I have used the bogan since 1998 and it is a very stable. However it is heavy, especially after carring it around all day. I just purchased a modified Velbon tripod from Jim White along with his pan head. This setup is much lighter than the Bogan. Both these items can be purchased from this site.

I was going through the "Draw results are up" topic in Arizona hunting. I counted at least nine tags that went to CW.com members, family or their friends. I spoke to Jim "COOSEFAN" on the phone and I know his brother drew it but I not sure if anybody else he knows drew it. So Jim if you could help me out. At this point there 66 tags left out there. I thinks its awesome that so many people from a small elite group like us drew one of the most coveted elk tags in the world!!! I was up there Thursday and it has been pretty dry. Most of the dirt tanks were dry or about to be dry but, all of the trick tanks had plenty of water in them. You can tell with the rains we have been getting that its starting to come around. There is a lot of green grass but its only about three to four inches tall so far. We saw 26 bulls with one being an absolute STUD. I will be back up there in the coming weeks and I'm looking foward to that. If you guys want, lets start a new tally and see how many members, family and friends drew the tag. Manny

Great picks, they get my blood moving. -
Bowhuntinmaniac, I looked at your sight and are you Garth? If so we spoke to eachother in Williams a few times last weekend. I was the guy in Trailhead Outdoors booth that had the broken hand in a red cast. We all had five points. I know the unit fairly well. I have not been in the unit since 03 so not real sure what the elk are doing yet. I will be headed up their this Thursday to start poking around.

Why a spotting scope????
mjmhunter replied to coueshunter's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
If your talking about finding the bush or tree you were looking at, yes. If you have a tripod that has quick release plates you can pull your bino's off and put your scope on your tripod without taking it off of the spot you were looking at. Once its on you can put your scope on the lowest power (most scopes 15-20 power) and once you verify your looking at the right spot you can zoom it in to whatever you scope will go to. Sometimes you still can't tell right off the bat, but I have found when animals make small movements such as an ear slightly moving it is easier to notice it when they are zoomed in. -
I have some comp. for you Dan. When I get back from the shoot in Williams i'll post mine. I think yours has a little more mass but the length is the same. And I'm talking Coues sheds there Jimbo aka "COOSEFAN"

I have used the Double bull Matrix in Texas and Nebraska and they work great. I have one but have yet to use here. As for heat I think its a little cooler that other types of antelope blinds such as plywood or burlap. Two years ago on my antelope hunt I sat one for 13 days and all I can say is that it SUCKS!!!!! In 90 degree heat there is no blind that will be cool enough. AZ griz-- As for the fan they work great. I bought a small misting fan that was battery operated and it worked great. You just have to keep your eyes peeled so goats don't sneek in on you when you are cooling off.

Why a spotting scope????
mjmhunter replied to coueshunter's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I believe a spotting scope is absolutely essential in your Coues Deer bag of tricks. One of the number one reasons people use them is to size a deer up and decide if they want to put effort into a stalk. I think my number one reason is miday glassing or when deer are not moving. How many times have you been glassing and glassed what you think is an ear, hair, horn etc. in a bush, base of tree or whatever and could not make out what it was. If you are like me you spend ten, twenty, thirty minutes trying to figure out what it is. I have found that having a scope at my side, I can put the scope up determine if an fact it is something or go on glassing. I guess for me I feel it saves me valuable glassing time. -- Manny-- -
I don't think you can go wrong with Muzzy or Thunderheads. Both of these heads have been around for a while and have proven themselves. Muzzy just recently came out with a short ferruled 100 grain 4-blade called the MX4. I have not shot it yet but I'm sure it will be a great competitor in the new age short ferruled heads. A few years ago I shot the 100 grain Slick Tricks and they were devestating. The only problem was that two of them broke right at the base of the ferrul on animals. On both of them I never hit any major bones and both animals were smaller framed(Deer-Antelope). However, they did fly exactly like my field tips. Most of the short ferruled heads will do this or be very close to field tips. I think the new MX4 Muzzy will be a fantastic head for three reasons easy tuning, being 4-bladed and durability.
