having a fire while hunting?
monstercoues replied to muledeerarea33?'s topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I agree, If the conditions are safe, light one up. Camp fires are part of the hunt. I personally won't get too close to it and try not to get too smokey because I can't handle the smell. I have called elk right into camp with a big fire burning, It didn't bother him one bit. -
having trouble in the unit i hunt need HELP!!!!!
monstercoues replied to easymoney's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Hey TLH, I like putting cameras up myself, just to see whats in the area. I do it over water only, and a few trails. I am not trying to keep anyone out of the field, I am just saying that I don't agree with baiting animals. Don't you get sick watching all these hunting shows where guys are sitting in a ac house shooting deer out the windows in there so called blinds. Or sitting a tree stand over bait for anything that just comes in. I am not putting water in the same catagory as baiting. Animals need water to survive, not salt. I thank those that contribute to water hauling. I spend alot of time volunteering to check water catchments and also hauling water myself in Southern AZ. Animals aren't being drawn to areas because there is salt there, they are already there and they just come in because its like giving candy to a baby. They don't benifit from salt, just death by whoever put it out. -

Hey Jim, I see your point and I agree with you. These guys do put alot of hard work and dedication into what they do, and they probably do feel just as good as I do when I walk up on a downed animal. I am just saying that I don't agree with baiting, thats all. Not really a big deal, and I accept your appoligies and I hope I didn't hurt anyones feelings with my thoughts. -

Wow! First of all I just want to say I like your quote at the bottom of your message. "There's nothing funnier than a person trying to be taken seriously". If this is true, than you can bet that I am laughing at your reply. You cordially invite me to shut up huh, well I cordially invite you to quit hunting out of a tree stand with salt and start still hunting on the ground. Also in the thick stuff you can hunt just fine still hunting. I am not saying spot and stalk is the only way, I am just saying that baiting and sitting tree stands or blinds is not fair chase thats all. If you feed them, they will come. -

monstercoues replied to easymoney's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Well you couldn't be more wrong Jim. I spend probably more time out in the field than most of these guys and possibly even you as well. I just think that it is alot more fun and challenging to hunt fairly. I am sorry that I think baiting is wrong. It's illegal to bait bear, it should be illegal to bait deer as well. We have some units here where archers are having just as high success as rifle hunters in some units. Take baiting out of the picture and I bet those archers wouldn't be a factor. I am an archery hunter as well and this is just my opinion, but I would sure feel alot more satisfied taking an animal anyway other than sitting bait. Whats so hard about taking a tree stand up a tree over water or taking a bag of salt or a salt block out into the field and waiting for some critter to walk underneath you and eat. Thats not hunting to me. Just my 2 Cents. Hey Monstercoues.......I know yer expectin' some replies to your statement! Here's mine.... Why do you care? Why make a comment like that? I applaud you for the style of hunting YOU prefer.....I also applaud those guys that choose to sit on their can and wait! I bet most of those guys that hunt out of a blind or treestand spend AT LEAST twice maybe three times more time in the feild establishing their spots than you do hunting your way! It amazes me how dedicated most of those guys are and how much time they invest in their spots. They may be sitting and waiting for their trophy, but they've already done the hours and weeks of hard work and research. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and how they choose to hunt......it definitely doesn't make them less of a hunter because they don't hunt the way you do! You should be happy that they aren't out there stalkin' your deer! I have never hunted out of a treestand or over bait.......but that's because it takes too much time and effort to do it right! Just my $.02 JIM> -

Not to sound mean or anything, but what about fair chase? Quit baiting this animals and hunt them the real way. I can't stand how people hunt these days. It's not hunting if your just sitting on your can waiting for something to come and eat. U might as well set up a lawn chair and eat popcorn with your bow in your hand. Do it the right way and spot and stalk these awesome deer, give yourself the ultimate challenge. -
Awesome paint job! Sounds like a great deal. I wish I wouldn't have just bought one from a friend. Thanks for posting that now Scotty Boy! HAHA

Easy Buddy, I want to find out as soon as you do, but I am guessing they haven't even gone through half of the applications yet. I haven't heard of any roomers yet, but I am guessing when someone finds out it will be posted ASAP. Good Luck on the Draw.

Find out where you want to hunt, what part of the state. Then call the wildlife manager for that area and ask them where to start looking. Actually, even better yet, go to azgfd.gov and go the unit where u want to hunt and it will tell you where to start looking for these awesome little critters.

