This is more of a 360" bull.
-
I have some time on my hands so I will show you how I break it down. While we are all waiting for the season to start! First off this bull is very even and has smooth flow to his antlers. This makes him seem smaller than he is. I think if you saw a 350" bull standing next to him it would be easer to gudge. Take a small peice of paper and pincel and measure the points compared to the body in the pictures using the paper for a measure tape. This will not give you the curveture of the point unless you turn the paper sideways and bend it with the tine. A "post-it" paper works well. Looking at the video he is very symmetrical so I think it is safe to say that once we mesure one side we can just double it. So lets start with the fronts. I went and measured some smaler mounts in the 310- 320 range and from the base of the antler to the tip of the nose was 15" So I think it is safe to say the biger bull in the picture has at least a 15" face. The 4th picture shows his fronts brodside and I measure his first about 5" longer than his face and his seconds seem to be at least that long as well if not longer. That would meen 20 " fronts but lets just call them all 18" to be safe. Next are his thirds. In the 2nd picture you can compare them to his first and second on the same side, and they seem about 4" shorter. And since we are being on the safe side we will call them 14". Next are his forths! I measured the depth of the chest on the mounts of the smaller bulls and they were both about 31" deep. I think this bull is a little deaper than that, but I think it is safe to say he is at least 31" deep in the chest. The 1st and the 5th picture show his sords the best and comparing them to his chest in the same pictures his sords are about 6" shorter than the depth of his chest. This would meen at least 25" sords. His fifths look to be about 6" shorter than his sords so that would be 19" fifths. I am comparing his main beams to a bull I know has 53" main beams. I think his beams are at least that long cause they stick a foot over his back when his nose is two the ground feeding but lets just call them 50" to be safe. Although his forth and fifths tip in, his spread is normal so you could give him a 40" spread. But as the first picture shows his main beams flare out at the ends. This usually gives a bull at least another five inches. So 45" for the spread. And then his mass. He looks to have great mass. Not including velvet! A bull like this can easily have 60" of mass but to be safe lets call it 55" Add up all of our safe measurements and it = 388" but don't forget that he has about a 4" in line 7th point on his right antler that makes a total of 392" gross. And then most people like to take off 10" just to be safe which would be 382" And then you have to say "will he grow another five inches in the next two weeks?" I have seen bulls grow a whole 4" 7th point and a couple of inches on each main beam in the last two weeks before sheding velvet. So I think it is safe to say he might grow another 5" before he is done. That brings us back to 387". Bwaaahahahaha! OK, ok, I'll stop. Hope you had fun! Lance

Baahahaha! This is my job! I think he will score over 370 easy enough. A few others and myself keep adding up the points and at a very low guess. The lowest we can get is 375" conserving on every point and mesurment. He may have another five inches in him before he sheds velvet. How deep would you guys say a mature bulls chest is? Lance

Great buck!!!! Note! He seems to be jumping at the sound of your camera!
-
Awesome!! Good for you!! PS. Did you check my trail camera while you were up there?
-
He would have died where he lay for sure! Cool pictures! Glad he didn't stomp you! Lance

Ultimate Steel by Rocket Arrowheads 75gr, good for Coues or elk! Half the price as others! !! Patterns the same as field tips. even at 100+ yards and 300+fps. I put them on with a brodhead wrench and the blades will not come out. They are tooo sharp to touch anyway! -
Hunt it in the same places and just like you always do if you had success that way. The December hunts are not all they are cracked up to be. The deer in 30 won't usually hit good rut untill mid January anyway. Even if they were rutting just sitting and glassing with a tripod from good vantage points in the same areas you usually hunt is still the best way. If you want a 100" buck then go scout your brains out and find one before season. Right now during the summer while they are in the velvet is a good time to find one. In that unit he will be in the same general area during Oct, Nov and Dec. He might be feeding on different things on different slopes but he will be there somewhere. Lance

Ahh yes. "My Mountain" is soo awesome isn't it! Glad you could enjoy it! That is one heck of a hike you took! Lance -
It is spots with no hair at all. there dark skin is showing. Mostly in places like the arm pit where the shoulder rubs alot. Or where they have an itch, a scar or where they just get poked by something. Right now there summer hair is at it's thinest. You can even see the change from May to July in the pictures. There faces loose alot of the hair as well, and deer do it also.

