    Unit 27

Awesome scott! Realy helps tell I can get back out.
  3. I have found lots of indian stuff, the coolest being beads made out of white stone. they were verry small, 1/4"- and carved with desing. Verry detailed, verry cool. That was in the Kaibab. In Sycamore Canyon while my wife was hunting Coues, we found two picks, two shovels and a bent up digging bar. The handels on one of the picks and one of the shovels were desolved into the ground! The other two handles wern't much diferent. Figured they were from an old miner. Near Flagstaff I found a verry old Santafe Railroad lantern burried under pine neadles. Verry cool! A friend of mine found an old "hammer, caplock plate" off of an old muzzelloader on Anderson Mesa in 5BN. It was blown apart in a way that there was likely some old Mountian Man parts lying arround. Another friend found a REALY old bayonet in the mtn's above Alamagordo NM. He kicked it out of the ground while having lunch on a steep hillside. You could barely make out what looked like a British crown type symble on it. You know, the big poofy hat type crown. I think someone told him it wasn't from the Red Coats but from around the Spanish American war age. ? Cool stuff, Cool thread!

    bowhunters you better read this

Says the survey don't count yet. Who implimented this survey? Is the G&F behind it? Or will I just recive SPAM if I fill it out? If it is lagit then everyone should answer NO to #1. And just leave things as they are! We have the best elk hunting in the world, Don't change it! The 10% cap is back on and that is what started it. NOW STOP IT!

    Coues deer

From the top of a Coues deers back down to a vital zone is only about 3". From the top of a mature bucks back to the bottom of his briskit is about 14" So I would say from the top of his back to the center of the heart on a brodside shot is about 10 or 11". But I wouldn't aim for the heart. it is too close to the bottom. I would aim for the center of the lungs for a bigger target. I hope these mesurments help.

    Archery Program

Good for you! You are the man! Check the local-est archery clubs for help. We need to make archery a class they can take in shcool also. I have ben thinking about doing something like this in Flagstaff. How did you get the G&F involved and how involved are they?
  11. Don't get me wrong or jump my case he is an awsom buck!, but you asked. So I'd say from the 2 pictures, if you are holding out for a 110" buck then don't shoot! wait untill next year. He doesn't have much mass or spred. He has lots of points but they are all small and his longest ones aren't over 6" He does have good looking main beams! But with his narrow spred they look longer than they are. Still he is an awsome buck! And I wish thoes pictures were mine. I think by these pictures he will gross 105 at best. Which is still pritty dang big. What do you think he looks like in the broadside picture compared to this bucks broadside rack?

    Everyone thinks I'm crazy

I have seen Coati on Mt Elden north of Flagstaff. I herd that way back when they had the big fire on elden they found lots of dead ones. I have also seen Javelina in units 7 and 9. Kind of north and cold for them too. So I belive in your monkey story.

    coues deer, unit 32, late

Jon, your looking in the right place! There are some realy nice guys on here. Too bad you only got 3 days to hunt. I think you will get some good info that you can use. Is it the first three days of the hunt, or three others? I know a great coues deer guide that might be availible for some of that but I would have to know what three daye to ask him about. Check with ya latter! Lance C.
  15. We experimented this year with a 243 WSSM (win. supper short mag.) This is an awsome round with plenty of punch and speed out to 300+ yards. We were shooting a 95 grain bullet. I let my 9 year old try it and it wasn't too big for him. He is 67 lbs. Although, it was too much for my neice age 10 about the same size. But I say get them a gun that is as big as they can handle and it will last them many more years. Unless you just want to buy lots of guns, which is cool to! We also tryed a 260 with a 130 or 120 grain bullet. It had low recoil and killed elk just fine at longer ranges. These guns might be at the tops for recoil for your boy but they preform great and next year they won't bother him at all.
  16. We need to get everyone that we can to go to the G&F meetings this month on the price raises and put in a word for the children!!! There must be more oppertunities and more afordable ones for children. Spicificly thoes kids from age 10 - 14 years. These are verry cridical years for kids and they cant even get drawn. Or we cant afford to put them all in for hunts! Step up for our future, the children! "Kids who hunt, trap and fish don't mug little old laidies"!