Good thing they shortend lion season
monstercoues replied to missedagain's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
U are missing the whole reason for the lion closure. There are more anti-hunters than there are hunters out there. All the anti's are complaining that we hunt them all year and want to put an end to hunting them period, so the azgfd had to try to do something to show they aren't hunter all year. Plus they are still allowing depredation to take place in the summer months. I agree with you though it does suck, but it's better than not being able to hunt them at all. -
Well I know Steve at signiture, and they do nice looking work. Well that is when they want to. I have heard some bad things about them from someone who used to work for them. He doesn't work for them any longer because he couldn't stand how they treated some of there customers. So I believe that they treated you bad. If I were you I would get in your truck and drive South to Payson and go to Clay Glodman at Mogollon Taxidermy. He does great work and plus he is a sponser of this site.

Well it's simply stated like everything in life, you pay for what you get. I have researched and looked through alot of binos and when it comes down to it nothing beats swarovski. I had the same debate you had should I get the 15's or the 10's? I do most of my glassing from a tripod, but when I am hiking and jump something out or just want to glass right in front of me as I top over a ridgeline I want to be able to glass off hand. I went with the 10x50 swarovski slc binos. These are awesome, side by side comparison to the 15,s dang near just as good, but have a wider field of view. I love em, and you can glass perfect off hand with them. When it comes to state law, u can have a sidearm while you are in the field. The azgfd just passed a new law about 2 yrs ago to allow archers to carry a sidearm, but the barrel lenght has to be 6" or less for protection (keep in mind the barrel lenght only applys if you are carring archery equipment). U need to look into a concealed weapons permit if our gonna carry it in the vehicle or anywhere else unless it is visible, even in a holster it has to be visible. I always have a sidearm on me when I am in the field. Always on my side in a holster and not in my backpack, I like it right where I can get to it if I need it. As far as trail camers are concerned, I have one out right now and I am gonna go get it this week. It's in an area where a few migrants are. I hope it's still there. I think you will be fine, most migrants shouldn't mess with it and I have lots of buddies who have them set up down in the heart of migrant traffic. They haven't had any problems yet. Welcome to the site, I hope all my info helps with your decision.

this country has gone to hell!
monstercoues replied to azryan's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Good Grief People! So did anyone answer the question to: Was this person indeed an illegal alien or just one of millions of hispanic men in Chandler? I didn't have the time to read through all the posts. But I though I read that he didn't know, he was just assumming he was an illegal and that the guy was cited for not having insurance. Well, not having insurance is a thousand + dollar fine depending on what court it is tried in. I am sad to hear about your accident and the way the officer handled it. I am even sadder to hear how this one cop has left a bad taste in your mouth toward other officers. -
I would like to go too, could you send out an invitation my way? Haha. I don't want to post my address online though. Could u maybe post the invitation? Sounds like fun.
-
Wow, you are a lil bitter thats for sure. I am also at few things, but we will see what happens at the next commission meeting. The reason you are seeing more people around the area, whether in uniform or not is because they are looking for any other kinda sign in the wildlife around the area to see if anything else looks rabid. The other reason is when the news media is involved than they have non uniformed public relations people out of Phoenix come up and spread the word. The reason I know this is because my sister lives out there and she spoke to several of them. She has 3 kids and boy does she like to ask questions haha. Hope this helps.

AZGFD Hunt Recommendations
monstercoues replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Well I am not sure why you are ranting on my post. I totally agree with you and I said everything you are saying. My whole point was your first sentence. Thats why I am telling everyone to go to the commission meetings. Anyways I don't want to argue or fight with anyone so I am gonna just stop typing. -
AZGFD Hunt Recommendations
monstercoues replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Wow, I am glad to see things calm down a little bit. Jim, you da man! I have been biting my tongue and holding back from all the people bashing the AZFGD. I do want to get some info out that I have been holding in. First off, this is awesome that all of you are here posting your thoughts and opinions, but you NEED to attend these COMMISSION meetings. The COMMISSION has the overall say in all of these changes. Yes I know there are some of you that say u go and they don't care, but that wasn't true last year for the elk and lion changes that didn't go into affect. Not to mention there were only like 6-10 people who showed up in for the late Coues hunt change discussions last year. Gee I wonder why they got changed. I can't sit here and keep reading people say it's all about the money. First of all the license and tag increase bill took 2 yrs to pass, just like every other bill out there. This wasn't just something that happened overnight. Plus the poor people who work for GandF don't get paid jack crap. Trust me I know, my best friend is a game warden and he can barely afford to put food on the table. You guys need to understand that they are out there for the wildlife. With all the people who are bashing the department, if I was a game warden, I would be affraid to even work anymore. It seems everyone hates the department these days. In talking to my buddy, all hunt permit changes are based on hunt guidlines that the dept has used for years. Buck to doe ratios and fawn to doe ratios as well as overall hunt success. All population estimates are calculated over time and are also estimated for the following year that way they know or have a really good guess whether the poulation can handle the increase. All hunt recommendations are then sent to Leonard and Brian and then the commission for final approval. Hense--quit bashing the game wardens and go to the commission meetings. Sorry if I repeaded anything that anyone else had already posted about this. I didn't have time to read every post. -