In the last two pictures the main beam on his right side is much longer than the left but that does not show in the first picture. Are you sure that is the same buck? There might be two. Lance

An one more from last year. This is the 8pt from last year. Note he is only a 6X7. He spent his time in green grass country the whole summer this year and it shows. Compare this photo with your photo of him above (second pic.) in the same running posision. Nice camera by the way! Way better than my photoes! Lance
-
And also for year to year growth comparison. This is what that 6X7 looked like last year on July 7th 2006. He spent way too much time down in the low country this year and his antler growth suffered from it. I wish he would have come up early like he did last year. Just thought you might like to see Lance
-
And this is what he looked like 22 days later in June of this year. And now he looks like your picture
-
For some fun comparison, Here is what that 8 pt looked like on May 22 of this year.

The new hunt reg reccomendations are out and the archery deer dates overlap with the arch elk dates I'm not to sure what to think about that It could be good if you want to combo hunt, but bad with all the other hunters in the woods that don't have elk tags. Hmmmm? Lance
-
Very Nice thanks for posting them! About half the elk country in AZ had good grass and the other half stunk!

Camera thieves SUCK!
Lance replied to azsagebrush's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
That sucks sooo bad! It sounds like they bought the cutters just for your camera being that they opened it when they were at your camera. Likely they saw your camera and then went to the nearest store that sold bolt cutters and then went straight back out to your camera to do the deed. I would check the nearest stores for sales of bolt cutters around that time! You have the brand name of the cutters. Is there a price sticker that tells the name of the store or anything like that on the package. Did they leave boot or tire tracks. I'v found many a person and thieves by the tire and boot track. I'm sure they will be out in that area again and likely have a tag for something. I used to work at a tire store back in the day and had many tire patterns memorized. Police used to come to the store to get the owner and sometimes us to tag along to go identify tire tracks. It was a small town and the tacktic would pritty much catch anyone and everyone that was local or somewhat local. Since your theives will likely be in the area for scouting you might be able to identify there truck. You could talk to them on the road and let them know that there is a large camera thieve investigation going on in the area by local authorities and they are looking for a truck just like theirs. It might scare them some. Is there finger prints on the package they left behind? Theives are not smart. Might want to tell the stores to keep an eye out for bolt cutter buyers in the future! Dadgumit, theives make me mad! You just want me to find them for you? I once tracked two punks accross the navajo rez with a 30-06 slung over my shoulder and a 3 1/2" mag Mosberg in hand! The police told me they couldn't fallow them onto the rez and I told them "BS that they had stole a truck full of guns and I had a truck full of guns and was going after them!" (one of the guns they had was mine and I was not about to let them shoot at me with my own gun!) That got things all in an uproar and everyones panties in a wad Long storry short the trail ended when the theives ran a red light in Scotsdale and bashed a family of four on Thanksgiving day sending the whole family to the critical care The now drunk theves then got out of my Brother in laws trashed truck and ran off! The one that was running through the streets of Scotsdale with my rifle in hand was hard to miss and was cought. He got many years in prison but I still haven't got my gun back! They know who the other one that got away is because I tracked them to his house on the rez. He was no longer there at the time I arrived and his mother wouldn't come out or even acknowledge she was there do to my heavy fire power at the front door was likely scaring her She put two and two together and called the cops on her son in hopes I would not return. Anyway, sorry to take up so much of your post. Sorry about your camera. It reminds me I had better go pick up a couple of mine. Lance
