Dilemma, how would you deal with this??
Lance replied to fatfootdoc's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
How about.... Young kids and first timer kids should apply by their self and for easy to draw tags so they have the best chance to draw! Or.... Oh man, I already applied Or, Just tell him that you don't want to do that. Don't overload it. It's hard enough to fill one kid tag by itself, not to mention 3 or 4 during a hunt! Lance -
The Bionic Buck......'07 Late Hunt
Lance replied to COOSEFAN's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I think it was an excelent post COOSEFAN! It brings up topics that usualy get overlooked. My Wife and I were watching the Outdoor Channel and she pointed out that most of the animals that were being taken on the shows we were watching at that time were dropping at the shot! And we talked about how they don't show the follow up shot on TV, and how that can give the wrong impressions to hunters that "after one shot, all is well!" That there is never anything else you should have to do. Another rule I live by (as well as many others on this site) is "As long as it is standing you keep shooting!!!!" I always tell people that you should do as much as you can to make the first shot count and then if it is still standing (or dropped at the shot) then shoot what ever you can see!!! In other words make it as quick as posible! I say, if you have been carying around all those arrows or bulets for the whole hunt you might as well get your money worth and use em up! Lance -
DAMN YOU, Mr. Hun!!!

The Bionic Buck......'07 Late Hunt
Lance replied to COOSEFAN's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
OK EVERYONE LISTEN UP!!! THIS IS HUNTING GOSPEL by Lance.... OK quit laughing I'm serious ! First of all, I'm sorry about your buck getting away, and that is a fine buck you got! Great picture! The cape is so clean and pritty! Now Second.... I live by this and I tell everyone I hunt with to do this! And that is.... IF AN ANIMAL DROPS IN IT'S TRACKS WHEN YOU SHOOT IT, THEN YOU BETTER BE SCARED!!! YOU NEED TO SHOOT IT AGAIN RIGHT WHERE IT LAYS!!!!! AS SOON AS YOU CAN!!!!!!! Because one of two things has happend. You have eather "hit the spine" or "shocked the spine." ("Shocking the Spine" occurs when a bullet passes near the spine and the shock of the bullet stuns the spine causing temporary paralysis. The same thing happens when a bullet or arrow hits the bones on top of the spine that divide the two back straps.) If you have "Shocked" the spine then the animal will get up and run away with a hole in him. Just like on the video clip. If you have hit the spine then the animal will flounder around on the ground and need to be shot again anyway, or it will have a verry long suffering death. Eather way they will need to be shot again anyway SO DON"T TAKE THE CHANCE! DO BOTH OF YOU A FAVOR, MAKE IT A HABBIT TO JUST SHOOT THEM AGAIN RIGHT AWAY, RIGHT WHERE THEY LAY!!!! Some times you cant see them when they fall. Thats when you realy need to be scared! The "spine shock " happens all the time and I'm sure most of you know this already. And I'm sure everyone has or has heard stories about it if they think about it. I hope my rambling helps someone in the future! PS. I saw two puffs of "smoke" from the bullet. The second was the bullet hitting whatever it was on the ground likely the rock. And the first was the poof of hair off of the buck from the impact/pass through of the bullet. A grazing arrow will make a big poof of hair as well. Lance -
BowNut - 4A and 4B are good for elk BUT the portions that are open to this hunt are not what you are thinking! You need to read the boundry description of the LCR Hunt Area. You could stand in the middle and see both sides if you could see around all the hunters! You better read up before you think you are going hunting on the Rim. 4A 4B LCR Hunt Area

There are other posts on this site about this subject. Only Small No Elk Portions of those units. I'v heard over a thousand tags have been sold already! Do the math on that chunk of change! $$$$$ I wonder who will get that in their Christmas stocking?

I thought they reversed that rule back to no handguns.... Better double check I guess.

Yoohooo? Douuug? Don't you know you are suposed to post as soon as you get back and not after you shower! "Mid day bird hunting" while you have a Dec Coues tag in your pocket? Dude, that dog better lick your toes clean every night for that one! Lance

A fine pair of bucks! Way to go guys! Sorry about your antler, How many pecies is it in? Do you have any pictures of it? It sure makes an interesting end to the story. Do not mock a fine buck like that! He is what he is, and that is a great buck! Celebrate him he gave his life to you! Lance

I like open glassable country. Too much brush and hidey holes are tough. You were hunting high and still saw several deer. Everyone else was hunting low and might be chasing deer up to where you were hunting. Give it another shot up high. Being a good glasser and being a good Coues glasser are two different things all together! If you are new to Coues, chances are that there are more deer there than what you saw. My best advice would be to take some more glassers with you! Teamwork it! Lance

awsome! Way to go to all of you!

There is soooo much country out there! Everyone knows the archery hunt will be going on during the rifle hunt long before they put in for the Dec rifle hunt. (for years and years now)

Nice buck

Darn right scents work! And I don't think it matters much what deer it is from. People use there wives hygiene products. I'v seen more than once, a Coues whitetail buck trying to breed mule deer does. There are pictures here on this site of cross breads between mule and Coues deer. I think it is more on how you use it that brings success. Western deer are not as consentrated as eastern deer so it is hit or miss in even the best spots. Lance

Not to say she isn't big. She looks very mature with the long face. But when I saw the picture and it looks like the kid is sitting way back behind the cow and holding his hands in the air like they are sitting on the cows back I'm pritty sure it was just ment to be a good joke picture Good picture! Congrats on his cow! It's great to see the kids filling their tags!

Nov Dove Hunting?
Lance replied to Atypical's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
We would just drive out to the farms in the county and find one that will let you hunt it. We always hunt the corners of the fields, or watter holes nearby in the desert. There is plenty of farmland on your way to Tucson. But Towns grow so fast that you have to find a new spot every year! Drive further and stay in the desert. The dove hunting gets slower the higher you get in the state it seems.