Wow, 3 felony charges for picking up a dead head. Must not have been in AZ. Thats not even close to a felony offense. I believe all G&F violations are misdemeanors anyways aren't they? Not that that matters, apparently nobody but me obeys any laws anyways. Its not all about the law, its all about the fishcop you run into. Yeah it is about the law, and if you don't break it, than it doesn't matter who u run into. I like the fishcop comment. Its people like you that make good people not like the people who are out there trying to help hunters. I ran into a fish cop this weekend and he was talking about the road I was on that was going to be closed because of people dumping and people driving off road and hunters shooting everything in sight. He said he was working with the land owner to try to keep it open for hunters. Nice guy, I hope things work out for us hunters. I could see him going the other way, if I would have called him a fishcop or something. He prob would have put a lock on the gate himself right then and there. I have good experiences with the azgfd, maybe thats because I don't break the law. Haha. -
Nice Coues buck
monstercoues replied to azpackhorse's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Well you want to know what I would do? I would do what the law says to do and call the Game and Fish. U cannot legally possess the deer without evidence of legality. I had this exact same thing happen to me with a bighorn sheep head I found near Yuma. I called the G&F and they came and took the head until I could go take them to where I had found it the next day I had off of work. 2 Game Wardens walked 3 miles with me to where I found it and determined that it had died of natural causes. They let me keep the 170" ram. They were very nice about the whole thing and I would call them again. I am kinda tired of everyone bashing them all over this website. Maybe somebody called them and said they hit a deer and couldn't find it in that area and maybe they could help someone find this deer. U never know. Give it a shot and call them, It's the right thing to do. I know I was out in Redington Pass the last day of the Nov hunt with my brother and a guy asked us to keep an eye out cause he shot at a deer late in the evening and couldn't find it. Didn't know if he even hit it. If this is from there, maybe you found his deer. -
Wow Scotty boy, U sure openned a a can of worms over all of this stuff.

Well I hate to put a sour taste in your mouth, but thats what I get whenever I hear the name Hunters Lair Taxidermy. I shot my first AZ antelope in 2001 and I took it to Richard. I have never been more upset and disappointed in a mount than when I saw mine. First of all I wanted a wall pedastal and what I got was just a regular shoulder mount. Second of all there is stitching marks up the bottom of the neck. 3rd of all I have never seen a male antelope without black cheek patches and mine had them, but for some odd reason my mount doesn't have them.HMMM I looked at my video and the white markings on my antelope are different on the neck than my mount. That #$@$% used someone elses cape. I will never go there again and I should have just left the darn thing there, but I am too nice, I just took it and didn't say a word. Oh well he just lost alot of business.
-
Well I guess it depends on price and quality, u pay for what you get, just like anything else. Well I have been to alot of taxidermy shops all over AZ. I personally use Clay from Mogollon Taxidermy in Payson. But if you are in Tucson, Chris Harlow, Chuck Meachum, and Dean Lippert are some of the best around when it comes to coues deer. As far as price, Clay is cheaper than the rest, and does a heck of a job.

What Ammo To Use in my new .270 Rem Short Mag?
monstercoues posted a topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I just bought a new .270 Remington Model 700 Short Mag and I am wondering what load to use, preferably a 130 grain bullet. I reload, so if someone can offer me an accurate bullet and powder charge, that would be awesome. I am hearing these guns are shooting 3/4 " groups with factory loads, so I am pretty excited and can't wait to shoot it.
