mag caught him behind the ribs and went right into the boiler room . He went down right there . I made my way to him and found I had just taken a very cool buck . No , he wasnt as big as the one that got away and I didnt get to find out if the other buck was up there with minnie mouse doe , but I had taken a nice buck and I had taken him on the run and I got him by standing and shooting like a man . I felt redeemed . I hadnt gone very far from where I left the horses so my wife came up and took some pictures . I field dressed him and carried him down to where the horses were tied . I threw him across my saddle and strapped him down . It was another long walk out but it didnt seem too bad what with my horse carring my deer and my rifle . My taxidermist measured this buck at 95 inches even . Yes, I do know where I want to hunt next year.

    Draw results out

I drew a Jackelope tag , no antler restrictions , but the caliber restriction says you gotta use 7-08 . Anybody knows a 7-08 wont kill a Jackelope . Bummer , this one has been showing up on my trail camera . I've heard they have a taste for whiskey , if I baited him with Jack Daniels and waited till he got good and drunk would it still be unethical to use a 7-08 if I just snuck up and clubbed him with it ?

    average coues buck measurements

The coues buck I took this year measured 32 in tall at the shoulder , 31 1/2 in long from chest to rump , 13 1/2 in deep from top of shoulder to bottom of chest . I didnt weigh him , but I did carry him a ways and I would estimate that he weighed about 80 pounds field dressed . His gross score was 95 .

  24. copied and pasted from Pittsburgh Tribune Review Barack Obama, exposed: View of constitution By Cal Thomas Sunday, November 2, 2008 The October surprise of this presidential election might just turn out to be a seven-year-old interview with Barack Obama in which he strongly suggests that the U.S. Constitution is an impediment to his desire to redistribute the nation's wealth. So, how does Sen. Obama credibly take the oath of office to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States" when he thinks it impedes his socialist agenda? Is socialism too strong a word? Consider one of its definitions from dictionary.com and tell me it is something other than Obama's economic philosophy: A theory or system of social reform which contemplates a complete reconstruction of society, with a more just and equitable distribution of property and labor. A complete restructuring of society is what Obama advocated in a 2001 interview on a Chicago public radio station. According to Politico.com, in that interview, Obama, "reflecting on the Warren Court's successes and failures in helping to usher-in civil rights," said, "I think where it succeeded was to vest formal rights in previously dispossessed peoples." He has it backward. The Creator already endowed black people with these rights, which is precisely the argument powerfully made by Martin Luther King Jr. Any rights that are "vested" in people by other people may be removed by the same or future people. Endowed rights are "unalienable" and what America did was to finally recognize those rights. Obama continues with a comment that the "Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of the redistribution of wealth and sort of basic issues of political and economic justice in this society, and to that extent as radical as people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn't that radical." Does he mean that for real "justice" to have been achieved, the Warren Court should have taken from the rich and given to the black poor? Obama never said what would happen once the redistributed money ran out. Perhaps this was not to be a one-time event but a lifetime of "reparations" for slavery, as some other left-wing black leaders have proposed. On Bill O'Reilly's Fox show last Monday night, former Democrat vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro defended high taxes in New York and Obama's pledge to raise them nationally, saying, "At least they're not taking it all." It may have been an attempt at humor but this betrays the Democratic Party's attitude: They feel they have the right to say how much of your hard-earned money you can keep. Actually, we should be telling government how much of our money we will allow it to spend. Anyone hoping to make more money and improve his life will have to work even harder to overcome Obama's redistribution plans. Obama thought the Warren Court should have "broken free" from the constraints placed on the Constitution and the courts by the Founding Fathers and Framers. This is remarkable hubris. Obama said the Constitution mostly "says what the states can't do to you ... what the federal government can't do to you, but it doesn't say what the federal government or state government must do on your behalf." That's because the Constitution is about liberty and protecting citizens from oppressive and invasive government. This is scary stuff. That it is only now surfacing is another reminder of the poor job the mainstream media have done in vetting Obama. Barack Obama thinks the Constitution and the country it helped create should be remade in his image. He wants to be a Founding Father of a different America, one that would bear little resemblance to the country we have known. This is radical in the extreme and Obama, along with his many acolytes who are itching to get their hands on unchecked political power, are a danger to this nation's survival. John McCain stands in the way of a complete liberal coup that would transform America in ways the Founders and Framers and most Americans would oppose. McCain might be dull at times. McCain might have run an imperfect campaign. McCain should have spent more time exposing Obama as a radical socialist instead of worrying what the media would say if he did. But John McCain is a patriot who has proved his love, service and dedication to this country in ways that Obama cannot begin to achieve or appreciate. Electing Barack Obama president of the United States would be a roll of loaded dice. We will live (and possibly die) to regret it. Republicans have made many mistakes and deserve the punishment they are now getting. But the one charge that cannot be laid at their doorstep is that they wanted to rewrite the Constitution and weaken the country. Barack Obama will do that and more. Wake up, America, and stop flirting with this guy because you are flirting with disaster. Cal Thomas, a USA Today and nationally syndicated columnist
