Flagstaff area CWT get together BBQ!
missedagain replied to Lance's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Hopefully I will have my bear hunt over by then because after seeing some of your mugs on the junkies thread I think this bbq might be more entertaining than a Jerry Springer show -
I have tried to stop buying any sporting goods from wal-mart since they already caved and stopped selling guns at so many of there stores. Hasn't there already been a precedence set on this issue? I wish that these lawyers would have to cover the defendants legal costs, maybe that would make them think before they filed suites against everyone they think that they might get to settle.

Oops, I guess I said that wrong in my other post. Fatfootdoc is right you wouldn't give the antivenin as a preventative measure. What I was refering to was a vaccine like shot that my dad looked into giving his dog but decided against it cause the vet he was talking to said it was specific to one type of venom only
-
Whoever told you that the dog will be ok without seeing a vet must have some very tough dogs. Of course every bite is different, sometimes snakes will strike without injecting venom and the dog might be ok without seeing a vet but if you care about your dog you should take it in asap anyway. There is a antivenin that you can give your dogs before you take them out but from what I heard it is only good for one type of rattler. If you are going to take your dogs out regularly it would be worth getting them snake trained. I am sure someone on here either snake trains dogs or knows somebody to connect you with

IMO one of the proofs that az deer management (term used very loosely) is so messed up is that the g$f has no idea what the real carrying capacity is of the land. In the three bar study the deer population was about 10 times as high as the biologist thought that it could be with no adverse affect on vegetation. And who needs winter range in az when you never have more than a few inches of snow on the ground at one time anyway. So if you have 100 marbles in a jar and you take out all of the salt how many more marbles can you feed to the lions
-
Congratulations! Good luck on your hunt and make sure and keep everyone here posted. I think that this will be the future of hunter opportunity in AZ, going somewhere else to hunt!

Pretty cool stuff but I think I will stick to old fashion lead core, I may be old fashion or maybe anti-California Condor... oh no, the game and fish will be after me now

I think I have seen this picture before in a Find the Coues game!

Anybody know how much it costs to get a nr guide licence in NM, I looked all over the website and couldn't find it.

"Recent court ruling on 2005 Planning Rule April 5, 2007 – The United States District Court in northern California has ordered the Forest Service not to utilize the 2005 Planning Rule in on-going forest planning processes. Currently, the Office of General Counsel is reviewing this matter and will provide legal advice to the agency on how to proceed with forest planning. All public collaboration efforts specific to forest planning are postponed until further direction is available. As we know more on how to proceed with forest planning we will share this information. " Is this refering to the new management plan? I thought that this plan had not been implemented yet Anybody Know the story behing all of this?

AZGFD Hunt Recommendations
missedagain replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
The thing that most concerns me in these new recommendations is the "address continuing social concerns". The g$f is admitting that they are letting anti-hunters influence game management. If the g$f takes away 3 months of lion season this year to appease animal rights activits what are they going to give them next year? I believe this issue of removing hunting opportunity purely for animal rights activist and not for sound management is way more important than giving out some extra deer tags or overlaping some seasons. You may not think so right now but this could be a very slippery slope, just wait and see what we are left with after a few years of giving in to these people. -
kgaines- for deer they are suppose to do it by hunt #, for sheep and maybe lope they set the cap by species since a lot of these hunts have less than ten tags and would be hard to split up 10% of less than 10 tags. Otherwise you are pretty much correct on how they do the drawing except that if someone had 10 pts then they would have 11 "balls in the hopper" and if someone had if you had 0 pts you would have 1 "ball in the hopper" I believe what kevin and the rest of the non res. is worried about is the fact that before they do the regular draw they draw 20% of the tags for those with the most bonus points, and if all of the 10% non res. cap is filled during that drawing it is impossible for a non res without max bonus pts to draw a tag. I also think that they g$f will change this system in the next couple of years as they have already admitted that they didn't forsee this situation when they made these rules.
-
kevin- That information is not fully available yet since the g$f have been changing so much the last couple of years and that info is always one year behind the times. My educated guess however is that the situation in which nr can only draw with max points does not apply to most coues hunts like it does to bull elk and strip tags. Within the next couple of years it probably will apply to all dec. coues hunts. but i doubt it ever will in early hunts. The g$f sells this information in a report for $75 but I don't believe the most current edition is available yet

AZGFD Hunt Recommendations
missedagain replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I applaud the game and fish for trying to keep up with the times and finally assigning someone to speak for them on these forums. Unfortunately the az g$f has already lost all credibility to approximately 15,000 of its most loyal customers when they chose to ignore our opinion on the deer hunt structures. This loss of trust will not be regained easily and if the g$f ever hopes to they need to start giving sound management reasoning for all of the unpopular decisions that they make. In my opinion they also need to find someone else to do the fishing reports because it is painfully obvious that the person that does it now knows nothing about fishing -
Awesome pictures and an incredible dog you have there!!!!

I have seen this posted somewhere else before, the story that I heard was that this guy and his brother where in a blind together and somehow this guy got his head only a few inches in front of his brothers bow before he shot. The fact that the arrow was only a few inches into its power cycle is what kept the arrow from going through his head. Another great example of natural selection
-
oh man that is going to hurt when that bull lands on him I am just jealous of the guy that had the balls to put the bell around that cows neck
-
The scary thing is that I have heard that the g$f does less than this on their game surveys, one of my buddys that is g$f says that they do one helicopter flyover every other year because of lack of funds. And this helicopter survey is planned ahead of time so you can imagine that if it happens to be raining or 30 mph winds that day the survey can be very skewed.

C/W member says his card got hit
missedagain replied to Huntn coues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
This all seems crazy to me, with all the things that computers are capable of and they can't figure out how to do a random drawing! The technology is available to have all of the paper applications scanned and read by computers, the internet applicants obviously already have all of the info into the computer, the computer should be able to run the draw in a matter of seconds not weeks add about an hour for verification and we should have the results back the same day!! -

I had driven up to one of my spots late one evening so that I could hike in and set my trail camera in the morning. Since it was such a nice night I just slept in the bed of my truck and when the alarm when off about 15 min. before daylight I snoozed it not wanting to get out of my nice warm bag. I was laying there still half asleep with my head completely under the bag when I felt something heavy shift in my truck, my heart skipped a beat as I was sure that a bear had just jumped into bed with me. As I slowly peeked out from under my bag not wanting to startly it I came face to face with this turkey standing on the rail of my bed and staring at me. Being afraid of getting my eyes pecked out I tried to gently scare the bird away but to no avail, it would just not get out of my truck. Apparently this turkey must be used to being fed by campers because the only way I got it to leave was to crumble up some donuts and throw them away from my truck.

I learned that the coues rut does not start until dec 31 one half hour after sunset!

Draw results are getting closer.
missedagain replied to Huntn coues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
GOOD LUCK!! I think 9 points puts you in max point pool for several archery units, I also have 9 going into this draw but chose to buy the point since my first is due on sept. 3 -
Over the counter archery deer tag gone?
missedagain replied to bowsniper's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I'll third leaving it alone, if you don't like how crowded an area is then find another area! You know that with our g$f even if archery deer did go to a draw they would be giving out 1000's of tags and it would not solve the crowding the only thing it would do is limit hunter oppurtunity -
I found several burnt sheds after the willow springs fire, there were whities that had the tips burnt off, and fresher sheds in the burn area
