What kinda plant is this? Can I eat it?
muledeerarea33? replied to bowhuntaz1's topic in The Campfire
Go plant some Mellon and pumpkin seeds at every local pond and creek bed. Come back in a year or so and harvest what grew. It'll surely raise eyebrows when people find them. I did it last year. -
Someone should anonymously post them here, I don't subscribe to all that other crap and like big deer too! Use your fake screen name to do it haha.

Thank you folks for all the kind words about the write up and about my health!! I walked almost 2 miles on Tuesday and it was rough! Only gagged once lol.better every day, soon I'll be able to return phone calls from fellow hunters and friends (some on here) since I can speak again YAY! Haha! Back to work as of Monday but holy crap it sucks. I'm winded just drinking water! Hope to kill a 219" coues in a few weeks, next to the road, while coughing, puking, and wheezing. But if I do..... Wow, game changer hahaha!!!!

It all started this morning. I've been really sick the past month and going stir crazy in the house. Feeling better yesterday and today I decided to head out for my hunt. I was out before sun up coffee in hand and the trusty rifle at my side. Grabbed my chair, set up on the back porch and started glassing. Like most other glassing sessions I saw lots of non game species, grass hoppers, birds, dogs, the cat, etc. glassed for a few hours before I decided to hike a bit. I've had pneumonia for the last two weeks so I took it easy but still put some distance on the house shoes! I walked a 200 yard circle around the house (spot and stock style) the wind was unreal! Gusting in every direction 5-20mph. I walked up on my prey two different times but both times I was eluded by his sly actions. Decided to make the hike back to camp (I mean the house) and cook some eggs. After a power house healthy meal of eggs, bacon, green chili, onion, mushroom, cheese, and pace, I was ready to go again! But the Z-PAC makes me poop so had to take care of business before I could take care of business if you know what I mean. A quick shower, change of clothes, and LOTS of TP later I was back on the hunt. Decided to sit water mid day so I sat next to the trough I have setup for quail and such. Wind still roaring I saw nothing. Around 2pm the antibiotic called again. Afterwards I decided to eat left over breakfast for lunch, mix a drink and head back out. If your not hunting all day then your not hunting at all! Sat on the porch again and glassed until my eyes were bleeding!! Finally around 4pm saw a set of floppy ears sticking out of a tree near the dry pond. I watched for an hour but it stayed bedded (dang wind!) finally when legal shooting light was almost out he stood up. I doped my scope for the distance and checked my wind and ranged him. With the hand truck as a rest I took 3 breaths and fired on exhale. The 702 plinkster (59.97 on roll back at the Walmart several years ago) with its Winchester wildcat lead bullet purchased at yellow front years ago hit its mark! I heard the wallop of lead hitting flesh and he dropped in his tracks. A quick high five to myself and the work began. I walked the 45 yards to the kill site and boned him out, packed him up and made the long trek back. Got back after dark just before the ice melted in my drink. Before anyone complains about such a long distance with this caliber I want to say I practice at these ranges and beyond several times a year and my fixed 4 power Bushnell is money! I haven't bought my rim fire reloading set up yet so hand loads aren't an option. Also the plinkster is aluminum bedded (don't ask how, but I did it) I taped him at just over 12" of ears gross without deductions. I only had one road hunter drive by although I think it was a rancher checking his cows. I was far enough off the road that it didn't bother my hunt luckily. I did lose my pack on this hunt but found it on the tailgate of the truck. No pics as of yet. They have been submitted to jackrabbit monthly in hopes of a good return. Big thanks to my wife for allowing us to move to the middle of nowhere and making this hunt possible. I thought about hiring a guide but it wasn't in the budget and i had no clue what % to tip!? The real hunter of my house is my terroir mix, she herds jacks into a 10' stick of 6" ABS on a regular basis and we have to free them from the torture. Unfortunately the dog was inside sleeping and did not care to help. Anyways, thanks for reading my adventure, pics will be posted as soon as its ok.

Kinda agree with 5guys. Made it seem like rifle hunters were "less" of a hunter in the beginning. Although it was an archery promotion video it seemed? I enjoyed it.

I've used a 22 rifle, 22 mag pistol, 223wssm, 243, 270, 30-06, and a rem 1100 with #4. Oh and my truck twice. But my favorite is with a .357 herret TC pistol, 14" barrel that I inherited. Loading cast bullets. Gun is on the money at 400 yards! It's one of those guns that you can't understand why it's so accurate but you never question it.

Cold rainy weather today has put my hunt for trophy rabbits on hold. Got a good mesquite fire going and I'm about ready to cook a whole chicken (split in half) also have the Dutch oven heating up for a pineapple upside down cake. I enjoy cooking and especially enjoy "campfire" cooking. Simple recipe but you must start with a well seasoned Dutch oven!!! The one I use has only had baked goods in it since its birth and my great grandad bought it for my great grandma in the 19 teens some time. So it is well seasoned to say the least. You can go homemade as I have those recipes but I prefer boxed since its easy. 1 box yellow cake mix, half stick of butter, brown sugar, 3 eggs, water, maraschino cherries, pineapple rings in juice and oil. Mix the cake mix as the box describes but use pineapple juice as a substitute for 2/3 of the water. Let the batter sit. In a warm Dutch oven melt the butter and add the brown sugar. Put your pineapple rings in. As many that will fit in your oven? And a cherry in the center of each I like to dice some pineapple and cinnamon in my cake batter as well. Pour your batter slowly on top of it all. Now the tricky part. I don't use charcoal because I'm cheap and wood around here is free. Don't know the the amount of charcoal you'd use but with oak or mesquite coals I'll put some sand down, a 1 1/2" bed of coals on the sand then my oven. Cover the lid with 1/2" of coals and let cook. Warm days about 35-45 min. Colder days (under 60) around 45-55 min. Let cool a bit when done and turn it over on a cookie sheet or foil when done.

I'll check my stash, I know I've got some but have to see how many times they've been fired. I'm southeast of Tucson though.

I have the cheaper chrony and it did well until a .38 blew the top off. Whatever you get don't loan it out or let someone else shoot thru it.

We used to draw the 27-28 December hunt every year, don't remember if it was any antler or not? We'd hang em whole in camp, field dressed. The hide would keep it from freezing. Then hang quarters in the shed at home for a week or so. But I haven't had a December tag in a while.

never did see a 14 during the hunt but had trail cam pics and video of a few. Past up a 13" because the camcorder wasn't ready yet. Either way, settled on the 12" dink. He still makes the Wallace and ladmo books so I'm happy.

I assumed this would come up. My drink of choice lately, has been E-mergency and sprite on the rocks. Hot taughties in the evening. Thanks.