  18. My wife, 4 young kids and I all love to hunt. Do they understand how much it will cost for a family to put in for their own state, so they can hunt their own back yard. They need more programs for children that don't cost much. It is an envestment in our future! Everyone should go to the G&F price raise meetings this month and put in a vote for the children! And realy for those kids that are ages 10 - 14. That is such a critical age for young hunters. We have to be able to afford to let them hunt and there has to be better chances for them to hunt. Have you seen the draw odds for youth hunts? They suck! They have a better chance at getting a general hunt. Maybe they should cut the age for the youth hunts down to age 14? Somthing! To put 6 family members in for just resident elk right now costs around $700.00 And if we wan't to put in for deer and antelope it just goes up from there! "Kids who hunt , trap and fish, don't mug little old laidies"!

    feild dressing the deer

Sometimes it's called the poacher dress method because it's so fast and easy. Keep meat cool, clean and dry! Do not put it in plastic unless it has cooled all of the way through first! That can take all day and night so I use a breatheable game bag. I like to rub clean blood over the freshly exposed meat. The blood will make a protective scab when it drys and it will keep the dirt from penetrating the meat and keep the flies from laying eggs. Flies and dirt love wet meat! And wet meat collects bacteria! If you wash it then make sure that you dry it completely right away. A quick way to ruin meat is to try to remove a scent gland. It will come off with the hide. If you want to get to the entrails, you can easily remove the ribs with any knife, simply cut the soft cartilage that connects the rib to the brisket and lift the rib, the cartilage that connects the rib to the other side will break right off. You can even take off the whole rib cage this way if you like to keep the meat on the bone. Don't leave any hide on. It holds in heat and gets hair everywhere. Just remember COOL, CLEAN and DRY!
  20. I believe in putting wives and kids in separate because if I am hunting at the same time and they miss or just can't see it or do it I will be filling my tag with their opportunity. If it is just them with the tag then I have to be patient and wait for their opportunity to finally come around. It increases their chance of success that much more if that buck is still running around somewhere. Unfortunately (not really) my wife and I both drew 36A November tags. We drew them separately, so you can't say that I didn't try. I wish her luck.
  21. When a hunt gets down to the last 3 tags then anyone with 4 people on an app cannot be drawn. It is possible that there was one tag left when your number came through and the other guy had applied by himself and was recycled for the second draw. This is one possibility. The other possibilities require too many large words and long sentences!
  22. Yes it can happen. First I must ask. Did you put in with any one on your app.

    Lighter vs Heavier Bullets?????

Great info guys! I also shoot the 7mm RUM. I use the 140 grain and a 26" barrel and I love it for everything. But I would like to mention that it wouldn't be the gun that it is if I didn't take advantage of it with a Burris 3x9 full field 2 with balistaplex (not sure on spelling) This scope is awesome! Without it, it would be like putting one 10 yard pin on a Mathews bow and calling it good. Of course you gotta have a range finder to take full advantage of it. I have used other scopes and they don't compare in a hunting situation. Like I said I use this load for everything so I always know where it hits. I used to change grains around with my old 30-06 until I asked myself what would have killed that critter better? A new 180 gr load in the dirt or my old 150 gr in the lungs? After I answered this my "old 06" became my "trusty old 06" until it was stolen. Now I have my "new trusty ultra mag"! Keep the wind in your face!

    Any one use hunt scout?

Check out the "Scout 4 U " page on www.tlohunting.com It's the same sort of thing and yes it does work. But it also depends on the kind of hunter that you are. Can you take the info and run with it? Some hunters can be led by the hand to a different group of bucks every day of the season and still never tag out. And then blame the person trying to help them for it. The info that you get is hard earned and true but they still cant pull the trigger for you. So it depends on your expectations and your skils. Most outfitters want a good name and there cliants are there best addvertising. Most outfitters don't guide because it makes them rich. They love to be out there just like everyone else so you can bet they will try hard for you. I know that TLO's "Scout 4 U" is this way and "Hunt Scout" is likley to be this way as well. Good luck.
