    December 2012 AZ Coues Hunt.

Great write up man. John's buck is awesome! Congrats again to the both of you. I know how much planning and investment in time you all put into scouting for this hunt. Nice to see it paid off for one of you. Heck of a long stalk. Glad everything panned out and he was able to drop the hammer on that buck! Wish I could have been there to help you when you were hunting solo. I know how hard that can be, especially when making those long shots. Your buck still will taste good on the grill! You are right though...Mexico awaits!!

    scope for a1000 yard gun

I very recently shot a bunch of rounds through two new rifles topped off with different scopes. One rifle has my Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50 and the other has a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44. I was testing and dialing in turrets on these rifles from 200-700 yards. (both rifles chambered for same cartridge) The temps were in the 60-65 degree range and I spent quite a bit of time adjusting for parallax and fighting the mirage at different distances with both scopes. Clarity, the Zeiss wins by a pretty good margin. Brightness, again goes to the Zeiss, keep in mind the objective is bigger on this scope also. Eye relief is better on the Zeiss, but it's finickier when at full power trying to get things "centered". I liked the plex reticle on the Vortex better, it was finer and may be a personal preference, but made fine aiming adjustments easier. The parallax adjustment is much better on the Vortex. It worked better at more distances and just plain worked. The "feel" of the turrets while clicking (dialing) was crisper feeling on the Vortex. Also, the Vortex, with its bigger diameter tube, has more internal adjustment in elevation. I just thought I would share my findings from hours and hours behind both scopes, side by side. The Vortex Viper was a great buy and if the newer PST is even better, then that's pretty good glass. For me, the important things to consider (other than the obvious such as clarity, brightness, etc) in a scope for my long range HUNTING rifle are WEIGHT, and the ability to HOLD ZERO after making numerous adjustments in elevation and windage back and forth. I've been taking a hard look at the swaro Z5 with the BT, but I don't know how precise it holds zero.

    Happy Birthday Justo

Desde Carolina del Sur, Feliz Cumpleaños!
  11. My good friend Jesse Novak and his hunters have been having a good season in New Mexico. He is one of the rare people that hikes in sheep country just to “see what’s up!” I’m talking straight up and down country. Looking for rockys and deserts is his passion. I wanted to share a few photos for the guys that enjoy sheep on the forum. This first ram completes this hunters ¾ slam and was taken this October. Congratulations again to Jesse and his hunter Dale Ableidinger. This second ram sure is beautiful. Taken by Dain Ellsworth this November. This final ram was just taken two days ago this December. Completes ½ of Kyle McGovern’s sheep slam. Congratulations!

    Son's Coues hunt

Good advice, I remember my son reciting the whole movie " Joe Dirt "on the side of a mountain while I glassed. They grow up fast, and you never get those moments back. Congrats on a fine buck. I second this, BIG TIME. Viper hit the nail on the head.

    Son's Coues hunt

This sure sounds like a fantastic experience. I immediately thought back to being a young boy experiencing the outdoors and thinking about "survival" stuff too. Your story sure took me back. Congratulations to your son for being a tough gun while keeping a positive attitude and for making that shot. Big time congrats to you for being such an awesome Dad and doing this for your son. I know you must be very proud.
